Shirley Ann Ethel Kitchen

(née Mansbridge)

July 26, 1933 - March 18, 2025

Shirley Ann Ethel Kitchen (née Mansbridge) passed peacefully at home with family by her side. Mom, Gramma, GG is survived by her children, Nanci (Vern), Jeff (Sharon), and Jane; grandchildren, Marley, Jennifer (Ben), Craig, Ben and Anna; great-grandson Oliver; her five granddogs; her sister Betty; and her nine nieces and nephews and their children.

Shirley was predeceased by her parents, Victor and Ethel; and her siblings, Mildred and Eric.

Mom had a zest for life. She was a nurse who worked in various health-care jobs; a television writer and producer; a world traveller both with her family and on her own; and a self-described nomad. Mom was very involved in her beloved Unitarian Church and had a lifelong passion for writing. She just published her first anthology of poetry.

Mom grew up on a farm near Minnedosa, and moved to Winnipeg to become a nurse. After marrying and starting her family, she went back to university to get a BA in English literature. Mom provided a loving and welcoming home, and encouraged our independence as we grew up, including teaching us how to cook, bake and do our own laundry. She fostered a love of the arts, including books, music and theatre, and was the longest serving volunteer at the Prairie Theatre Exchange. She was an accomplished pianist and her playing often filled her home. She loved spending time outdoors, including camping with her grandkids, listening to the geese at Fort Whyte Alive, and watching the sunset at the lake.

A celebration of Shirley’s life that was scheduled for April 22, 2025, has been postponed. We will share further details as they are confirmed.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the First Unitarian Universalist Church through the Winnipeg Foundation or to the Manitoba Writers Guild would be appreciated.

Shirley’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Through my meetings with Shirley I have come to understand exactly how amazing she truly was. She was fun, loving, and an absolute pleasure to be around. Every story I've ever heard of her has brought joy and smiles to everyone around and I'm glad to have known her for the wonderful person she was.

I'll always remember what a moving experience it was to participate in a mini-course that Shirley facilitated at the church years ago, about writing one's own spiritual autobiography. In no time, she had us all sharing and enthused about the topic and involved in the process. She was so affirming about each person's journey of discovery.

Aunt Shirley indeed had a zest for life! I loved every moment of our group travel adventures with her, Betty, Clair, my mom Margaret and Eric. (Philippines - Alaska ! ) i was grateful then as i am now for her care / support and love to me and my sons, Stefan and jacob. Best of all was her curiosity and fierce independence ! I will find a photo of our banaue rice terraces trek and post soon!

Kelly and I met Shirley at church not long after we moved to Winnipeg in 1974. Even in those early years, I found her grounded and compassionate, ready to listen and share wisdom. When we were thinking about having children, we sought Shirley's counsel about the decision. Her advices supported us in our early years of parenting. And she always asked after our kids, long after they both moved away from Winnipeg. She was always one of my "wise older women," and I will miss her smile and hugs.

I knew Shirley for essentially my whole life as she was the Mom of my best friend Jeff. She was a wonderful woman who was always kind and thoughtful She had a keen mind and always interested in what was going on. Shirley had a strong independent spirit and a great love of family. She will be greatly missed and our thoughts are with family.

Shirley was a wonderful church friend. We went canoeing once either on the Assiniboine or La Salle rivers. It was a lovely experience. I was exhausted after but Shirley was still full of energy!

Shirley was a friendly ,kind ,creative soul , who was not shy at speaking up in a positive way. We shared Wildwood Park roots and she loved to tell me the story about how my mom talked to her about the Unitarian Church. Shirley was a long time valued commiittee member on our Memory Garden project. My thoughts and wishes go out to Nancy, Jeff, and Jane and all the extended family.

Shirley was a mentor to me. The Women's Group at the Unitarian Universalist church on Banning was where I met Shirley(one of many strong UU Winnipeg women). It took us a while to take to each other. After that initial struggle I could talk to her as if we were lifelong friends. She broached many life struggles I was wary of but needed to talk about. She probably saved my life at some point. I was glad she was able to join us at Sunday services this last little while. Wherever you are Shirley keep writing poetry. Much love.

Shirley was a church friend and mentor. I will remember her insatiable curiosity about people and life, the wisdom in her poetry, discussing the freedom of cross-country skiing, her deep love of family and her giggles. Rest in peace, Shirley. May your family find solace in a life well lived.

Shirley was one of the first people we met at Unitarian gatherings across the prairies in the 1980s. She was always warm, kind, and tuned-in. We will miss her.

Shirley: poet; camper; traveller; nature lover; mother; grandmother; feminist; friend. Always an inspiration. Thank you for the wonderful company and the many visits to Fort Whyte. Your smile and energy live on. Much love, from all of us.

I'm so sorry to hear of Shirley's passing. When I think about your home growing up, I remember how it was filled with creativity and love, what a thrill it was to sit down at Shirley's typewriter, and how cool I thought her job was at Videon. She was an early role model for me of strong, independent women living life on their own terms. It is an honour to have met her.

My sincere condolences, Jane, to you and your fsmilyfamily.

I remember riding on the bench seat of Shirley's Volkswagen bus careening down the highway between the farm and Neepawa.....Shirley at the wheel with a big smile on her face...Until that moment i did not know that a VW bus was a race car. She was a special lady. My thoughts are with her family as they celebrate her life and mourn her loss.
