BORIS VERNON LUHOWY

May 26, 1936 – June 7, 2025

It is with deep sadness we announce that, on June 7th, Boris Vernon Luhowy aged 89 of Oakview, Manitoba, passed away peacefully with family by his side. Boris was born on May 26th, 1936, in Gypsumville, Manitoba.

Boris was predeceased by his parents, Steve and Pearl Luhowy; his wives, Clara and Janice; sister Doreen; and brother Jerrold. Left to mourn are his stepchildren, Karen (Ron), Anne (Alan), and Guy; grandchildren, Melissa (Grant), Travis (Kyla), Courtney (Pascal), Tanis (John), Troy, and Katie (Ian); great grandchildren, Connor, Sadie, Carlie, Khloe, Sereya, Liam, Cooper, and Madeline; nieces and nephews, Jerrold (Michele), Tracey, and Steven; as well as many more family members and friends.

Boris grew up in Gypsumville, and Steep Rock, then Winnipeg when he started his 23-year law enforcement career in West ST Paul in 1968. He then moved over to Transcona’s K9 unit and eventually becoming part of the City of Winnipeg’s K9 unit in 1972 until his retirement in 1991. Boris’s love of dogs made it very easy to blend his home and work life with raising his service dogs, Mitch and Marco.

Boris liked to be active after his retirement and took on several different jobs that included Grey Goose bus driver, Postal carrier, and assisting at the Oakview transfer station once Janice and him moved to Lake Manitoba Narrows. One of Boris’s favourite routines was to drive around the Narrows in either his car or golf cart looking to see if anyone needed help with anything or just wanted to talk and this was done on multiple trips each day, as many that knew him would attest too. He truly enjoyed the local get togethers, fish fry’s, and family gatherings throughout the year.

A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 12th, at 10 Peter Stasiuk Drive Lake Manitoba Narrows.

Gone, but not forgotten.

Boris’ family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

How do you say goodbye to an old friend who has been in your lives for 30 years? Debbie & I first met Boris & his wife Jan when we started seasonal camping at The Narrows. What started with camper trailers morphed into buying lots, building homes & eventually retiring, living 2 lots away from them. During this time, Boris continued his daily routine of 'patrolling' the neighbourhood, ensuring 'all was safe.' He would stop into the neighbours to catch up on news and pat all the dogs & cats. Boris & Jan were equally as welcoming to visits from neighbours, and we spent many evenings on their deck during the nice weather. We could expect at least at least a visit daily from Boris - catching up on the daily news or just speculating. It was difficult to lose him but he is at peace now & pain-free. We miss him. Our condolences to Karen, Ron & Boris' family.

Rest in peace, old friend.

First, my sincere condolences to Boris's family on his passing. I first met Boris when I was 16 yrs. old and was a courtesy clerk at the newly opened Safeway at Mountain & McGregor in Winnipeg. Boris was the assistant manager of the store. We then crossed paths again after I had joined the WPS and he had joined the Old Kildonan PD. Later after total amalgamation we worked together in District 3. I have fond memories of working with him and I am saddened by his passing.
