EDYTHE LUCAS

July 30, 1959 – August 7, 2023

With broken hearts, we announce the sudden passing of Edythe on August 7, 2023, in St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 64.

Edythe is survived by her children David (Sula) and Claire (Geoff) and their father, Terry; grandchildren Metta and William; her parents Frieda and Edward Epp, sisters Deborah (Gerry), Susan (Rick), Cheryl (Gene) and their families; lifelong friend Val; and her furry companion, Sprinkles.

Edythe was born in Swan River but spent most of her life in Winnipeg. She graduated from Red River Collegiate and had a successful career with CancerCare for over 20 years.

Edythe enjoyed going to concerts, plays and movies. She also loved gardening, walking her dog through Bunns Creek, and going out with her family.

Recently, she moved to St. James to be closer to her daughter and grandson, while always looking forward to visits from her son and his family when they visit from the United States. She was a very talented artist, musician and avid animal lover. She was the definition of a lioness when it came to her family, a protector and loved fiercely until her last day.

"Hearts will never be practical until they can be made unbreakable."

- Wizard of Oz

By Edythe's wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Edythe's favourite animal shelters: Prairie Haven Animal Rescue, Manitoba Great Pyrenees Rescue, Winnipeg Pet Rescue or Winnipeg Humane Society.

The family would also like to thank the St. Boniface's Palliative Unit team for their care and kindness.

Dear David and Claire - Wishing you peace, comfort, courage and love at this time of sorrow. You just know me as someone who's always been in your Mom's life. Here is the beginning of our sisterhood. Your Mom and I met in grade seven and we had an instant connection. It was like we had the same soul. Although a lot alike but also different in many ways. We grew up together going through growing pains together, getting into trouble together and just always being there for each other. Then we were adults together busy being moms, going through adult growing pains and again always being there for each other. I remember many years ago your Mom saying to me how lucky we are to always have each other in our back pockets. Your Mom was one of a kind with so many special qualities. How blessed was I to have had her as a friend for a lifetime! Now, my pocket is empty and a piece of my heart is broken forever but I know heaven needed another angel. She will be forever missed. Sending kissed to Sprinkles. Lifelong friend Val

Claire & David & families.  I am so sorry for your loss.  I only just found out that Edythe had passed.  Your Mom was a lovely woman.  I worked with Edythe closely for many years in the Blood & Marrow Transplant Program.  We became good friends.  She was kind, thoughtful and intelligent.  She was a very proud Mother.  Over the years we lost connection due to job changes and had only in the last year reconnected.  We were planning on getting together in June or July so she could show off her new home.  Things got busy for me at work and we never got to have that lunch – much to my regret.  I hope you have lots of good memories of your Mom to celebrate and cherish as you move forward in life. Dear David, Claire and family, I was truly shocked to hear of Edythe's sudden passing. I am so very sad for you all. I worked closely with Edythe when she worked for the mobile breast cancer screening program (1998 +) and I have such great memories of that time together. Intelligent, organized with integrity and beautiful inside and out.  She spoke of you both often and with pride. My sincere condolences to you both and your families.
