Sandy Leray
SANDRA "SANDY" LEE LERAY
October 12, 1960 - March 24, 2021
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Sandra Leray on March 24, 2021 while at home surrounded by her family after a short battle with cancer at the age of 60 years.
Sandy is survived by her best friend, soulmate, and husband Norm; children, Michelle (Jeff) Stokotelny, Tyler (Meghann), and Shannon Lee; grandchildren, Alyssa, Elizabeth, Aaron, and Mikaela; mother Carol Pease; siblings, Ken (Ruth), Jackie (Richard), Lawrence, Janice (Eric), Tim (Maggie), Penny (Tony), Tom, Don (Colleen) as well as many nieces & nephews and cousins.
Sandy is predeceased by brother Butch, and Doug Pease (Pops).
Sandy met Norm in high school, grade 10 English, September 1975. Sandy and Norm started dating July 1976 and were never apart from that time on. Married in January 1980, a Winnipeg wedding at minus 27 Celsius.
Dedicated Mother, when we decided to raise our family, Sandy committed to staying home with Michelle, Tyler, and Shannon. She made sure they always had what they needed, whether it was an ear to listen to them, caring advice to help them, or just being there to make them feel safe. She made every day special in our home.
Sandy was an avid bingo player who enjoyed going to bingo with Grandma Hughes in the early years, then with her bingo friends and with her kids later on. Sandy could always count on a six pack of bingo dabbers from the kids on her birthday & Christmas to keep in her bingo purse.
Sandy was very instrumental in setting up our first warehouse on Notre Dame avenue in the late 90’s. She worked hard and never complained, if it needed to be done, she was on it. Sandy was always available to help whether it was at the warehouse or an errand for one of the kids.
In 2005, Sandy stepped up again and was key with helping us build our hangar at Lyncrest Airport. We definitely required her common-sense thinking. Sandy always had a way of looking at what seemed to be enormous issues and simplifying the problems which made all our lives a lot easier. Sandy made the family days at the hangar special with her added touches, there was always wafer cookies to be had. Sandy enjoyed the annual Canada Day family time at the hangar, she definitely enjoyed going up for a flight and seeing everyone else enjoy their opportunity to get their turn to go up for a flight. In 2018 she was amazed when she had her first flight with Tyler after obtaining his pilot license. Aviation had become a big part of the Leray family as our Granddaughters also are enjoying the flying aspect of aviation, maybe future pilots.
After raising our three kids, Sandy re-entered the workforce working for Safeway, Sobeys, and finally Red River Co-op. Sandy really enjoyed working with the Red River Co-op team the last few years. She loved going in every day, working with her co-workers and making sandwiches for her regular Red River Co-op customers.
Sandy loved spending time with her granddaughters, teaching them to knit and crochet. Sandy enjoyed the movie nights (Harry Potter) and time at the hangar with Alyssa and Elizabeth. Sandy cherished the conversations she would have with Alyssa and Elizabeth.
Sandy enjoyed trips to Las Vegas over the last 25 years, one of her favorite places. Sandy was fortunate to make many trips to many destinations. Her all time favorite by far was the Disneyland trip with our kids and grandchildren, anyone who had talked with Sandy in the last two years would have had the pleasure of her telling them about the Disneyland trip.
We would like to give thanks to the HSC and Cancer Care Manitoba doctors, nurses, and staff. Thanks to the Palliative Care nurses. A special thank you to Dr. D. Caners, so much appreciated.
Cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held. Sandys family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by watching the photo-biography above.
