Alma Longstaff

ALMA LONGSTAFF
January 1, 1933 - August 24, 2025
Beloved wife, devoted mother, cherished sister, aunt, and friend.
Alma is survived by Sid, her husband of seventy-one years; her daughters Jill and Kim (Neil); brothers-in-law John and Bill; nieces and nephews; and longtime friend Joyce (and family). She was predeceased by her parents, Mary and Cecil Bryant; brothers Merton, Lloyd, and Bert; and son-in-law Dave.
Alma was born on the family farm near Carlyle, Saskatchewan, on New Year's Day, 1933. Upon leaving high school, she was a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse on the prairie. Alma moved to Winnipeg to go to secretarial school in the early 1950s. It was here that she met her husband, Sidney, on a blind date at an air force dance. They married in 1954 and made their home in the suburb of Windsor Park. Alma worked as a typing instructor at both Success College and Churchill High School. She put her career on hold to be home while her girls were little. In the late seventies she began a new career as a secretary, working at Thadeus Ltd. and later Schneider’s, where she was employed until her retirement.
Alma appreciated life’s simple pleasures like riding her bike, picking blueberries at the lake, and baking the most delicious pies. She was her happiest when surrounded by family and friends. The heart of our family, she hosted and made holiday gatherings special. Alma was a talented lady who could create just about anything. Be it knitting, sewing, quilting, or crocheting, she always had a project on the go. Alma loved watching her sports and was a Jets season ticket holder for several years. Always active, our busy bee played badminton, curled, gave line dancing a whirl, and enjoyed a good game of bridge in her retirement years.
Alma was the most genuine, thoughtful, and beautiful soul you could ever wish to meet. Her generosity, patience, and kind gestures touched the hearts of all those she met. To know her was to love her. She will be deeply missed, but oh, how lucky we were to have had her grace our lives.
A celebration of life will be held at a future date.
When tomorrow starts without me,
Don’t think we are far apart,
For every time you think of me,
I’m right there in your heart.
Alma’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Aunt Alma was such a kind, caring, generous and fun-loving person. I remember when I was young, that I was always excited whenever she and the family would come to Carlyle for a visit. Her pleasant demeanour and her laughter would light up the room. Then when our own kids came along, she was always delighted to see them, even if it was just for a short visit. She was always busy doing something, baseball, line dancing, watching hockey games ... that was an inspiration for me. As I grow older, I hope that I will find the same zest for life as she had. Aunt Alma, you will always be present through my memories of you and in my heart. We love you.

I worked with Sid for many years and what I remember was his warm, kind thoughts and comments he had of his wife Alma. May she rest in peace.

Alma was one of the sweetest, kindest souls I ever knew. Always a kind word of encouragement for those around her. I had the pleasure of working with her back in the 80's at J. M. Schneider. She will be missed by all. My condolences to the family.

Alma was my sister-in-law for over 70 years but much more a sister than a sister-in-law, truly a member of my family. She was someone I simply felt comfortable with, someone I could always talk to. She was a joy to know, and I will miss her.
