In Loving Memory of
CALVIN MURRAY KITCHING

May 14, 1954 – March 28, 2026

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Calvin at his home on March 28, 2026, at the age of 71.

Cal’s memory lives on through his brothers, Terry (Karen) and Larry (Terry); as well as his nieces and nephews: Melissa (Nolan), Derek, Katie (Mark), Amy, and Kevin. He was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Lorene Kitching; and his infant brother, Leslie.

Born on May 14,1954, Cal spent his youth living and growing up in Woodhaven. He commenced his education at Woodhaven elementary school. Later attending Bannatyne Junior High and Silver Heights High school. Cal participated regularly in athletic activities, dedicating substantial time to the outdoor rink in Woodhaven. He was the proud recipient of the Fred Wood Award given to community members who exemplify strong character and work ethics.

During his teenage years, Cal balanced life in the city with summers spent working on his uncle’s farm. These formative experiences shaped his strong work ethic and appreciation for both urban and rural living. The time he dedicated to the farm each year reflected his commitment to family and his willingness to lend a helping hand wherever needed.

At the age of eighteen, Cal went on to pursue his dream of becoming a professional hockey player. Drafted by the Victoria Cougars of the WCHL in 1972, Cal left home to play hockey. Over the following year, he joined the Calgary Centennials with the aim of attracting attention from NHL teams. Regrettably, he did not receive any attention. The following year he went to play for the Copper County Chiefs of the USHL. He would joke it was the “U Should have Hung them up League”! It was said that the film “Slapshot” drew inspiration from the outrageous behaviour of this team in the league!

Unfortunately, a serious motorcycle accident ended his dream of becoming a pro athlete. Cal settled into a long and productive employment career in sales for a plumbing firm and later the garage door industry. Cal was a kind, fun loving person. Cal, always up for fun, frequently toasted and shouted "Sociable!" during the evening. He was always willing to share a story and a laugh with anyone. He will be missed.

In accordance with Cal’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal funeral service will be held. A private Celebration of Life for immediate family will be scheduled later.

If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation or the charity of one’s choice.

Rest easy,

“Cooly!”
