EDUARD (ED) LOCK

September 17, 1931 - December 9, 2021

With sorrow, we announce that our dad Ed Lock passed away on December 9, 2021 in Ste. Anne, MB, at the age of 90.

Ed is survived by his sons, Doug (Tracey) and Bradley; daughter Val (Dean); grandchildren, Corbin (Kaitlyn), Kelsey (Bekah), Millie and Teddi, and Courtney (Ryan) and Brandon; great-grandchildren Charlie, Hadley, Norra, Harlow, and Madden.

Ed was born in the German village of Marienhof in Ukraine, and grew up between his grandmother’s farm in Crimea and mother’s home in Bavaria in Germany. He fondly shared memories of his time in Crimea, and dreamed of bringing Brad on a vacation to Ukraine.

After the War ended, Ed was looking for opportunities and emigrated to Canada before the age of 20. His journey by boat brought him to Montreal, and then he traveled by train to the Riverton area which reminded him of his farm life in Crimea. He was hired on as a farmhand and taught himself flawless English, which opened more opportunities for him. Ed was mechanically inclined and used his skills fixing and restoring aircraft in northern fishing camps and then finally settled in Winnipeg. He became a cab driver to learn his way around the city. Learning was important to Ed, and despite not having the opportunity to complete grade school because of the War, he earned his papers as a Boiler Engineer and Mechanical Engineer. He was a mechanical engineer at Holy Family Nursing Home and then made a lifelong career as an airplane engine mechanic with Standard Aero at the Test Stand.

Ed was an only child and so highly valued his family life in Charleswood, raising two sons and a daughter. He was devoted to his youngest son Brad, and after retiring, single-handedly built his home near Ste. Anne to enjoy their life in the country. Together, they enjoyed boating and fishing excursions at Falcon Lake and drove numerous times across the prairies to visit Doug and his family in BC.

A Celebration of Life will be planned in 2022. In the meantime, Ed’s family kindly requests that his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos and/or sharing your own memories and stories using the comment section on this page.

Rest peacefully, Dad, you had a long, well-lived life.
