TIMO (TIM) EDVIN KANGAS

It is with deep sadness the family announces the peaceful passing of Timo on October 31, 2022 at Meadowood Manor.

Timo was born September 21, 1948 in the tiny hamlet of Väräjarvi, Finland.  He Is survived by wife Shirley; son Curtis; granddaughter Rylie; sister-in-law Lynne Norquay; sisters, Salli Lintula, Seija (Pertti) Perkaus, and Lilja (Ami) Juntunen; brothers, Eino, and Toivo (Seija); and many nieces and nephews, all of Finland. He was predeceased by father Edvin, mother Saima, sister Irma and in-laws, Harold and Elsie Norquay

Growing up in Finland, he loved math, skiing and his mother’s baking. Opportunities were limited growing up after WWII, but he never let that stop him. After completion of school, Timo ran his grandparents store and then completed his military service. Upon leaving the army he attended college in Tornio obtaining his designation in accounting. He then decided to come to Canada “to learn English”.

Arriving with his ambition, he touched down in Canada on July 1st, 1971. He picked Winnipeg to begin his adventure and after living for a short time in Regina, he made Winnipeg his permanent home. It was during this time he met the love of his life, Shirley. Together they raised their son Curtis. While working and raising a family, Timo completed his CGA designation and built a career in the accounting department of Westfair Foods, retiring April 23, 2004.

In retirement he liked to keep busy around the house and yard.  In between chatting with neighbours, you could always find him building or fixing something. Timo loved travelling. He and Shirley went to places throughout the USA, Mexico, Europe, the United Kingdom, many trips to Finland, and of course Canada. He also gave in and learned to dance, much to Shirley’s delight, making new friends attending dances.

On May 11, 2011, Timo became a “Grampa”. A role he cherished and took advantage of. Timo and Rylie were sidekicks in all things mischievous and were the official taste testers for Gramma.

Through life Timo treated the ups and downs of life with calmness and humility. When his memory and health started to fail, he hung on to his greatest love. The love of family, here and in Finland.

At his request, a private celebration of his life will take place.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to all the workers at Meadowood Manor for the excellent care given to Timo.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Manitoba in his honour.

Dear Shirley, I am so sorry for your loss. Tim was such a sweetie. He was a bit of a tease and always had a twinkle in his eye.  He was also a prime packing box finder when I had to move out of my house.

Worked with Timo at WFF and reconnected years later at Holiday gatherings, so sorry to hear of his passing.  In the workplace or outside of work he was always smiling and always had a witty remark or funny joke to share, will always remember the fun conversations about the various office sports pools, and time spent “enjoying” Chicken Delight feasts at month ends!  I know he’ll be missed by so many,  condolences to the family.  RIP Timo

Timo (aka the Cookie Monster) was a kind and generous man,  He loved to get those cookies I would bring to him.  Shirley would give him heck, but he would just give her a sly smile and have a couple anyway.   I know that Shirley, Curtis and Rylie will have many memories of their times with Timo.  God speed.  Love Valerie and  Paul
