The Quilt of One Hundred Years

Some lives announce themselves with trumpets,

or with names engraved in stone.

But yours was written another way.

In the soft rhythm of needles crossing wool, of thread finding its place,

of tiny stitches holding what otherwise might come apart.

You knew that love could be measured in loaves.

The quiet miracle of flour and water,

of patient hands waiting for dough to rise,

until the whole house smelled like welcome.

You pieced together quilts as though you understood

what the earth itself has always known—

that beauty is not made from one perfect cloth,

but from many fragments, carefully joined,

until they become warm enough to shelter another.

Nine children grew beneath your watch,

like a small forest.

There were scraped knees, laughter, worries carried into the night,

birthdays, winter boots drying by the stove,

and always, another meal to prepare, another shirt to mend,

another heart to steady.

With your husband, you carried the weight

of a business—

not only its books or its long days,

but the unseen work of believing that tomorrow

would be met with courage.

You may not have called it courage.

Perhaps you simply called it Monday.

Now a hundred years have gathered around you like autumn light.

The hands that knitted, sewed, kneaded, counted,

comforted, and blessed,

have taught us that greatness does not always seek attention.

Sometimes it wears an apron. Sometimes it hums while it works.

Sometimes it leaves behind, not monuments,

but children, quilts, recipes, stories,

and a way of living that quietly says: Pay attention!

This ordinary day, these ordinary hands, this ordinary love—

they are enough to change the world.

Funeral Mass will take place on August 6, 2026 at 1:30pm at the RC Church in McCreary, MB with Rev. Leo Fernandes officiating. Burial will follow at the McCreary RC Cemetery.
