CHARLES (CHUCK) A. MACKELSON

January 13, 1954 - March 9, 2022

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Charles Mackelson at the Grace General Hospital on March 9, 2022 at the age of 68 years.

Chuck is predeceased by his parents Charles and Patricia Mackelson and ex-wife and mother of his children, Laura.

Chuck is survived by his children Jennifer (Kevin) and Jaime (Ryan); grandchildren Connor and Grace; brother Gary; and sisters, Darlene, Sandy (Gary), and Alice (Bryan). Even after separating, he continued to care for Teresa; her family, Doreen and Emile; Rick (Tracey), Randal (Stacey), Kirk (Natalie), and Dustin (Julie); and grandchildren Noah, Hayden, Chloe and Brady.

Chuck was a Journeyman Electrician, owned and operated his own renovation company for many years. He was a very hard-working man who instilled his strong work ethic in his children and grandchildren. He loved his girls immensely and prepared them to be independent women, who knew how to swing a hammer and change a tire. Some of his accomplishments were building his first house at 19 years old, designing and constructing the scoreboard for the Goldeyes stadium, and over the years renovating his and his children’s homes. In the past few years, his proudest moments were spent teaching his grandson Connor his “jack of all trades”.

Chuck was a fighter. He had a tragic workplace accident in October 2018 and broke his neck. He underwent major surgery in attempts to correct his spinal injury. Doctors said he would not walk again and would need to spend months in rehab to regain his strength. In January 2019, Chuck and his family had a trip booked to Mexico for his 65th birthday. Given his condition, doctors advised that he would likely not make the trip. Chuck did not give up and after one month of rehabilitation, he defied the odds. He was released from hospital, walking again and cleared to travel to Mexico.

Chuck loved to travel to Puerto Vallarta Mexico for one month every year and every summer spent a week camping in Detroit Lakes for the Country We Fest.  Chuck enjoyed spending summers at his “happy place” with family and life long friends Evelyn and Lou at Steeprock.

Chuck loved his family deeply and worked very hard to provide a wonderful life for them. He also loved his “baby girl” and furry companion Mia, who is now providing comfort to his family with his passing.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the ICU staff at Grace General Hospital for their compassion and wonderful care of Chuck.

As per Chuck’s wishes, a cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will be held in his honour for family and friends in the near future. In the meantime, Chuck's family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

Your wings were ready but our hearts were not.

We love you Papa.

❤Happy Birthday sweetheart.  My heart is with you always.  I’m at a loss not having you here and I wish I could have seen you last year on your birthday.  Not a moment goes by where you are not by my side and in my heart.  As promised, we will find eachother in heaven.

Merry Christmas Sweetheart.  The many Christmas memories of us decorating the tree and you going out of your way to be sure that all my little Christmas Trees were lit up outdoors are but a few of the moments we shared.  You asking me to Marry you Christmas Day will always be my most precious memory.  Mom, Dad, Noah, Hayden, and Chloe miss you dearly and Brady is having a difficult time understanding where Papa is, so right now I told him you’re the brightest star in the sky watching over him.  We love you every second of every day.  I will see you again my love.  Teresa

I'm so saddened to hear this news.  I met Chuck as the electrician I hired to do some work at my home.  I liked him right from the start and could tell he was honest, reliable, professional and very knowledgeable.  I knew I could trust his workmanship and referred him to many people.  I also could tell he was a hard worker and I'm not surprised that he defied medical odds and got up and got to Mexico after his accident.  What a guy!
