LUKE MACKAY

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Luke Garnet MacKay, taken tragically by a motor vehicle collision. He was a beloved son of Carla and Gordon MacKay and brother of Blake MacKay.

Luke Garnet MacKay was born to Carla and Gordon MacKay on December 8, 1988. He grew up in Winnipeg with his younger brother, Blake MacKay. He was loved dearly by his grandparents Doris Davision and the late Muriel and Geroge Cummings; Aunts and Uncles Kathy MacKay, Janis and Norm Leong, Rod Davison, and the late Maureen MacKay and Don Kusyk; Cousins Shona and Meaghan Kusyk, Jessie, Carlyle and Khalicia Pettinger, Amber Dawn, Josh and Christian Davison; and sister-in-law Jenny MacKay.

Luke enjoyed camping, canoeing, fishing, boating, water polo, paintball and guitar in his youth. In particular, he would eagerly wait for summer to come so that he could enjoy his time out at the family cottage on Lee River. Luke was a strong swimmer, leading him to become a lifeguard and swim instructor. He was well-known for being remarkable with children, always able to make a child smile or laugh and could entertain them for hours. 

Luke attended Winnipeg Technical College and obtained his qualifications to eventually become a Journeyman Electrician. He was provided with an opportunity to work in Keeyask in Northern Manitoba over four years ago. Luke was a skilled electrical supervisor for BBE Hydro Constructors LP. He always took pride and enjoyment in his work and will be fondly remembered by his team members. Luke held an important role in the Emergency Response Team and was talented at rope rescues. A proud member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Luke will be missed by his peers and industry.

Luke had an interest in sailing and had been developing this skill during his last few years with the help of his coworkers. He and his father Gordon did a multi-day educational expedition on the BC coast in 2018.  He had aspirations of eventually moving out to the East Coast to take this up as a more permanent hobby and lifestyle.  He also loved to ride his motorcycle and travel, recently exploring Iceland and had plans to visit Scotland to learn more about his heritage.

Luke was tragically taken from his family, friends, and coworkers much too early in a motor vehicle accident. Since his passing, the abundance of kind words and memories shared by those who loved Luke have made his impact on his community even more apparent.

His family would like to thank the continued support of BBE, his coworkers and his numerous friends during this challenging time. In lieu of flowers, Luke would have appreciated donations being sent to the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba. He was passionate about fighting addiction and would be proud for this to be part of his legacy.

A memorial service was held at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10, 2019 in the St. Vital Park main flower gardens. Afterwards we gathered at 6:00 p.m. at the Fort Garry Community Centre, Hobson Site, 880 Oakenwald Ave to continue to share in memories as well as celebrate Luke's life. Light refreshments were provided.
