Ted MacMartin
EDWARD “TED” MACMARTIN
March 11, 1943 – July 24, 2024
With great sadness, we announce the passing of Edward “Ted” MacMartin at the HSC on July 24, 2024, at the age of 81. Ted was admitted with a broken ankle and passed away after surgery, peacefully in his sleep, as he had always wished.
He leaves behind two daughters, Lisa MacMartin (Marc Baltzan), and Kristine Posthumus (Brad, deceased on July 20, 2024) (Mother Bernice Kellar). Ted was a loving and proud grandfather to four grandchildren - Madison, Cameron, Margo and Max. Ted is survived by his brother Walter (Wally) MacMartin (Lynn); and his sister Patricia Duthoit (Russ); and many cousins, nieces, and nephews who all loved him immensely.
Ted was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary MacMartin, fondly known as 'Sweet Mary’; and his parents, Mary and Cyril MacMartin of Stonewall, Manitoba; and a cousin-in-law, Donald Tulloch.
Ted and Mary were an integral part of the Irish Association of Manitoba for many years where he volunteered his time to many different tasks. Ted was a creative and adventurous man who enjoyed working with his hands. He enjoyed building, working for hours in his garage creating with wood. Some of his personal specialties were his bird houses, goose plant holders, and all kinds of furniture. Ted helped build many sets for the Tara Players theatre and he built much of his own cottage at Brereton Lake in the Whiteshell. After an early retirement from the Manitoba Telephone System, Ted started his own small contractor business named Mac Handyman - Friendly Service Guaranteed.
In his later years when he no longer had access to a garage for wood-working, Ted turned to gardening and cooking for himself. He grew vegetables and flowers on his apartment balcony and his family and friends were accustomed to receiving frequent photos of the elaborate meals he prepared for himself, along with a glass of the red wine that he made himself.
Ted had a zest for life, which was never more evident than when he was at the cottage at Brereton Lake. He passed on his love for the outdoors, animals and being on the water to his children and grandchildren. He generously welcomed anyone who dropped by the cottage. Many people have very fond memories of the time they spent at Ted’s cottage.
Ted had a strong personality and was the heart of any gathering. He was an avid curler and enjoyed snowmobiling with friends in the Whiteshell. Ted had a passion for travel and enjoyed the freedom of the open road, not minding the destination as long as he was driving his Beemer convertible with the top down and the wind in his hair. It was paradise for him!
Ted lived life on his terms, and it was a long and successful journey. He had many friends and kept in touch with different circles of people, including his retired MTS colleagues and old curling buddies. He especially enjoyed spending time with his Irish friends at Big Guys, where they had their own regular table. In recent times, his activities slowed down due to mobility issues, but he still cherished his Friday Happy Hours at home, either alone connecting with others through social media, with his daughter Kristine, or with anyone who dropped by. Ted was a good, honest man who enjoyed life, loved deeply, and valued the people around him. He also had a lifelong love of dogs. Teddy will be missed by many.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
A celebration of life for Ted will be held at 3:00pm on Friday, September 6, 2024 at the Irish Association of Manitoba, 654 Erin Street, Winnipeg.
Death leaves a heartache no-one can heal;
Love leaves a memory no-one can steal.
Ted’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

Ted was an incredible guy. Derrick loved working with him behind the bar at the Irish Club, and I loved his involvement with Tara Players and how much he supported us in whatever way he could. We have wonderful and fun memories of our times together with he and Mary. We last saw Ted on St Paddy's day down at 654 where we snuck him a Guinness t-shirt from the secret stash.
You were a dear friend to so many, Ted and you are greatly missed. Say hello to Mary for us.

Deepest Condolances to Lisa and Kristy and thier families on the passing of Ted. We hope the many memories help you through this incrediably difficult time . When we arrived in Winnipeg Ted was waiting at the airport along with Mary and made it feel like home away from home straight away.. He filled the role of 2nd Father and Grandfather and for that the boys and I will forever remember Ted with love and happy memories. A gentleman through and through with an infectious sense of humour and a heart full of love. Thank you for always keeping in tough,
Rest easy Ted
