NEIL LANYON

September 14, 1948 - July 16, 2021

With heavy hearts and immense sadness we announce that Neil Lanyon passed away on July 16, 2021, at St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 72.

Neil is predeceased by his parents Fredrick and Ewna; his brother Phil and sister Joan.

He will be lovingly remembered by his children Tracey and Jamie; his granddaughters Amber and Justine; his great granddaughter Lily; his brother Joe, as well as his extended family and friends.

Neil was born on September 14, 1948, to his parents Fredrick and Ewna in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was the third born child of four.

Neil grew up in Winnipeg. He lived with his parents and siblings on Pritchard Avenue and attended Florence Nightingale School and later Sisler High School. As a young man he was very athletic, he played baseball, basketball, and was a member of his school track team. As an adult his interest shifted to golf and bowling. He golfed in many local tournaments and was a member of a bowling league. He also played softball in a company league.

In his 50s Neil decided to start riding motorcycles. Weeknights were spent cruising around Winnipeg (he frequented the Corydon coffee shops), and on weekends he would explore Manitoba with his fellow riders and friends. He continued to ride well into his 60s.

Neil spent most of his working years in the printing industry, ultimately retiring from the Duha Group in 2016.

Neil’s family would like to thank the nurses in the dialysis unit at Health Sciences Center for all their care and hard work.

In keeping with Neil’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private service will be held. Neil’s family kindly requests that of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by watching the photo-biography above. So sorry to hear of Neil’s passing.  Although I only knew Neil briefly for the few months that I was in Winnipeg, I remember Neil fondly from my interaction with him, as someone who’s  always ready with a smile and his sense of dry humour.  I certainly remember Neil and his motorbike too!  RIP Neil.  My deepest condolences to the Lanyon family.

Neil was a wealth of knowledge in so many areas printing, home repair and renos, shooting stick and the list goes on!  Neil was always generous with his time and support though he loved to hide his kind nature under his gruff and  grumpy persona! I am honored to have worked with Neil until his retirement and continued to keep in contact. I had the privilege of  accompanying Neil on a trip out to Morden Manitoba to pick up his first motorcycle a Honda V45 Magna. I will always have that memory of watching a grown man turn into an excited little boy, you couldn't wipe that smile off of his face!! Condolences to the family he will be dearly missed!

Very sorry to hear of Neils passing.  Neil was a member in good standing of our motorcycle and coffee clique on Corydon Ave where I met him many years ago. A genuinely nice guy who will be missed in many circles.   My condolences to all his family and friends....  Thank you to whoever put the video together, many facets of Neil that I didn't know about, and appreciate seeing...

What a beautiful video for a tribute to Neil.  We knew Neil from the Wednesday night bowling night at the Academy Bowling lanes.  It was such a fun time, especially when he introduced us to Pat & Keith and we fondly remember some pretty fun poker nights.  He and his brother, Phil, bowled together for a couple of years, and together they were quite a pair, teasing, cajoling and giving bowling pointers.  Those are our memories of that special time.  Our condolences to the family, he was a great guy and will be missed!

I had the pleasure of meeting Neil and working with him 20 + years ago.  As a new young enthusiastic employee at The Duha Group Neil was a wise veteran who understood the nuances and uniqueness of estimating, often helping me as I began to learn more myself.  There are so many times where he would simply teach, and if you were willing to listen, you would receive great advice and knowledge.  I will always remember Neil as an individual who took time out to help you learn and question and inquire.  My condolences to his family.

My condolences to all who knew Neil. I knew Neil from our year in Graphic Arts at MIAA in '68, the year it opened (which later became part of Red River CC). I dropped in in 2018 on it's 50th to have a look around and was happy to see his picture on the wall, a memento of when images were being taken for pamphlets we were making to promote the course.  He lives on in many ways.

My deepest sympathies to the family of Neil Lanyon. By way of introduction my name is Denis and I lived across the street from Neil, He was my “Best Friend” as we grew up. There were three of us the other was Trevor Sissons who also lived a few doors down from Neil. Unfortunately we moved in 1961 out of the City. I have looked for decades to find these two great individuals. Neil was never afraid of anything, We would build forts from left over Christmas trees, then go and pick fights with others then run into our fort for protection!! My wish would have been to reconnect with him, as I too rode starting in my 50’s. We are the same age. Rest In Peace my dear friend. Now I know where you are.
