JOAN MARGARET LANG

(neé PRESTON)

June 20, 1950 - January 9, 2022

With great sadness, Joan’s family announce that she passed away on January 9, 2022, at the Kildonan Personal Care Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba; she was 71.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Wayne; brother and sister-in-law Ken and Shirley Preston; nephew Tim Preston and his wife Jody, niece Marnie Branfireun; cousins Alice Mae, Wally, John and their families in Ontario, cousins Diane, Doug, Doreen and Jeff, Eileen and their families in the extended Delaney clan, and cousins Barry and Barbara Jean and their families in Winnipeg. Joan was predeceased by her mother Evelyn Morton and father Randy Preston, and uncles Alan and Bob Delaney and aunt Alice Clark and their spouses Gloria, Margaret and Neville, as well as uncle Alan Preston and his wife Dulcie.

Joan worked at General Electric, Fleming Pedlar and Robin Hood, but most recently worked as a purchaser at Misericordia Hospital, where she loved learning about medical technology and making sure the opthamological surgical team had what they needed to provide quality healthcare. She made good friends there including Diane Koziarski and her husband Larry. She was a valuable member of the hospital team and their appreciation of her contribution was recognized at her retirement there in 2008.

Joan made many friends through spending summers at Royal Lake, like longtime friends Terry and Pam Airth, and travelling throughout the Caribbean in the winter. Joan and Wayne were real partners in adventures and life, whether they were enjoying beach time in the sun, snowmobiling around Winnipeg and northwestern Ontario, or settled in at the lake. In their early time together they were avid roller skaters and water-skiers. More recently they spent winters in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where Joan could often be found contentedly reading or playing sudoku.

Wayne thanks Joan’s family for their support through this difficult time, and Parkview Place and Kildonan Care Centre staff for their kind and patient care of Joan. In accordance with Joan’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held. In lieu of flowers and gatherings, those wishing to honour Joan’s memory can make donations to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, or any organization of their choice supporting people living with dementia.

I remember our coffee breaks.  She always joined our table where we had lots  and lots of laughter.  I heard someone say that they wanted to join our table because we were having so much fun.

Wanda & I are very sorry to hear about Joan’s passing. We had many good times @ Royal Lake boating, sitting around a camp fire or swapping stories (occasionally sipping on a beverage). Our last get-together with Wayne & Joan was in PV where we met @ Cafe Roma then toured around old town.

I will miss my aunt Joan deeply. We talked so much about almost any subject. She was always supportive of me and was always happy to spend time with me. She had a silly and fun sense of humor and I loved seeing it come out! I will miss her deeply.
