ALLAN CHARLES LEWIS

With heavy hearts, we announce the sudden passing of our dad, Al on January 30, 2023, in the Grace General Hospital at the age of 72 years.

He is survived by his children, Chrissy (Randy), Rob (Trinh); fiancé Jennifer Clarke; granddaughters, Avery and Meredith; brother Jim; sisters, Sylvia Van Dine and Jenny Murphy (Mel); as well as many nieces and nephews and extended family. He was predeceased by his parents, Ashford and Edith Lewis; wife Betty-Anne Lewis; sister Brenda; and brother Gordon.

Al grew up around the country as his family tended to move about. He spent time in Alberta, Saskatchewan, BC, and Manitoba. This need to move never left dad and he had many homes during his lifetime.  Dad’s childhood was punctuated with great times growing up with 5 siblings, loving, fighting, and caring for each other as well as hard times as their parents tried to deal with their own struggles. 

There were two times in his life where Al settled down.  Once during his marriage to mom, Fran Lewis when they raised us kids on the small farm in Grunthal, MB.  We enjoyed many moments during this time where dad built a barn and raised animals such as horses, calves, pigs, and chickens. Although their marriage did not survive mom and dad ended as friends and Al always had a soft spot in his heart for Fran.

Dad had many jobs in his life.  Everything from forest fire fighter to truck driver, from factory worker at a milk plant to denturist.  Eventually dad had to call it quits as his disability made it difficult for him to work.

In 1989 dad met and married Betty-Anne.  Together they enjoyed many things from fishing to traveling to raising Himalayan cats. Dad and Betty-Anne enjoyed a wonderful road trip to the east coast where they saw New York and Niagara Falls in the autumn.  They also traveled to the west coast, on Via rail, to visit Al’s mother and siblings.  The second time dad settled down in one place was when he and Betty-Anne bought their home in Hamiota, MB.  They enjoyed many years in this small town.  Dad developed a green thumb here and enjoyed gardening very much.

In 2008 dad enjoyed a trip of a lifetime where he went to the Ukraine. It was quite an adventure.

Towards his later years dad moved back to Winnipeg to be closer to his family.  Here he enjoyed watching his granddaughter Meredith grow up as well as spending time with his older brother Jim.

Always the ladies man it wasn’t long before dad met another woman, Jennifer.  Dad and Jennifer were engaged and spoke to each other almost everyday via facetime.  He was looking forward to being together with her in person.  His life was enhanced by her love during his final years.

A celebration of Al's life will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, April 6, 2023 at 603 Wellington Crescent at Academy Road (Unitarian Facility).

In lieu of flowers, please consider making contributions in Al’s memory to the Spinal Cord Research Centre at U of M.
