JAIRAJ (JAY) KHEDKAR

July 9, 1960 – October 20, 2022

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Jay. He was predeceased by his parents Shashikumar Khedkar and Sarala (Dalvi). He is survived by his siblings Vinda, Tutu (Tracy) and Uday (JoAnne), as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces.

Jay was in foster care during his teenage years with his best friend Bob’s family. He is also predeceased by his foster parents, Percy & Charlotte (Lottie) Reuther, as well as brothers Robert and Patrick. We would like to thank their family for all of their love and care.

Jay was born in Wichita, Kansas, then also lived in India as well as Montreal, before settling in Winnipeg at the age of 12. He was a very intelligent person and loved mathematics, philosophy, & chess, starting to play the game with his father at a young age and continuing throughout his life. At a young age it was also evident that he had a mischievous, practical joker element to his personality. This as well as his charisma drew others to him. He was caring and non-judgemental and enjoyed company and laughter. He made friends easily and had many in the chess community as well as throughout Winnipeg. He will be missed.

We would request that you add your comments and memories of him on this site to share with our family.

We would also like to thank the staff at the St. Boniface Hospital for all their care and assistance during this difficult time.

A celebration of life will take place at a later date.

Jay’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

I knew Jay for perhaps 45 years and he was a best  friend.  Manitoba Chess has set up a 5 week Memorial chess tournaent starting Nov. 1 and each tuesday thereafter. in his honour.  chess.chessmanitoba.org  I expect it will be a yearly event--and well deserved! This echoes the respect and care that the chess world felt and indeed all who knew Jay.  He was the most unique and remarkable person I have known and he lived life the way he wanted to live.  Although Jay could be annoyed by ignorance in the world, he was above any form of malice.  Jay loved the beauty and artistry of a great chess  game and we played over many hundreds of brilliant games.  Jay had the soul of a true artist and I will always miss his intelligence and his insight and the joy that he brought to a conversation.

Jay was a mentor to many chess players in Manitoba. I was one of them. In this role he was a kind of guru, passing on his version of chess and other sorts of wisdom. He was a searcher for the truth in a chess position and in so doing elevated all those around him.

I was a friend of Jairaj and we had many battles over the chess board, starting with my very first rated chess event back in November of 1995, but more often we would be analyzing chess games/positions and discussing lines over a few drinks. Jay was a unique individual with a plethora of interests aside from chess, including mathematics, politics, painting, and more recently poker. Whomever put that video together, well done! 👍 JMR

Still can’t think of a world without one of the most unique people I’ve ever known. I’ve always looked up to how fun and interesting his ways were. He’s been a someone I’ve worried about as I’m sure he’s done for me. Last I seen him he wasn’t looking so well and I felt it in my heart that he wasn’t scared or anything he loved everything in his life.. Money. He loved money… the first person to ever introduce me to the world of money and music. He looked out for me in a place most people can’t even imagine. And man will I ever miss my good friend… Hopefully he knows just how Much I worried for him. Id like to know if any service for him is available

Have many memories of Jay back in the day. Most I cant tell but I remember how we'd be crusing the highway in his chevy with a purpose of heading somewhere but with coffee cups of lemon gin and the magnetic chess board between us we never managed to get where we wanted and we really didnt care. Now Jay gets to play with the angels, he'll like that.
