LEONARD FREDERICK ALBERT KING

June 15 1938 – June 30 2022

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Leonard Frederick Albert King on June 30th 2022, in Winnipeg, at the age of 84 years.

He is predeceased by his father Lenard (2001); his mother Gertrude (1941); his step-mother Claudia (1998); his 1st wife Brigitte (July 4 1929 - April 8 2009); and most recently, his 2nd wife Eleanor (Feb 11 1938 - June 5 2022).

He is survived by his children:

Diana (Steve Ingham); Brian (Monika Najdychor); Susan (Peter Holfeuer); Gary (Tammy Hutchinson); Kenny (Connie Maynes); and Kathy.

His grandchildren;

Michelle, Brandon, Brian, Steven, Jason (RIP), Jessica, Darren, Christopher, Sabrina, Michael, Mathew and Kristina.

His great grandchildren:

Gino, Bella, Faith, Kyle, Konner, Thomas, Nora, Victoria, Theo, and Aurora.

His siblings:

Robert (Beverly); James (Sharon); and Joan (Don).

His cousins and many relatives in the King, Mitchell, and Goodrich families.

His many friends and relatives across Canada and Germany.

As well as his extended family:

Debby, Murray, Lori-Ann, Will, Abby, Colin, Ashley, Scott, Jessi, and Nikki.

Leonard was born in Brandon Manitoba and spent most of his formative years between Brandon, Carberry, and Winnipeg.

At the age of 17 he enlisted in the PPCLI (2nd Battalion Airbourne Division) and after training, was stationed in Iserlohn Germany where, shortly thereafter, he met and married Brigitte.

After returning to Canada; Brigitte and Leonard announced the birth of their first child Diana, and then within a year each successively; Brian, Susan and Gary.

To support his new growing family Leonard found work as a crash and rescue firefighter which he embraced passionately as his lifework. His vocation required long working hours and multiple transfers to Churchill, Carberry (where the twins Kathy and Kenny joined the family,) Beausejour, South Gillies, Thunder Bay, Winnipeg, and eventually to Regina.

In what little spare time he had, he also worked as an ambulance attendant, a house painter, a St John’s Ambulance first aid instructor, and as an EMO casualty simulator. He also took pleasure in building aircraft models and in drawing and painting fire prevention posters in a “Vargas” style for his workplace.

As his children grew up and moved away he found another passion in compiling a history of the PPCLI through a substantial display of uniforms, weapons and photographs. This display was eventually donated to the PPCLI museum in Shilo Manitoba where it now resides.

Leonard, was a past president of the PPCLI Association and like his father and grandfather before him, was also a long-time member of The Royal Canadian Legion.

After retirement he and Brigitte enjoyed travelling the USA and Europe and then after Brigitte passed away in 2009, Leonard remarried Eleanor Henderson in 2012. They lived for a few years in the King family home before eventually moving to Swindon Way where they lived out their remaining years.

Leonard’s family kindly requests that his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by visiting his tribute page at EthicalDeathCare.com. A photo-biography, as well as memories and stories published by those who knew him, are available there.

I was glad to know Leonard & Eleanor in recent years. He showed me through the museum pieces (though I'm sure not all of them!) and the family pictures. He always had a twinkle in his eye and made me feel like we shared inside jokes often. Imagine my surprise when I found out he was Brian's Dad! Boy was he a proud Dad. RIP Mr. King & my condolences to your family.

Sending huge hugs to the family! You are all in my thoughts and heart, as you prepare for the service. Lennie is forever remembered as a close part of our family! His love for Pop, Grandma, and his devotion to Mom, and family was endearing, and inspiring!  Yellow roses will always make me smile! ❤ Hugs to all!  Debbie Goodridge

Dianna, Brian, Susan, Gary, Kathy, Ken, and families: We were so sorry when we heard of Len’s passing as its so hard when when a sibling passes. We were really fortunate to have Len and Eleanor to dinner when they were in Calgary for Jessica’s wedding, as luck would have it Bob and Bev were visiting and we were able to have a mini family get together. I had just talked to Len after Eleanors passing and his birthday. We will miss our phone conversations, but are left with great family memories. Our thoughts are with you all..Love Auntie Joan and Uncle Don. 😮

First met Len when I was about 9yrs.old in 1952 as I was friends with his younger brother Jim. Later when he returned to Winnipeg with his wife Kitty. We would meet mostly at the King's family functions.  Always enjoyed his company and that of Kitty over the years and meeting his family.  He worked hard to raise a very nice family.  Rest in peace old friend. I will always remember Mr..King  fondly. His enthusiasm for PPCLI and pride of his extensive collection was amazing. He shared many great stories at the dinners he would prepare for his wife  Brigitte and me.  When I would come home to Wpg he would always make time to visit me and we always had lively conversations about  "the state of  the world"!  My heartfelt condolences to his lovely family.
