RICHARD CHARLES LAIRD

(RICK)

December 8, 1959 - February 18, 2025

It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our brother, Rick on February 18, 2025. Rick had recently completed treatment for cancer and was healing from that when he had a heart attack. He was 65 yrs old, the youngest of 4 children.

Rick was predeceased by his parents, Charlie and Billie Laird and his nephew Luke Hart. He is survived by his 3 sisters, all in Kelowna, Barbara (Jim Hart), Linda (Allen Tozer), and Leslie (Dave Calder), nieces and nephews, Kate Hart, Chad Hart(Katie), Sara Hart, Laura Tozer (Ray Lee), Alexa Tozer, great nieces and nephews, Taris Eli, Tyrell Eli, Zane Lee and Danica Lee and great-great nephew Mason Eli.

Rick was born in Wichita, Kansas in 1959 when Dad moved the family from Regina. We moved back to Canada and settled in Winnipeg in 1965 where Rick lived until present.

For most of his career, Rick drove semi trucks for Pepsi, EBD and GFS as well as training new drivers, including a young Jim Nicolson.

By 1978, the whole family had moved to Kelowna, BC. Rick chose to stay in Winnipeg to be with his friends. When he wasn't able to make it out to Kelowna for Christmases, the Stewarts always invited him to join them. Rick adored Chuck, Marg and their 3 daughters Leslie, Linda and Karen who became his Winnipeg family.

In his younger years, Rick enjoyed performing magic tricks, making animated films, going to concerts of his favorite artists, KISS and Alice Cooper and painting. By 1987, he joined a gym and started a lifelong passion for weight lifting and strength training. He set a goal to bench press 500 lbs and got very close when covid hit and closed down his gym. He was pretty built and loved showing off his muscles to his young nieces and nephews, as well as his friend's kids. To them he was larger than life.

He enjoyed mentoring young weightlifters in strength training and recommending fitness routines including nutrition. One of his gym buddies was Jim Nicolson. Jim and Rick became very close friends.

Rick was very proud of his Scottish heritage, as is evident in many of his tattoos. When he visited Scotland in 1999, William Wallace became his hero. He decorated his walls with his clans' tartans, a replica of the sword his hero had wielded in battle, Scottish flags, a picture of Eileen Donan castle and other memorabilia.

He shared his love of Scotland with Jim Nicolson, whom he lovingly dubbed Hamish. Together they competed in the Scottish Heavy Games several times in Winnipeg with a goal to compete in the games in Scotland.

Hamish and his wife Melissa also played an integral part in Rick's life. It was Rick's goal to travel to Scotland one more time and a part of him will next year with Hamish and Melissa.....

Rick will be remembered for his wry sense of humor, his loyalty, his love of animals, nature, and chocolate..... A man who did it his way… marching to the beat of a different drum.

Sorry to have missed the Celebration of Life for Rick, I would have been honored to attend. Rick never missed sending me a happy birthday message every year and in between messages to say hi. Rick was a friend of my brothers since school. After my brother passed away 2021, Rick would sent me messages afterwards with happy memories including this picture of the friends going to Minneapolis to see Kiss in around 1978--Mitch, Phil, Rick and Bob. Condolences to the family. Rick you will be missed.

Rick was a great neighbor to have, we met 20 years ago from parking next to each other. He was always a pleasure to see and talk with. Rick liked to talk about what was happening in his life and was very open. Made this a more enjoyable place to live. He will be missed. Condolences to Rick's family for your loss.

My sincere condolences to Rick’s family. I was saddened to learn of his passing, especially at such a young age. The lovely tribute and photo-biography brought back many fond memories. One thing that stands out the most is how often he spoke so proudly and lovingly of his family. Even though they were far away geographically, they were never far from his thoughts. A good man, gone far too soon!

I worked with Rick at Pepsi side by side for a number of years he was a great coworker and most of all a even better friend. Though Rick and I had moved to different departments with Pepsi we still maintain our friendship. RIP Rick !

Rick was a life long friend and we stayed in touch throughout the years. He had a wicked sense of humor and could make me laugh about almost anything. He was very close to my brother Phil as well and they hung out a lot and Phil helped drive him to the doctors for his cancer treatments. After fighting and then beating cancer it was a shock to all of us when he suddenly passed. Rick and I loved to talk about unusual things like Sasquatches and other obscure subjects. He was interested in everything and was definitely a one of a kind person who marched to his own drum and did so joyfully. I'll miss him terribly.

See you on the other side Rick. ❤️

rick and i developed an interest in magicians, harry houdini being

my idol as a youth.Rick bought some handcuffs and learned how

to escape from them like houdini.Rick, enjoyed performing close

up magic tricks and pursuing his weightlifting. As a youth we both

enjoyed bodybuilding and Rick did incredibly well building his phisique. Many, beautiful people like rick, theyre lives senselessly

and shamefully taken by cancer"death came like a thief in the night".Farewell Ricky until we meet again.

Am very shocked and sadenned at ricks passing away.He was always

a gentle giant and a pleasant person.I remember rick had the hand of

an angel and his drawings in ink would be worth big dollars.Rick was

a good boxer, and we sparred in my basement, where i had a speed bag.

Rick outclassed me on that occassion and gave me a bloody nose.Rick

furthermore was a good buddy with a truely magnetic personality. He

enjoyed doing magic tricks with me and derrick and we shared an interest

in the martial arts, when bruce lee was the inspiration. Also, rick believed

in core values and getting somewhere in life. His weightlifting and body

building only leaves a legend beyond words behind. Many condolenced

to leslie and dave.Farewell,my great brother rick you will be dearly missed.
