PIERRE “PETE” MARCEL ANDRE LACHIVER
Asiniing Oda Bateh
Mist On The Rock
Makwa Dodem - Bear Clan
June 9, 1962 - March 24, 2025
Beloved husband of Jocelyne Bourbonnais, whom he had known since middle school, Pierre left for the Spirit world from his home, surrounded by family and friends, after 15 months of failing health. Predeceased by parents Marcel Lachiver and Ginette Pierette Boulanger, infant brother Alain, sister Arlette, daughter Virginia Rose, and brother in-law Billy Earle. Survived by our children Hussein (Ashtyn), Natalia (Galen), Gabe and Pierre’s daughter Dominique; sisters Annick (Brian), Monique, Suzanne (Patrick), and Sandra; brothers Michel (Jamie), Roger, Joel (Francine), Yvon (Tammy), and brother in-law Hubert, many nieces and nephews, and many friends.
Pierre’s parents immigrated by boat from France in 1951; his father from Plouigneau in Bretagne, his mother from Paris. Pierre was very proud of his Breton roots. He grew up in the close French community of St. George, MB, surrounded by the woods he loved and close to his favourite refuge the Maskwa River.
Following high school in Powerview he attended Red River Polytech. He became the youngest person in Canada to graduate as an aircraft maintenance flight engineer. His expertise led him to work on a variety of planes in the Canadian Arctic, South America and even Antarctica. Making aviation history, he was instrumental in landing on polar ice with fixed gear. On 13 occasions he ensured safe flights for adventure seekers through the Drake Passage to the South Pole, refuelling in midair.
From a young age he demonstrated an immense competency and resourcefulness for problem solving and fixing things. He pursued a second career as a Red Seal mechanic specializing in commercial refrigeration and gas fitting. His work included large provincial and federal projects such as Keeyask Dam in northern Manitoba, LNG Canada Plant in Kitimat, BC, and Atomic Energy Canada Ltd. in Pinawa, MB.
Pierre was raised in the Roman Catholic faith. His curious nature and love of reading led him to study other faiths. Traditional Anishinaabe Teachings is where he found healing and embraced this spiritual life wholeheartedly. He was Creator’s servant: singing at the Big Drum, helping at Ceremonies, Sundance, Pow Wows and Teaching Lodges.
He was a skilled artisan who made hand drums, shakers and fans. Many of us were gifted these cherished items. He loved exploring the bountiful woods that surrounded our home and his beautiful garden.
His love of music was part of his healing journey in many ways. The laughter and joy that we experienced when he played his harmonica revealed the playful child in him. Pierre loved words, books and history, resulting in stacks of journals. His creative writing gave homage to his love and appreciation of nature. He understood that everything has a spirit and all life is connected. This was evident in his deep connection with Justice, our beloved four-legged friend, as they walked the woods daily. Gakina ginemaganak - We are all related.
The fire of his personality expressed itself in many ways: a marathon runner, a swimmer, a man with an intense work ethic, a tinkerer, carefully caring for his tools and equipment, meticulous and methodical. Pierre loved to dance and had a flair for fashion …. perhaps from his Parisian mother, whom he thought was radiant and beautiful.
He did not suffer fools gladly, but he welcomed visitors to our home generously. He initiated conversation with people from all walks of life, from the unhoused to celebrities. Pierre studied the Bible passionately and followed the principle “to feed the poor, look after the widow and take care of the prisoner”. He will be missed by many people. He had a special bond with his childhood friends and his niece Tanya. We all wish him well on his journey. His community loved him, and we are grateful to everyone who cared for him in our home.
According to his wishes, a Celebration of Life led by Elder William Campbell will take place at 1:00pm on Saturday, May 24, 2025 at 41108 Stead Road in Gull Lake, MB. In case of rain the date will be changed to Saturday, May 31, 2025.
“Somewhere between right and wrong there is a garden, and I will meet you there.”

Omgosh, I'm so glad I was able to reconnect with Pete, it's been 5 years of stories, teachings, laughter and lastly, texts, to see how he was doing. The world definitely lost a great man, I will miss this guy, but also, happy knowing he's with his loved ones up above ❤️

He drove in like a souped-up Maserati and she knew it then-he would always be the one.She matched him turn for turn, both of them carrying their own storms inside. They were two hurricanes that somehow found peace in each other's eyes, broken parts fitting together like weather worn pieces.Through the lightning of their battles and the thunder of their hearts, they'd always find their way back,as if their scars were really road maps leading home. She knows they'll meet again-him, her and their faithful Justice.
"See you in abit, Lovey " she whispers to the starlit sky. Star People that's who we are in the end . XOXO Viola

I came across a deceased bear, remember that Jocelyne? .. I called upon you both & Pierre was there in a heartbeat .. I could see the sadness in him when he saw the very young bear ~ we didn't speak a word as he sprinkled tobacco over it & whispered a prayer sending the poor one on his next journey. Then he turned to me and gave me a great hug with tears in both our eyes & somehow, somehow, he managed to get that bear into the back of his pick up. There was no way he was leaving it on the side of the road. It was a teachable moment for me, as all moments were with time spent with Pierre, I'm sure all can agree. From his infectious smile to his love for you Jocelyne, you must truly feel blessed to have loved and been loved by sweet Pierre. A celebration of life indeed ~ see you there. Pierre & Justice will greet us all. Love, strength & warm hugs to you ~ my sincere condolences to you and your family ❤️.

Would like to acknowledge Pierre as a dear friend/brother and acknowledge him and his life partner Joceylyn in sharing thier home and land for others to have an opportunity for healing ceremonies and holistic health and wellness. Through his life and knowledge, life experiences he has helped and provided support for many in many ways. He was a very humble man and appreciated seeing others enjoy his home and land.

My condolences to you and your family Jocelyne. What a beautiful video as well. I remember the first time meeting Pierre. I never did call him Pete. You brought him by to look at extending my propane line to my bbq and he was very well dressed for that day. You commented how he loved to wear his best linens and fedora at every opportunity.
I'm glad I got to speak with him recently at the store and also last fall when I took down an apple tree to build a garage. He was very keen in having a big limb so a friend of his could make a recurve bow out of it A couple days later he stopped by and we loaded it into his truck And there was that Pierre smile. Take care.

My very favourite memory of Pierre was our Grade 11 train trip to Calgary and Banff. We left in the evening and after many hours of excitement (many laughs with "Pete")we were desperate for sleep. We all tried to get comfortable in the chairs we had, but it was difficult to say the least, when all of a sudden we heard a big,
satisfied sigh. We all looked up to see Pierre happily stetched out on the upper luggage rack. He was nestled among all the bags, laughing at us all squeezed together.

I appreciate Pierre and his spirit very much. I felt a connection with Pierre the moment I met him. He felt different, he was quiet but he had a magnetism I couldn't ignore. I found myself spending time around him, tending to the fire at my first Sundance. When he spoke, I listened intently. I felt he wasn't speaking to me, but was rather speaking from his heart to whoever was listening. He had a powerful singing voice, and shared Songs with me by the fire. He was a witness to me walking with the buffalo... he spoke with me after and he reallysaid the right thing at the right time. I believe another one of his gifts. The lovers and protectors of the forests and natural places aknowledge Pierre with love and appreciation. May his spirit be guided to travel swiftly with love back home to creator.

Jocelyn, my deepest whole hearted condolences to you . You and Pierre became our family when you lead me and my late husband Jody through his indigenous journey. Then when I lost my Jody, you and Pierre were immediately there for prayer and comfort . You both were instrumental in my healing. I could listen to Pierre speak for hours . His words so engaging , soft , meaningful and spiritual . I will carry a piece of Pierre in my heart . I am a better human for knowing him .

These pictures perfectly reflect the Pierre I came to know almost 30 years ago. I was fortunate to work with him on a very creative and deeply personal theatre project. His performance as the lead character touched the hearts of so many people. I will never forget watching Pierre on stage by himself prior to our performance in Edmonton, dancing alone to the song by Natalie Merchant - Carnival. He lived intensely, and burned brightly during his time with us. Forever grateful to have been part of his journey and to know Jocelyne as well. ❤️

A smiling, beautiful, truth-telling, adventurous, no-nonsense man, you always kept it real with me - the good, the bad, and the ugly. With so much heaviness in the world, you reminded me to get out on the land and keep it simple. You taught me that no one can make me feel bad unless I let them. You also taught me that if I need answers, I should put down my tobacco by a tree in nature and ask Creator (God) for strength and clarity. My heart is a lot less full without you in this life, but I can hear you saying, 'Nah, I'll always be there, relax.' I love you and will never forget you, harmonica-playing crazy diamond.
