MERVIN GLENN KRUGER

March 6, 1939 - June 13, 2022

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mervin Glenn Kruger aka dad, pops, gramps, great grampa, smurf who passed June 13, 2022, in Kenora, Ontario.

Born in Miniota, Manitoba to Raymond Kruger and Trudy Lelond. Survived by his three children, Shelley Torrie (Maurice), Brent Kruger (Cindy), and Shari Wilson (Gary); grandchildren, Jayme Blyth (Lee), Kyle Torrie (Kristy), Brandon Kruger, Josh Wilson, and Jake Wilson; great grandchildren, Tucker and Beckett Blyth; and sisters, Donna Holmi and Betty Greksa.

Merv set out to be a jockey in 1960 in Winnipeg and was a force to be reckoned with – his stature and determination made him leading rider at a number of racetracks both in the US and Canada. After retiring from the track, he moved back to Kenora and drove a rocktruck during the construction of the Bypass. Following that he bartended at the Kenwood Brass Rail for a number of years until he retired. He was a people person, had an arsenal of jokes/stories, won his share of pool tournaments. He had a great love for his grandchildren and in his later years loved to take his scooter to the Norman Dam to watch his youngest grandsons, Jake & Josh, fish. His scooter gave him a new lease on life, and he would often scoot over to Keewatin for a visit with family and friends and have a beer on the dock.

In the past few years when his health was failing, he said “If I’d known I was going to live this long I’d have taken better care of myself”. His philosophy was that if you’re not living on the edge, you’re taking up too much space.

One of his favourite songs was by Frank Sinatra – “I did it my way” and he certainly did!

He lived large and his accomplishments were many. He will be missed immensely but never forgotten.

A family celebration of life will be held at a later date. In the meantime, Mervin's family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Ride like the wind dad!

“Ciao”

My condolences to Merv's Family, Merv. & I were friends for a while in Brandon Manitoba & rode motorcycles together when we were teenagers. We were riding down 10th st. in Brandon when a lady in a car ran a stop sign, it missed me but Merv went into the centre post of her car with his face & I rode to the Hospital with him where he took about 60 stitches & the little blond nurse said to him it must be very painful, he said as long as you hold my hand I don't feel any pain. The wife & I moved to B.C. in 1960 & I lost track of him till I spotted this obituary tonight. March13,,2024 There was never a dull moment when you were with Merv. I am glad he had a good life, I often thought of him but never knew what happened to him!
