GERALD “GERRY” STEPHEN LEGERE
September 2, 1948 - May 5, 2025
With sorrow, but with relief at the end of suffering, we announce the passing of Gerald Stephen Legere.
Gerry was born in Amherst, Nova Scotia but spent his childhood and early adult years in Toronto, then was a resident of Halton Region in southern Ontario, and finally Winnipeg as of September 2015.
He leaves behind his spouse of 45 years, Sharon Twilley; and his daughters, Karen (Andrew) Hughes and Christine Legere; as well as brothers, Myles (Pat), Bill, and Richard (Esther); and his nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Theresa (Arsenault) Legere; and his sister and brother-in-law Valerie and Blair Gallant. He is warmly remembered as a brother by Sharon’s family members in Manitoba (Carol and John Morgan, Bev Bryce, Diane and Brian Magill, John and Lorna Twilley, Lauraine Twilley and Gord Longbottom).
Gerry spent virtually all his working life with Canada Post, moving through various positions in the corporate post offices that have now disappeared, and finally continuing in a management position in retail support as mail services moved to pharmacies and other sites, finally retiring in 2008.
Gerry’s great passion was photography, which he combined with birding. His largest collection of photos was probably generated during a 2005 trip to Kenya and Tanzania, but various excursions in Canada, winter holidays in warm spots, and a flight to Churchill in October 2023 produced many great shots. Favourite subjects were abandoned buildings, wildlife, and landscapes. He was a dedicated member of the Manitoba Camera Club and was very proud of the awards he earned over the years. He was happy to share his skills in photo editing with others through the club. Road trips with club members or with his brother-in-law John Morgan were a great joy to him.
He had seventy-five years of unimpaired health and vigour for which we are thankful. The last year’s battle with cancer was a hard journey. We thank the medical and nursing staff of St. Boniface Hospital and CancerCare Manitoba, Victoria General Hospital, and finally Riverview Health Centre. The nurses, health care aides and physicians at Riverview made his last days as comfortable as possible and were unmatched in their support of family as well.
Those who wish to make a gesture of remembrance are encouraged to donate to their favourite charity in his memory.
There has been no funeral but there will be a gathering for family and friends to celebrate his life, at a date to be announced.
Gerry’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Gerry was a fun-loving person who took people at face value. He was always eager to talk about his photography and the places he'd been. Once, on Facebook he posted a gorgeous shot of sunflowers, which I loved. I jokingly said "I would like that as a 16x20 print please. A week later it arrived via Canada Post! Thank you also for working so hard to scan hundreds of negatives and photos from our family history.
You were a sunny addition to our family, and are very much missed.

Gerry was a loving father to Christine. She was often his side-kick on his frequent photo excursions. They loved going for brunch on Saturday and were regulars at the Jolly Mug restaurant. We will all miss Gerry but am glad he is no longer suffering.

Gerry was such a fun person to be with. At every family get together, on various trips, photo and birding expeditions Gerry shared many laughs and even more photos. A patient and wonderful teacher, he loved helping people learn the art of photography and editing.
It's so hard to believe we will not be able to be with Gerry in person any more. He will be in our hearts forever. Gerry got SO excited when we found an old barn, a beautiful prairie wildflower or a Snowy Owl. His enthusiasm knew no limits. Walking half a mile in -35° with 3 feet of snow to shoot an abandoned grain elevator was as easy for him as spending an hour photograph ing a Prairie Lily on warm summer day. We miss your smile, your laugh and your enthusiasm Gerry. I know our next family gathering or photo shoot with you will be something else. Keep your batteries charged and lens cap off Gerry. I can't wait for our next shoot!!
Love
John

Gerry was one of my closest friends in the Club. He always had a smile wnd a good word for everyone. It pained me so muchto hear of his suffering that I could not bear to see him during that period. I will truly miss him and remember the fun times we shared.

We will miss Gerry deeply at the Manitoba Camera Club meetings.
He was more than a fellow member — he was my mentor and a generous teacher who shared so much of his knowledge, especially when it came to editing.
The photo of him in front of the barn was taken during one of our very first trips to abandoned Manitoba places. I’ll always remember that day — the laughter, the learning, and the joy of exploring old buildings together. It was pure fun and adventure. We

Gerry was a very active member of the Manitoba Camera Club. He served as its treasurer for several years. Gerry was also one of the MCC's top photographers, winning many monthly competition awards. He is missed for sharing his exceptional photo editing skills. I have posted images of Gerry at the last MCC windup that he was able to attend.
