DOUGLAS IAN LOWDEN

July 13, 1939 - March 8, 2022

On Tuesday March 8, 2022, Douglas Ian Lowden age 82 peacefully passed away at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, predeceased by his loving wife of 48 years Ruth (née Ryan) in 2015, and his brother Larry in January 2022. He is survived by his brother Graeme (Joyce), sister Dale (Geoff), and nieces and nephews.

Doug was born in Sudbury, Ontario on July 13, 1939 and started his education at River School in Old Kildonan which is the present site of River Ridge II Retirement Residence. This was his last home and where he had many friends.

Doug got involved with Sports Cars and the automotive world soon after high school. He raced and rallied with the Winnipeg Sports Car Club in Manitoba, the Prairie Region and across Canada. He founded an automotive dealership, Doug Lowden Ltd. and was the Renault distributer in Winnipeg for many years.

Doug was very thoughtful of others and would always help when he could, he has left an empty spot in our hearts.

A special tribute to staff at River Ridge II for all the kindness and care Doug received in the past two years while River Ridge was home. Special thanks to Dr. Cameron Lowden for his many years of care of Doug and his wife Ruth.

A Remembrance come and go gathering will be held at the home of Doug's brother Graeme on Saturday the 26th of March, 2 pm to 4 pm. The address is 26033 PTH 44 in St. Clements, phone 204 757-7043 for directions. We ask that all be Covid Vaccinated.

Doug’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

Doug's family and friends,   I am so sorry to hear of Doug's passing.  I was very good friend of  Doug and Ruth.  I was a bridesmaid in their wedding,  Doug use to say imported from  the Ottawa Valley.   I also worked for Doug in his car dealership,  best boss ever.  I have great memories of  Doug and Ruth and miss them.   Doug was a super guy.  Blessings to all of you.  Darlene (Boyle) Peltier.

I was shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Cousin Doug, especially after the recent passing of his older brother, Larry. Doug was a great guy. I am sorry he had to contend with health issues in his last few years. We will all miss him. Doug Lake

Dear Graeme, Joyce and family.  We will miss Doug and his positive attitude.  We have fond memories of Doug making the best Caesars! Doug's devotion to Ruth was heartwarming.   It makes us smile thinking of Ruth and he being together again.  Love Corinne & Ron

My deepest condolences to his brother Graeme and family on the passing of Doug. I got to know Doug through Graeme (a former Sea Cadet and Naval Reserve friend) and managed to attend a number of sports car events watching both Doug and Graeme racing.  Doug was always a pleasant and interesting person to talk to.

My condolences to Graeme, family and friends upon hearing of Doug's passing. I got to know Doug through the Winnipeg Sports Car Club in 1969 and during the following years we would meet at club events and especially at the race track at Gimli. During one endurance race in the early 1970s Doug was on my tail for many laps in a BMW and eventually I let him pass, with the idea of re-passing when I got a chance. Unbeknownst to me, it was the second to last lap, so that was that! Good memories. Rudolf Koes, Winnipeg.

My parents and I enjoyed meeting him in the halls at RR2. He always greeted us and talked for a bit. Super friendly man.

I met Doug and Ruth when they were active in the Winnipeg sports car club. At that time Doug was one of the more senior members of the club and an active racer. Through his life, he always had a minute to stop and talk to people he knew. She always asked what was going on in the club, maintaining his interest in racing. Later in his life, he and Ruth moved into a seniors assisted-living building on St. Anne's, where my sister-in-law lived. I would quite often bump into him walking his dog. I was sorry to learn of roots passing, but Doug did carry on with his life. Now in Ruth are together in Heaven. I will always have fond memories of my interaction with Doug. He was always friendly and enjoyed a good conversation.
