KYLE KEMATCH

April 8, 1983 - September 2, 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Kyle Shane Norman Kematch age 38 of Winnipeg, Manitoba on September 2nd, 2021. Kyle was born on April 8th, 1983 and spent most of his life in Winnipeg. He also enjoyed spending time in Sapotaweyak Cree Nation.

He was predeceased by his mother Linda Girouard, and sister Crystal Kematch, both in the summer of 1999.  Sadly, Kyle leaves behind his children Kyrra, Sylas, Shane, and Azaleah, as well as his father Faron Sr., brother Faron (Krystal), sisters Ashley (Daniel), Amber (missing since November 2010), Sharon (Willy), and Angelique, as well as many aunties, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Kyle was a caring individual who valued the importance of family. After the disappearance of his sister Amber in 2010, then the murder of 14-year-old Tina Fontaine in 2014, Kyle felt he needed to be proactive and do what he could to find his sister and other missing persons. Fearing his sister was somewhere in the waters of the Red River, Kyle, along with others, developed a plan to search for her by trolling the Red River in a boat equipped with large hooks attached to a harness. The harness would be dropped to the bottom and would run along the bed of the river. After a few times of doing this, word got out and people began volunteering to either help Kyle on the boat, or search along the riverbanks.

As well, families of missing persons would ask if Kyle could search for their loved ones too. Kyle would never say no and as a result - “Drag the Red” was born.

After a while, Kyle became a strong advocate for MMIWG2S. He was so dedicated to the search for his sister and other missing people, that he would eventually quit his job so he could search full time. It was a daunting task, but Kyle did it humbly and selflessly as he believed his efforts might supply answers and bring peace to a family in pain. After many years of searching however, the strain became too much for Kyle and he needed a break.

Although he didn’t realize it, Kyle touched the lives of many. It was through these same efforts that he gave hope to families and brought communities closer together.

8 years after it’s inception, Drag the Red continues and Kyle’s tireless work, dedication, and commitment to finding his sister, along with others, will be his everlasting legacy.

The family is very thankful to all who have reached out and sent their condolences.
