DR. YUESHU LI

July 3, 1954 – June 4, 2026

Dr. Yueshu Li, 71, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Hebei, China, to Jie Li and Zhenjiang Li (both predeceased), Yueshu was the eldest of four children, raised in a family that valued honesty, education, and scientific inquiry. His father, an equine scientist who helped develop modern horse breeds in China, instilled in him a deep appreciation for learning and discovery. That early influence sparked a lifelong passion for science and knowledge, shaping both his career and the character for which he would be remembered.

Yueshu earned a Ph.D. in Plant Physiology and Ecology from the University of Saskatchewan and went on to build a distinguished career in the malting industry. Over more than three decades, he became a respected leader in his field, ultimately serving as Director of Malting and Brewing Operations at the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre in Winnipeg. Through his expertise, innovation, and dedication, he helped advance the industry while mentoring and supporting generations of professionals.

In 1980, he married the love of his life, Lili Lei, in Tongliao, China. Together they built a life grounded in love, perseverance, and devotion to family. As a husband and father, Yueshu worked tirelessly to create opportunities for those he loved. He was always the first to lend a helping hand, never seeking recognition and never speaking ill of others. His kindness, patience, humility, and generosity touched everyone who knew him, and he took joy in helping others succeed.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Yueshu was deeply committed to his community. For twelve years, he served as President of the Manitoba Academy of Chinese Studies, championing Chinese language education and cultural preservation. Through his leadership, he helped strengthen connections between Winnipeg's Chinese community and the broader city. His quiet generosity and unwavering dedication left a lasting impact on countless students, families, and fellow community members.

Yueshu also found happiness in life's simple pleasures. He loved traveling the world with Lili, caring for his collection of orchids, and spending time in his garage repairing, building, and tinkering. If something was broken or a problem needed solving, family and friends knew they could count on him to find a thoughtful and creative solution.

Yueshu is lovingly survived by his wife of forty-six years, Lili Lei; his children, Leilei (Victor Cui), Jillian (Teo Emric), and Alexander, as well as grandsons, Cosmo and Atticus. He took great pride in his children's accomplishments and was especially proud to see Alexander continue the family's scientific tradition, pursuing a Ph.D. in Chemistry Nanotechnology after completing a Master's degree at the University of Waterloo. He is also survived by his sister, two younger brothers, and many extended family members, friends, colleagues, students, and community members whose lives were enriched by his presence.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, scientist, mentor, community leader, and beloved friend. Yueshu lived a life defined by integrity, compassion, and service to others. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the community he strengthened, and the many lives he touched through his wisdom, generosity, and determination. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Winnipeg Foundation in support of the Manitoba Academy of Chinese Studies, in memory of Dr. Yueshu Li.

I worked with Yueshu at both CMBTC and the CWB. A great person with whom to work and much respected by the many international clients with whom he had contact.

Several of us came from the same university and had the same thesis advisor in China with Yueshu. We called him "Big Brother Li " 李大哥 when we were graduate students together in Canada because of his wisdom and generosity.

I sometimes thought that I would close my eyes with satisfaction if my friends cry for me when I die. I cried for you, 李大哥.

I read obituaries everyday because I enjoy the stories and appreciate the journeys. This is by far, the sincerest story I've read. Dr. LI left a strong legacy and the authors of this passage are proof of that. My condolences to all who loved him.
