JOHN MCCRAE KILGOUR

September 9, 1949 - March 23, 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we announce John’s passing in Riverview Health Centre on March 23rd, 2023 at the age of 73.

John spent all but 6 hours at home during his 74 day battle with cancer, taken care of by his four sons and their families. A beautiful Northern Lights display could be seen over Winnipeg minutes after he passed.

John was a brother, uncle, grandfather, friend, but most importantly a father. He is survived by his 4. sons, Jay (Erin), Colin (Robin), Reid (Breanne), and Cameron (Krista); grandchildren, Danica, Jessica, Hudson, and Mia; siblings, Kathy and Jim; and many friends, too many to list.

John was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, attended St. John's-Ravenscourt School, followed by the University of Manitoba. He owned and operated a successful insurance brokerage for 40 years, retiring recently.

John’s happy place was his cabin on Lake of the Woods, in Lily Pad Bay.   Although he wasn’t a religious man, he would often say this is where he would “see his God”.  John Loved that cabin and was eager to share his piece of heaven with anyone who was willing to join him.  In fact, if you ever had a conversation with John, you probably got an invite out there.  He loved hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, boating, crushing cans and boy did he love a good bonfire.  His happiest times at the cabin were spent with his sons, their partners, and their friends.

John was a great friend and loved his friends deeply.  You all know who you are because he would call to tell you that regularly.

Above everything else, John loved his 4 boys.  He was always proud of them, went out of his way to tell them, and could often be heard bragging about them to whoever would listen.

A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 PM, Thursday May 4, at The Gates, 6945 Roblin Blvd, with a wake to follow at 4pm at Fionn’s Grant Park.

In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made directly to 1JustCity in support of the Fionn’s Food Fund.

John I’m sorry you were taken so soon. It was a blessing you had the opportunity to see how much the boys loved you. They were with you 24/7 until the end. I was glad to have played a bit part visiting and providing your favourite dainty “The peanut butter thing. Robyn

Skipping UofM classes to play all day bridge. Road trip  to T.O. in a 1963 XKE resulting in 4 speeding tickets. Solving world problems over liquor & beef at the Tilton Hilton. An early spring trudge across Coney to access the family cabin. Scuba classes with friends to enhance the southern vacation. Shingling Baby Huey`s roof-just because we could. Priceless memories.. My condolences to the family.

John was a true Mensch.  So many fond memories growing up with Jay, whether it be taking a boat ride at the cabin with the 3 John's (John, Johnny and John John) or tubing with Jay and John driving the boat throwing you off after hitting a huge wake and hearing them laugh as you were flying in the air. I was so glad my wife and kids got to go spend a day with Jay and John at the cabin a few years back, John took my oldest son and me on a side by side ride and had a few laughs and great conversation. Always kind, welcoming, funny and as anyone that knew him would agree honest. My thoughts and prayers go out to Jay, Erin and the Kilgour family.
