Ken Land

KENNETH LINDSAY LAND
April 19, 1957 – September 27, 2025
It is with the utmost sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Kenneth Lindsay Land on September 27, 2025, at the age of 68.
Ken leaves behind his loving wife Cathy; daughters, Caralynn (Trish), Michelle (Tony), Sarah (Kenny), and Elise (Alex). He will be forever remembered by the latest lights of his life, his grandchildren, Bennett, Lucas, Georgia, Abigail, Oliver, Nora, Finley, and Theo. They will miss always getting the whipped cream from the beaters, and copious amounts of popcorn from his giant bowl.
He also leaves behind his mother Gerry; Aunt Ginny; siblings, Karen, Kelly (Kathleen, nephews Patrick and Kevin), Jen; and many extended family members and friends. He was predeceased, in 2018, by his father Willard Land.
Growing up in Riverview, Ken played baseball, soccer, hockey, and wrestled out of the community club. Though scrawny for his age, he proudly held the championship lightweight wrestling title until he was forced to “hang up his boots” because he aged out of his weight class.
Ken attended the University of Manitoba, obtaining a Bachelors of Commerce and Bachelors of Science in Agriculture. It was during this time that he had a chance meeting with the love of his life, Cathy. The two married and Ken’s job as a salesperson took them to Saskatchewan and Alberta where they started their family. Winnipeg always felt like home, and Ken and his gaggle of girls ended up back in Riverview. While back in Winnipeg, Ken worked to complete his CGA certification.
He volunteered his time coaching and serving as the treasurer, and president of the community centre. You could always catch him in attendance at the kids sporting events, recitals, and competitions. Standing stoically at the side, you never knew what he was thinking--unless it was hockey. We knew despite his quiet demeanour and dry sarcasm, he was always very proud. As the girls grew, he knew the exact amount of silence necessary for the many late-night pickups with their friends (the entirety of the ride).
Ken’s work shifted, and he, along with his good friend Carla took over the reins at St. Mary’s Nursery and Garden Centre. Although the garden centre required long hours, Ken ensured he got to spend quality time with his girls, through free labour and eventually selflessly hiring them (and even firing one of them twice). During any season you could find him hanging dangerously off a ladder, burning brush in the back, or at his desk eating the expired candy from their shelves.
Ken continued his love of soccer, playing for the Riverview Rowdies through multiple injuries. In his free time he would go to his happy place, the family cabin at White Lake. He enjoyed every season and instilled a deep love of nature in his family. Some of his favourite things were snowshoeing, bushwacking, biking with Cathy, Canasta, board games with the kids, and planning epic week-long family camping trips. Ken had a keen sense of adventure and direction, a dislike for shoes, and no sense of an 8-year old’s ability to carry a 50-pound camping backpack.
He loved the holidays; especially Christmas. No tree was ever too big to fit in the living room and there was no such thing as too many decorations. He took his job as the ‘official present distributor’ very seriously, often skipping a kid if they were talking too much. Christmas was a week-long affair at the Land household. Ken looked forward to his extended Zeglen family Boxing day and game day celebrations, during which he would confidently count cards in black-ball and occasionally win at Monopoly. When he wasn’t playing games, he could be found playfully teasing his nieces and nephews or relaxing in the hot tub with a beer.
Ken built a beautiful life with Cathy, that was sadly cut short by a rapidly progressing illness. He drove through this part of his life like he drove a car, with reckless impatience and speed. We are devastated by the fact that our compass will not be able to join us on our next great adventure.
Special thanks to Dr. Cenkowksi, Dr. Kim, and the interdisciplinary team at the Acute Stroke Unit at HSC, your compassionate care will not be forgotten.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Riverview Community Centre in his memory.
A celebration of life will be held from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. on Friday, October 17, 2025, at Riverview Community Centre located at 90 Ashland Avenue. Sweatpant casual.
“The tall grass waves
A farewell to the day
The wind moans sweet and low
A heron tucks
His head in his wing
The fish in the lake float along
The sun sinks from sight
Away, but never gone—-
All o'er the world
As it turns and it turns
The stars twinkle off and on
And we come and go
Away, but never gone”

I had the great honour to be one of Uncle Ken's nephews, for which I consider myself to be eternally lucky. I have so many good memories of times with him and of the lessons he taught by the way that he lived his life. I wanted to share three of them that still stand out as clear in my memory as the day that they happened.
- How to eat hot pizza: Uncle Ken made sure all of his nieces and nephews knew the most important real world skills. This included but was not limited to how to eat pizza without ever touching it with your hands.
- Size is irrelevant: I was a small and not particularly coordinated child. Uncle Ken taught me that for everything from athletics to portages that mattered far less than the attitude you bring to what you're doing, and how many times you are willing to get back up. Also, how much oatmeal you were willing to eat.
- There is no such thing as an insurmountable obstacle: Uncle Ken appeared, as if by magic, at our wedding reception nearly fifteen years ago. This was during the Garden Centre busy season on the May long weekend, in the Interlake, during an apocalyptic storm. A preacher had literally predicted that the day would be the Rapture and it rained sideways the entire day. Nevertheless, at some point during the reception he appeared, as if nothing could have prevented him from being there.
Thanks for being you Uncle Ken.

Ken was one of the first people I met when I moved to Riverview, 25 years ago. Just three doors down, Ken and Cathy were always such good neighbours. We saw their children grow up and leave home, and come back, one to be our next-door neighbour. Ken's influence on his family shows through two generations now. You did good Ken. You will be greatly missed.

I got to play soccer with and against Ken for many years with the Riverview Rowdies. Little did we know, last winter would be the last season we would race around to chase a ball with Ken. I'll miss our chats, and enjoying some festivities at Nicolino's after our games. Ken, we'll leave the corner slices for you. You'll be missed this season and in seasons to come.

I am deeply saddened by Ken’s passing. He has left a huge void, a great gentleman gone too soon.
I was fortunate and had the pleasure of knowing and working with Ken for several years. Even in the busiest times, he always had time for a kind word, warmth, support and great leadership. He led by example not only through results, but with empathy and respect for everyone. He always spoke proudly and with great love for his family.
Lives must go on without him but will never be the same. Love and condolences to his loved ones.
Love and fond memories Ken you will never be forgotten.
Evelyn

The very first time I met Ken, we were sitting side by side at a GCGC meeting in Vaughn. We chatted briefly for a minute or two and then the meeting started and our attention was shifted. Five or sizx minutes later, he tapped me on the shoulder and whispered, can I borrow your car, there is something important I forgot at the hotel. I handed over my keys and it was not until he left that I actually thought about what just happened. In a strange town, I just handed over keys to my entire life, to someone I knew for less than 10 minutes. 30 minutes later, Ken walked back into the meeting, calmly handed me my keys, and our day went on like nothing happened .... whew :) . Ken had a unique way of looking at the world, engender trust and of making you feel at home in his presence. I am grateful to have had the privledge of knowing him for so many years. I wish you and your family peace in the quiet moments - he has profundly made those around him better.

My deepest condolences to Cathy and the entire Land family. I only knew Ken as an employee at St.Mary's Nursery and Garden Center. I probably drove him a little crazy with all my questions over the years. At times I know it was frustrating for him but we managed to work it out. I really did learn a tremendous amount from him especially about trees and fertilizers. He had so much knowledge about trees and could do mental math faster than anyone I ever knew. At this time of year as we switch over to the Christmas season, he would always wait until I was at work to bring the heavy boxes down and put the other giftware items up. I loved watching him in the office, overhearing everything that went on up front in the store. Even when you thought he was not listening, he was. Sometimes, one of the stall would be telling a story, he would add a comment from behind his office door. I loved his sense of humour, his great wit, his arguing with Carla, his ability to move mountains to transform St.. Mary's into a Christmas haven. He was so fit, strong and agile. He would be up on ladders or climbing the rafters with speed and agility. I will mill his quiet consistent presence and the popcorn he always shared. Rest in Peace! Thanks for putting up with me and teaching me so much. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very challenging time.

Dear Ken,
You sure know how to be family. I understand that it was your time to leave us. But it is my least favourite thing you have ever done.
Some of my favourite things you have done include
Your love for Cathy.
Your co-creation of your beautiful family.
Your being a deeply involved, irascible, loving father.
Your being a deeply involved, non irascible, loving grandfather.
Your being your witty, clever, fun, crazy, stubborn, quiet, strong self.
Your being such a big, laughter filled part of our lives.
Blackball will never be the same.
Love You, Ag💞
Thankyou for your time with us.
