John King

JOHN KING
September 20, 1945 – December 9, 2025
It is with sadness that we announce the death of John King on December 9, 2025. John was born in the Ste. Rose Hospital, Ste. Rose, MB on September 20, 1945 and grew up on the family farm near Ochre River, MB. He attended Ochre River school, the D.C.T.I. in Dauphin and United College in Winnipeg. He resolved his early struggles with alcoholism and went on to devote the bulk of his adult life working with people battling addictions, as part of the Main Street Project and Homes for Growth and personally as part of the AA movement. He would have celebrated 55 years of sobriety this December 15, 2025.
While working in Calgary, John met his first wife, Martha Coffman; they were married on April 7, 1980. John met his second wife, Anna, in the United States where they were both pursuing their respective metaphysical interests. They were married in June 2000 and lived in Langwedel, Germany until John returned to Manitoba in 2018 where he resided until his death.
John had many interests during his life – he was a reader, a music aficionado, a writer, a peacemaker. He was a loving husband, stepfather, brother, uncle and friend. He worked in the counselling, retail, farming and mining industries but John’s focus was never on his career as such, but the people that he met on the journey. His myriad of interests, including Alcoholics Anonymous and the Munroe Institute, led to his making many friends in North America and Germany with whom he stayed in contact. In the final months of his life, he made more friends at the Golden Links Lodge.
John was predeceased by his father, Kenneth Myers King, in 1975; by his mother, Verna Rose King, in 1987; and by his first wife, Martha Coffman, in 2006. He was a beloved brother to Sharon Peters (Frank) and Vee (Verna) Adolf; a beloved uncle to their children – Wendy Peters, Rob Peters, Lisa Davis-Peters (Nick), Kurtis King (Caroline) and David Adolf; and a beloved great uncle to Alex Peters, Michael Cairns, Hayden Davis-Peters, Gabriel and Isabella King. He also leaves to mourn his loss his ex-wife Angelika (Anna) King, her son, Paul Lütjens and his brother-in-law Larry Adolf.
The family would like to extend their forever thanks to Dr. F. Ball and the caring team of nurses and support staff at Golden Links Lodge for their compassionate care of John during his stay there, especially during his final days.

I met John online many years ago because of our mutual interest in The Monroe Institute. Over the years we developed a close friendship. Whenever he was flying anywhere he would arrange a transfer in Toronto, and book extra time between flights so that we could meet, have lunch and mostly just talk.
He became a dear and loving and trusted friend. I missed him greatly when he moved to Germany, but we were still able to keep in touch thanks to Facebook.
I will miss John. May his memory always be held as a blessing for all that knew and loved him.
Goodbye my friend, and I know that I will see you again soon.

I knew John in the early '70's and bought a Chrysler from him. I could only pay half but he wasn't worried. It took me a few months to finish paying him. He was a fine fellow. My condolences.

John sat at the same dining table as my aunt in Golden Links Lodge. Chatting with him was a highlight of my visits. We talked about sports, his travels and he always asked about my day. I already miss our talks. I'm sure he will be deeply missed.
