Betty Larkin

ELIZABETH HUGHES LARKIN
“BETTY”
April 28, 1946 – August 24, 2026
It is with profound sadness and hearts full of memories that we announce the passing of Elizabeth “Betty” Hughes Larkin on August 24, 2026.
Betty was predeceased by her beloved grandmother, affectionately known as Bessie Lala; her parents, Arthur and Margaret Millard; and her sister, Anne Didur.
Left to mourn and celebrate her life are her loving husband of 56 years, Ray Larkin; her son, Daniel Larkin; her daughter, Marni Larkin (Lyle Misura); and her sister Margaret Banasiak.
To know Betty was to know when she had entered a room. She was the life of the party, loved a good time, laughed loudly, and lived life very much on her own terms. She was also ferociously protective of those she loved. If you were one of Betty’s people, you never had to wonder whether she had your back.
In her younger years, Betty loved to travel—that is, until the family trip to Expo 86 in British Columbia convinced her that airplanes were no longer for her. From then on, adventures were preferably undertaken with both feet firmly on the ground.
Some of her happiest times were spent at the lake. Summer officially began on the last day of school, when the family headed to Matlock, and did not end until the night before school started again. Betty became part of the fabric of the Matlock community, involved in everything and hosting more card nights than anyone could count. There was always conversation, laughter and, of course, Betty’s opinion on whatever was being discussed.
Her enormous heart extended to animals. Over her years with Ray, their family included more than 14 dogs, five cats and two very fortunate rabbits whom Betty rescued from a much less appealing fate involving a stew pot. There always seemed to be room for one more.
Life was not always easy, but Betty’s faith and love for her family carried her through. Her 56 years with Ray were filled with family, summers at the lake, countless animals, difficult times weathered together, and many wonderful memories.
In the end, Betty was granted what she had always wished for. She left this world quickly and peacefully, before the loves of her life, spared the heartbreak of ever having to say goodbye to them first.
Betty leaves behind a lifetime of stories—of Matlock summers, card games, beloved animals, laughter, fierce opinions, unwavering loyalty and a family who always knew how deeply they were loved.
She was strong, funny, stubborn, fiercely loyal and unmistakably Betty.
There will never be another Betty, and we will miss her beyond measure.

I am the one who has known Betty the longest since she was my older sister, born 3 years before me. I had the privilege of growing up with her and there are many stories that could be told about those years.
Betty had a real flare for wrapping gifts, specially Christmas gifts. Many people are not aware of the fact that she developed her knack for wrapping when she was quite young. My parents would hide our wrapped gifts in a cupboard so we wouldn't peek. Betty somehow always found out where the hiding spot was. When nobody was around, she would sneak into that cupboard, find the gifts with her name on them and ver carefully unwrap each one. After she saw what the giftvwas, she painstakingly rewrapped the gift so nobody would know and she became a master at doing that. When it came time to actually open the gifts, she was able to look surprised as she opened each one. One Christmas I caught her unwrapping and she convinced me to unwrap one myself. Then she took off and left me to rewrap myself. Lacking her talent, I made a mess of it, got caught and she played miss innocence.
In later years her wrapping became works of art!
Many other stories of our childhood bring smiles to me and cherished memories to my mind.
Betty, Ann and I had very different personalities, but we all shared a sense of loyalty to family, love of family, love of all creatures and respect for others who deserved it. These values were instilled in us by our Scottish Grandma Alexander and our mother and father, Margaret and Art Millard.
Betty's life was a testament to what we grew up surrounded by. Marni, Daniel and Ray were her world, along with the relatives and friends lucky enough to be part of her life. Of course, all of the pets were loved dearly too.
Betty got her wish to pass before anyone one else in her immediate family. Life came full circle- she entered the world in St. Boniface Hospital and she left her earthly life in St. Boniface Hospital.
Her passing was a shock and I will miss hearing her voice when I call. I know her faith brought her peace of mind and she looked forward, at some point, to meet with family who went before her.
Betty,
I hope you are reading a good book, laughing with loved ones, free from pain and at peace.
See you later! Love, Margaret

I will remember Betty fondly. How many times was I around the kitchen at St. Martin in the fields with Betty large and in charge. In truth, For me, Betty was such a huge influence at the church and she made St. Martin's what it was. You will be missed.

I was extremely saddened to learn of the unexpected passing of my Godmother, and Aunt Betty.
Christmas was her favourite time of the year, and she went all out to host a big dinner with her family on Christmas Day. These were some of my fondest memories of her when I was younger. Marni took over the tradition in recent years, and did an excellent job continuing her mother's legacy. Of course Betty had final say on the menu, and we still had to endure a forced tasting her new "experimental" dish of the year, some of which were not keepers. She also always made sure to save a tray of her cabbage rolls to freeze and take back to Vancouver with me.
At any family gathering I was always made to feel like I was her favourite. She was protective and always on my side.
You will be missed Betty, but your memories and legacy will live on in our hearts forever.

My Aunt Betty passed away this week, and I’m struggling a little with the idea that someone who was such a force in this world simply isn’t here anymore.
Betty was loud, funny, strong, fiercely loving and wonderfully no-bullshit. She loved her people hard, and I was very lucky to be one of them.
She always welcomed me, always made a fuss of me and spoiled me absolutely rotten. Some people have a way of making you feel that they are genuinely delighted you’ve walked through their door. Aunt Betty was one of those people.
And then there was her food.
She made the best perogies I have ever eaten and the best chocolate brownies I have ever tasted. I’ve spent years trying to replicate both and have never managed it. Not even close. I know the ingredients. I understand how cooking works. And still, somehow, hers were just better.
I think I finally know what I was missing.
They were made by Aunt Betty.
Food is memory. A smell, a taste, a dish put down in front of you can take you back decades and put you at someone’s table again. So I suspect Betty will be with me for a very long time yet, because every perogy and every brownie I eat for the rest of my life will have to compete with hers.
None of them will win.
I will miss her laugh, her opinions, her enormous heart, her straight talking and, most of all, the way she loved us.
There really will never be another Betty.
I love you, Aunt Betty. And I hope wherever you are, the card game is good, the dogs are plentiful and nobody has had the bloody nerve to mess with your perogy recipe. ❤️

We were very saddened to hear Betty had passed away. We both spent the day remembering all the good times we had with Betty.....there were many. We were very fortunate to spend many days at their Matlock cottage. Playing cards, meeting neighbors,
laughing and having a drink or two. Dances at the Matlock community centre..highlight of the summer. We had fun with Betty at many socials, New Years eve dances and Rays work's Xmas parties.
If you knew Betty, you knew where you stood with her. Not one to mince words.
You will be missed, Betty. Our love and support are here for Danny, Ray, Marni and Lyle

You know or maybe not Betty and myself did part ways in a sense with her being devout and me not so much.
If anyone in this world made a difference in any faith I might have it was she. From her Christmas card messages to us and her openness of faith and how she cared it truly made it to our hearts every time.
So many times I would tell her to put her words pen to paper. From moments she would document her days surrounded by her loved ones, her dog/pet tales. So many over the years, the best ever!!☺️☺️. Every message without fail would give me reason to smile or leave me laughing. Betty’s gift with the written word unsurpassed.
I hope maybe she did document her days as she shared with me. Such a legacy that would be.
We adored Betty and I will cherish her memory and miss her for all my remaining days.
She was our treasure.☺️☺️

We will miss Betty very much. Stacey and I were so fortunate to have her over at Hudson's birthday dinner in July. It was the last time I saw her but she left me being thankful that I knew her. Whenever I saw her, her love for life and her love for those around her was evident. .
