LAWRENCE “LARRY” KICHAK

October 7, 1951 – May 19, 2025

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Larry Kichak at Health Sciences Centre, Winnipeg, on May 19th, 2025, at the age of 73.

Born in Winnipeg on October 7th, 1951, Larry will be lovingly cherished and missed dearly by his younger sister Sandy (Darrel); older brother Dennis (Colleen); sister-in-law Issey; as well as his nieces and nephews: Chad, Koreen, Warren, Kevin (Laurie), and Kyle (Niki). He also leaves behind dearly loved great-nieces and nephews, and will be remembered and missed by his dear uncles, aunts, and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents, Nick and Sophie (née Chabluk); his sister, Olive (who passed away in infancy); his brother, Terrence; and his nephew, Jamie.

Larry was a bright student and was exempt from his final graduating exams. He began his career at the Winnipeg Free Press, and later spent most of his working life at Impark, where he was especially dedicated, and concluded his working life at Superstore. In each role, he gave his best and took pride in his work, and was happiest when contributing and being part of a team.

Larry especially treasured his time with loved ones. He held countless dear memories with family and friends, spending time together over coffee and cards, and found great comfort simply being around people. He had a deep passion for music, much like the rest of the family, and was a big fan of sports, especially cheering on his beloved Jets and Blue Bombers.

In his young adulthood, Larry was diagnosed with schizophrenia, a condition that progressed and made it increasingly difficult for him to maintain employment, manage daily life, or feel a sense of belonging in society. Despite these huge challenges, Larry faced each day with great courage and resilience.

Larry’s journey was marked by numerous changes in care, which shows so much of the failings in our system - shifting medications, rotating doctors, and multiple housing placements throughout the city, often in environments lacking understanding and compassion for his illness. In spite of all the struggles, Larry kept unwavering hope.

Larry was a lover of life, a man of deep faith, and held a profound devotion to Mary, which sustained him through his darkest days and kept his spirit strong. Attending Mass brought him great joy, as did the time he spent with his parish community. He spoke often of Jesus, “The Prince of Peace.”

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Father Greg, whose sincere friendship brought light into Larry’s life, and to Maria, from Alphonsus, whose kindness will always be remembered.

A funeral Mass for Larry will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, June 5th at Saint Alphonsus Church, 315 Munroe Avenue, followed by a light lunch in the church hall, and finally, an Interment at Green Acres Cemetery.

Gone Too Soon

He left without a last goodbye,

A quiet hush beneath the sky.

So sudden was the parting day,

We never thought he’d go that way.

A brother dear, with a caring heart,

An uncle that loves us even when apart.

A cousin that loved all music too,

A friend, to many, old and new.

The days now feel a little gray,

Since life so quickly slipped away.

But in our hearts, he still remains,

In memories and love that stay.

We are sad, but not as those who fear,

For in our hearts, he’s ever near.

Until we meet on God’s heavenly shore -

forever his, forevermore.

Larry’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

I have many memories of visiting Larry. One in particular was in the mid 1980's when Terry, Warren and Larry visit us in St Vital on a late afternoon during the week. Big gulps in hand, sitting on the couch, Larry Truly found peace being around family and friends. Amen 🙏

Although Larry'S adult life was complicated and difficult for him to navigate he did so with strength and courage and determinatio.n. He was so misunderstood but we his family knew the kind loving caring guy he showed us he was. Being the same age as Larry and Gary we grew up quite to be quite close and there are many great memories of good fun times. As an example of Larry's caring ways a few years ago I had a biopsy done which was pretty scary and while waiting for results I received a phone call from Larry telling me everything was going to be ok and that he was praying for me. What a wonderful loving gesture that was and gave me comfort, That's the Larry I will remember with love always. Dear Larry we know where you are now as you deserve your place in Heaven and if not quite there yet God speed! sending you lots of love and big hugs from all of us in your big wonderful family!

My memories of Larry began when we were very young. Being first cousins and being a little over a month apart in age, we were very close. We saw alot of each other as our families visited back and forth all the time.. I remember the times I assisted Larry with his paper route while spending vacation with Uncle and Aunty. Larry was very organized with his paper route and the business end of it making sure the collection money was counted and kept separate from his own money Larry was very independant. He introduced me to swimming at the Sherbrook Pool, we went to movies together downtown going downtown by bus, We spent time at our Baba's out in the country alot as that was a gathering place for all of our aunties and uncles and our cousins year round. One summer, Larry and I stayed with our Baba and biked 4 miles to Cathecism together. We biked to Oasis together with our friend Ken, we biked to Kildonan Golf Course pulling our clubs behind us with one hand and steering with the other (without any bike paths) and never a problem. Larry enjoyed card games, yatzee, loved watching sports: Tzars, Bombers and Jets. He loved music and dancing and family gatherings. He enjoyed assisting people, was a good employee. It's a shame that his sickness changed his personality which eventually led him to a life of abuse & misunderstanding and frustrated him until he would become infuriated and would act out causing him to upset people which, unfortunately made his life even worse. Larry, you were a good, loving person beneath that sickness. You loved family and I pray you find peace in the home our Father has prepared for us. R.I.P. Vichnaya Pamyat!

I only have happy memories with you Larry especially when we watched movies together in Auntie and Uncles living room. I know you have a good heart and deserved a kinder life but through it all you were a survivor for many years. I sincerely hope you can see your brother Uncle Terry (if you do say "hi" for me, I miss visiting with him. Please rest in peace now.
