HELEN KOSACK

(née SUM)

May 20, 1943 – November 23, 2022

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Helen, wife of Larry for 55 years. She leaves behind her loving husband Larry and dear son Kurtis, her brother Peter (Brenda), and twin brother Alex (MaryAnne). As well as many cousins, Joy (Bob), Ruth (Gord), Lilly (Michael), and Joe, and many friends.

Helen was predeceased by her dear daughter Lisa, her parents Daria and William Sum, her brothers John (Alice) and Michael, and sister Anne (Joe).

Helen was born in Dennis Lake, MB and attended North Polsen School; where Helen and Alex had the same teacher for 7 years, Mr. John Miller. In 1950, they received a new teacher, Mrs. Helen Klowak, our Helen’s favourite teacher!

In 1957, the Sum family moved to East Selkirk, MB where Helen attended Happy Thought School, and completed her high school education at Selkirk Collegiate. Thereafter, Helen received formal education through Teacher’s College in Winnipeg. She spent her teaching career with River East Transcona School Division and Kurtis recalls Helen being his Substitute Teacher on many occasions; he claims she was the “toughest one around.”

Helen loved to share bright hope for the future from the Bible and had strong faith in the resurrection hope. “He will wipe out every tear from their eyes and death will be no more neither will mourning, nor cry, nor pain be any more the former things have passed away.” (Rev. 21: 3, 4) Helen had strong faith in the resurrection and knew that “God’s promises always come true.” (Isa. 55: 11)

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, December 10th at 2:30 at 930 Pandora Ave W or via Zoom for those who cannot attend. Masks are not mandatory but strongly recommended.

I will forever love and miss my second mother. When I was a child growing up with Kurtis as my closest friend, Helen was kind, caring and also tough!.. but in a way that I knew even then was rooted in wanting the best for Kurtis and I. She valued our friendship, and treated me like her own son. As I grew up, her advice and well-wishes towards myself and my eventual wife were always appreciated and valued. Her infectious laugh brought a smile to everyone within hearing distance, and kindness exuded from eyes. We're heartbroken and devastated by her loss, but are comforted in the knowledge that Helen will see Lisa again.  Our deepest condolences go out to Larry, Kurtis, and all who love Helen.

I was very sorry to hear of Helen’s illness and passing. I extend my sympathies to her family and friends. May all those who are grieving her loss find comfort in their memories of happy times spent with Helen. Helen was my father in law’s twin sister. I enjoyed hearing stories of their early years together. I didn’t see aunt Helen often, but will always remember her as being an incredibly kind and gentle person with a beautiful smile. She will be missed!

We were heartbroken to hear of Helen's illness and subsequent passing. Helen will be sadly missed by everyone who knew her. To know her was to love her. We shared a  special bond because of the friendship between our sons. They gave us plenty to talk about. Although a teacher, Helen remained very humble. She often made fun of herself, yet was generous with compliments towards others. As others have mentioned, Helen was known for her hearty laugh. We will miss hearing it. Or deepest sympathies to Larry and Kurtis at this difficult time.❤
