KATICA LAZIC

(née FRKOVIC)

December 4, 1940 – September 5, 2024

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that our family announces the sudden passing of our beloved mom, sister, grandmother, and wife, Katica Lazic, on Thursday, September 5, 2024.

Katica leaves behind her devoted husband of 62 years, Milos, and her loving children: Linda (Joey), Miro (Kim), and George (Denise). She will be deeply missed by her cherished granddaughters, Alexa (Blaise), Jordyn (Jordan), and Erin. Katica is also survived by her siblings in Croatia: Jure, Ana, Luka (Marica), and Ruza (Nikola), along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family members in Croatia and Serbia.

Katica was born on December 4, 1940, in Licki-Novi Gospic, Yugoslavia, to Milan and Marica Frkovic. In 1962, she married the love of her life, Milos, and the couple moved from Gospic to Ljubac Dalmatia, where they both taught at the local elementary school for five years. In 1968, they embarked on a new journey, immigrating to Canada with their two children, Linda and Miro. In 1969, they welcomed their son, George, completing their family. Katica worked as a photo developer at Winnipeg Photo for 30 years until her retirement.

Mom’s life was devoted to her family. She was a pillar of strength, a dedicated wife, a loving mother, and a proud grandmother. Her courage, wisdom, and selflessness touched all who knew her. Her warm hugs and radiant smile will be forever remembered, as will her unending support and compassionate nature.

Mom’s grandchildren were the light of her life. She adored cheering them on in their various activities, listening to their stories, and watching their creative performances. Her love for them was boundless, and she cherished every moment spent with them.

Known for her incredible cooking, Mamma’s kitchen was always filled with the delicious aromas of family favorites like sarma, knedle, pita od sira, blueberry cake, Croatian/Serbian Christmas cookies, ushtipke and of course palicinke. No matter the occasion, she had a meal prepared and ready to share. In her free time, she enjoyed watching tennis, football (soccer), and her favorite game show, Jeopardy, where she tested her knowledge daily.

Mom’s curiosity and love of learning kept her connected with the world. She stayed well-informed on global events and mastered technology, using her iPad to Facetime with her siblings back home in Croatia.

Mom’s passing leaves a deep void in the hearts of everyone who knew her. Her memory will live on in the countless lives she touched with her love, laughter, and kindness. Though she is no longer with us, her spirit will remain, and she will be forever cherished and missed.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Grace Hospital for their care and compassion.

A private service and interment of ashes will take place at a future date.

To Milos Lazic, Linda, Miro, George and their families.

Our families have known each other for over 50 years. Losing a wife, mother, and grandmother leaves a big void in the family.

I will share some of our memories here. . .

Katica & Milos have been very dear friends of ours for many years, Katica and I use to go shopping together regularly, also worked together, met up for walks around the lake when we both lived in the area.

She always had something delicious baked to go with coffee, recently had Palacinke ready for our visit. Years ago she taught me how to make the pita dough from scratch, and it never fails. She was a very good teacher.

For several years we were involved with the Canadian-Yugoslavian Club, and shared many good times participating. Katica & Milos are amazing dancers, and a pleasure to watch and admilre. We also enjoyed fun times playing card games on weekends with our friends group. Later dining out together, mostly at the Red Lobster. Sometimes take out and shared on their lovely deck. Milos made the turkish coffee, and he makes the best. Recently showed me how to make it. So many fond memories . . never forgotten.

Our deepest condolences to you Milos, and your family

To Milos and the Lazic family

We have many pleasant memories of Kathy and Milos being a part of our small organization. Milos you were a key figure in that and Katica was a good supporter and encourager as we organized the socials in the Slovenian Church Hall. And as the song says "Those were the days my friend".

Our sincere condolences

To my beautiful extended family , I'm so very sorry for such a great loss . Katica was like my 2nd mom and Milos my dad . Their opens arms and hospitality were second to none !

Katica was always so interested in your day to day life and was the best listener! Her cooking not only tasted fabulous but it warmed your soul . It was the best table to sit at and be surrounded by so much love and laughter ! I was honored to always have a seat at their family table and my family loved her just as much .

Thank you Katica for all your love and support and nourishment for the past 40 yrs .
