CHARLES LEUNG

May 17, 1935 - February 4, 2018

Charlie led a wonderfully long life, one filled with endless love, devotion, smiles and no complaints. He lived life always putting others before himself and he never wanted to be a burden for anyone – “I’m good!” was his favourite response. Although he isn’t here to tell us that anymore, we know that he is.

His life began in Swan River, MB with his loving parents, Choy and Winnie Leung, his brothers, Mike and Pete, and sisters, Anne, Laura, Josie, and Ruth. Growing up in a small town, he learned to value family and friends; many of these relationships lasted his entire life. Some of his special memories were playing hockey, cruising on his motorcycle, and driving in his convertible.

Charlie moved to Winnipeg to continue working with Manitoba Hydro, a career that spanned 40 years. There he met his loving wife of 54 years, Pat, where he swept her off her feet with his amazing Chinese cooking skills and started his family. His lifelong passion for hockey led him to coaching his sons’ teams for many years and sitting on the board of the St. Vital Victorias. His adventurous side had him packing up his family every summer for a roadtrip. Memorable vacations included: Mount Rushmore, Banff, Niagara Falls, Grand Ole Opry, Disney World and of course, a visit to the Hockey Hall of Fame. He also LOVED the frequent trips to Grand Forks for some shopping. When it came time for him to retire, he loved to go to Florida with Pat, but nothing put a bigger smile on his face and a tear on his cheek than when he attended his granddaughters’ baseball games, band concerts, volleyball tournaments and dance recitals.

Charlie was predeceased by his parents and all his siblings. Although they were gone before him, he never forgot about the endless memories they had together. He leaves behind his wife and soulmate, Pat, his two sons and daughters-in-law that he was and will always be so proud of, Brad (Tanis) and Brent (Kelly), his cherished granddaughters, Hannah, Emma, and Linnea, and Tanis’ son Taylor. He will be missed by many.

So many people cared for Charlie in the past few years when his health started to deteriorate. Pat really appreciates all the love and support given to Charlie and her by her sister Brenda, cousin Wendy and friend Helen. The family would also like to thank the staff at Meadowood Manor who made Charlie feel not only loved, but comfortable this past year and a half – we will forever be grateful for your thoughtfulness and compassion.

A funeral service for Charlie will be held at Beautiful Saviour Lutheran Church, 1541 St. Mary’s Road on Saturday, February 10, 2018 beginning at 1:00 p.m. In honour of Charlie’s “sweet tooth”, the family invites all for refreshments and dessert following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Charlie’s memory can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or CancerCare Manitoba.

“Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing."

Keep smiling down on us Charlie.
