LESLIE KEENAN

Leslie Keenan left this world on July 2, 2018 after a brief illness. She went with the same sense of adventure and energy she lived with for 79 years. She golfed 18 holes and did her regular volunteering stint with the Children’s Hospital Book Market just days before.

Born in Winnipeg, she attended Cecil Rhodes and Tec-Voc schools. She went to work with Winnipeg Transit after high school, left for a while to raise her family, and then continued her career at Transit’s treasury and lost property departments. Her lifetime retiree’s bus pass was well used as she made her way everywhere on the big orange rocket.

She married Al Keenan in 1961, and they moved into the family home in 1968. From the time her kids were in school she was an active volunteer at the schools, at Immanuel United Church, and with her bowling and golf leagues. Every summer was spent with her parents, her husband, and her children at big turquoise trailer on Lot 28 at West Hawk Lake. It was a time of happiness, rummoli, and lots of time suntanning at Crescent Beach.

Leslie was always famous for her fashion sense, which was always fabulous, often sparkly, and always accompanied by the bling she loved so much. She lived by the motto that you were born with 10 fingers, so each one of them needed a ring.

Leslie also shared her love of perfume with her part-time job that lasted well into her 70’s. She was a fixture at the perfume counters at Eaton’s, the Bay, and Holt Renfrew as a long-time fragrance demonstrator.

She always loved travel, whether family trips to the Caribbean, her Three Sisters adventures, or her gambling and shopping trips south of the border with her friends and confidants. Many of her travel companions were the same friends who hit the bowling lanes, curling rinks, and golf courses together over the years. She is one of the few people to have broken an ankle golfing, though it had little to do with sport and more to do with wine and golf carts.

Her spirit and kindness touched everyone who she met — whether it was a dear friend, a colleague, or a stranger on the bus. The world shines a little less brightly with her gone.  

Leslie is survived by her husband Al, her children Jason (Kaori) and Leslie Anne Hurley (Darren), granddaughter Rowan Hurley, sisters Sandra Lambert and Leanne Struve (Doug), and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her mother and father, Les and Lena Wardale, and a long line of beloved cats.

Her family also wants to thank the incredible staff on the NE3 Wing of Concordia Hospital for their compassion and care through Leslie’s brief illness, especially Osman, Cheryl, and Laura.

Cremation has taken place and the family will host a celebration of the lives of both Leslie and Al at 1 p.m. on August 24, 2018 at Immanuel United Church, 755 Golspie Street at Kimberley Avenue.
