GREGORY JOSEPH LACOMY
August 30, 1939 - April 25, 2026
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gregory Joseph Lacomy on Saturday, April 25, 2026 at the age of 86.
Greg was born on August 30, 1939 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Greg grew up in the North End, where a love of hockey took root early and never faded. Greg spent countless hours at the neighbourhood rinks, not only developing his skills but also deepening his appreciation for the game and the community around it. That dedication and talent carried Greg to the University of Denver, where he proudly competed in NCAA hockey and won a national championship. This achievement reflected his discipline and passion, and also earned him recognition in the University of Denver Hockey Hall of Fame, as well as The Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame.
Family was always at the centre of everything Greg did. Greg married the love of his life, Joan Lacomy (nee Hunka) on August 18, 1962. Together, they raised three amazing children - Brad (Alisa) Lacomy, Michelle (Marvin) Namaka, and Carmelle (Kevin) Lacomy-Pich, and then welcomed and adored five grandchildren - Brett, Danica, Braedon, Tori, and Karter. Greg always treasured quality time with his family, especially summers at the cottage in Winnipeg Beach. Whether as a spouse, father, or grandfather, Greg was a steady source of support, wisdom and love. He embraced every milestone and made sure he was available to attend all his kids and grandkids sporting events. His presence shaped countless memories and created a foundation the family will carry forward.
Professionally, Greg held a distinguished position as Deputy Minister of Agriculture for the Provincial Government of Manitoba. His career longevity was attributed to his dedication, integrity, leadership skills, and his visionary approach. He earned the respect of colleagues through his hard work, steady sense of responsibility, and his commitment to making a difference.
Hockey was never just a chapter in Greg’s life. It was a lifelong thread. After his playing years, Greg gave back to the sport by coaching and mentoring. He emphasized teamwork, resilience and character, leaving a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to learn from him.
Greg will be remembered for his strength, deep loyalty to family, and his passion for hockey.
Greg is survived by his children and grandchildren and is predeceased by his beloved wife (Joan Lacomy), his sister and brother-in-law (Joanne and Joe Sawchuk), his parents (Mary and Joseph Lacomy), his parents-in-laws (Minnie and John Hunka), and his brother-in-law (John Reeves).
A private family service will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, a donation to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Sincere condolences to the Lacomy Family. Greg and I became friends for life during our time as Coaches with U of Manitoba Bisons Men's Hockey Team. Greg's elite Coaching skills (technical & tactical) rubbed off on everyone who had the opportunity to work with Greg, both players and Coaches alike. Some "Lacomyisms" that come to mind that I will never forget: "Mambie, bambie's" when describing soft players or soft teams: "Don't tell me-show me!" when instilling some purpose to talkative players that were talking a good game but weren't contributing enough for Greg's liking.
I still love Coaching, and the skills and passion I drew from Greg have remained with me for my entire career.
The "North End Hockey Gods" team just got a whole lot better. RIP Coach Greg.

My sincere condolences to the family. Coach Lacomy had a significant impact on my teenage years. Playing for CUAC juveniles has left me with memories of Sunday morning outdoor practices, making new friends, and learning how to compete. I am always grateful for the lessons learned and fun. Thanks coach.

It was with deep sadness that I learned of Greg's passing. As our neighbour of over fifty years he was much more than a neighbour. He was a true friend to our family and over the years I very much appreciated our conversations on life in general, especially the guidance and assistance he provided in helping me decide my career path. We couldn't have asked for a better neighbour. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to Brad, Michelle, Carmelle and your families.. Your dad will be fondly remembered.

Mr. Lacomy was my grandparents neighbor and then my neighbor when when my sister bought my dad's childhood home. We got to know him and Joan, and his daughter Carmelo (who was our childhood baby sitter during the summers) so well and we always loved our visits as children when we visited our grandparents, and well into adulthood. I would spend time hanging out with him in his garage and then as an adult just chatting in the evenings. He was always so happy to just hang out in the yard and chat. He always had a meticulous yard and driveway was always shoveled as soon as it snowed. He was a wonderful man with a wonderful family. My deepest condolences to his family.

Mr Lacomy guided me and provided me with support and opportunity as a young boy chasing a dream. His words of encouragement and suggestions he offered to help me chose the path to make my dream a reality will never be forgotten. Great coach, great mentor and most of all a great man!

So sorry for the loss of your dad.
Greg was a great cousin! My conversations with him over the last few years were spent talking about the "good old days"! Greg was so proud of his north end roots - he loved sharing stories of growing up in the north end! Our conversations were never short! One of my fondest memories will always be how he'd load all us kids into his convertible and drive out to Winnipeg Beach for a swim - so much fun! And our conversations always ended by talking about Xmas Eve that my folks annually hosted at 1107 Polson Bay - always a great family party!
Your dad will be remembered and missed by many.

I knew Greg for many years during his time with the Manitoba Department of Agriculture. He was a straight shooter whose integrity and competence were unquestionable. He possessed a heart of gold and a pragmatic mind, consistently getting things done within the department. As a far-sighted leader, he initiated and spearheaded a ten-year strategic vision to improve the agricultural sector and the lives of farm families in Manitoba. In this and many other respects I think that Greg never fully appreciated his contributions to the department and its clients.
Greg inspired loyalty and respect among his colleagues by remaining fair, considerate, and true to his word. He genuinely cared about people and brought out the best in us. Greg was a sharp realist—certainly "no man’s fool" within the competitive provincial bureaucracy. He was undoubtedly one of the finest branch directors and deputy ministers to serve the Manitoba Government, rising to the very top of the career civil service. As an outstanding, non-partisan public servant, he earned the respect of every Minister he served, regardless of their political affiliation.
To me, Greg was a steadfast friend whose thoughtfulness, honesty, wisdom, and advice I will always cherish. I was dearly blessed to have Greg as part of my world. He was one of those rare individuals who impacted my life for the better.

I first met Greg in 1971, when I applied to be a market anayst in the Dept. of Agriculture. He influenced the panel to select me. As my Deputy Minister, he was again influential in my application for disabilty benefits as my career ended too soon with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. When I learned of his Hall of Fame induction, I phoned and reminsced with him. I owed my government career to him. He will be in my hall of fame for the rest of my days. Blessings on the family.

Greg Lacomy - What a great man. I was lucky to know him. In junior hockey - I was always a player on the other side of his superb coaching - yet I learned so much. I could see it through the fierce competitors that I always faced in the West Kildonan North Stars. And the players - who are friends of mine now and quite honestly were even back then - were obviously so very well coached and beautifully mentored. I was extremely fortunate to have some great and valued talks with Greg later in life as our paths continued to cross via the game he loved - hockey. Thx for what you did for my friends Greg Lacomy - and thank you for everything.

Greg was our head coach with CUAC when we captured the Manitoba Juvenile Provincial Hockey championship in 1968. Greg was the ultimate motivator to the extent we would have "gone through a brick wall" for our coach! We had the utmost respect for Greg whether it be on the rink or related to life in general. My most sincere condolences to his family! Rest in Peace Greg!
