RICHARD (RICK) EDWARD MALCHUK
May 17, 1948 – May 18, 2026
It is with profound sadness that the family announces the passing of Richard (Rick) Edward Malchuk on May 18, 2026, at the Riverview Health Centre, following a courageous battle with cancer. Richard passed away at the age of 78, surrounded by the love of his family.
He leaves behind the love of his life and devoted wife of 53 years, Sheila; his cherished daughters, Melissa (Chris Bamberger) and Rhea (Brad Benner); his beloved grandchildren, Matthew, Ava, Ellie Rae, and Ethan; as well as his special mother-in-law, Eleanor Wowk. Richard’s family was the centre of his world, and he took immense pride in every moment spent with them.
Richard was predeceased by his siblings, Baby Malchuk (1953) and Gary Milne (1980), his Mother, Jean Malchuk (2005), and his Father, Matody (Edward) Malchuk (2008).
Richard was born on May 17, 1948, in Winnipeg. In the spring of 1961, his family moved to Thompson, where Richard built both his career and many lifelong friendships. He dedicated 34 years to Inco as a machinist and planner, earning the respect of his coworkers through his strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to help anyone in need.
Richard was truly one of a kind — a kind-hearted, hardworking, and generous man whose presence made people feel welcomed and valued. He was known for his sharp sense of style, quick wit, and ability to fix almost anything. A true jack-of-all-trades, Richard was always the first to offer a helping hand to family, friends, neighbours, and even strangers.
Many stories can be told of Richard’s high school years in Thompson and the fun shared with his House of Bacchus friends — memories filled with laughter, lifelong friendships, and unforgettable adventures.
He found joy in life’s simple pleasures and loved spending time skiing, snowmobiling, curling, fishing, hunting, and enjoying the occasional round of golf. One of Richard’s greatest pleasures was crafting walking sticks by hand for friends and loved ones — each one carefully made and given with pride and generosity.
Richard had a quiet strength, a gentle nature, and a way of making everyone around him feel cared for. He will be remembered not only for what he did, but for who he was: a loving husband, proud father and papa, loyal friend, and genuinely good man whose kindness touched countless lives. His legacy will live on through the many people he helped, the friendships he cherished, and the family he loved so deeply.
In 2003, Richard and Sheila moved to Winnipeg, where they continued to enjoy life surrounded by family and lifelong friends.
The family would like to sincerely thank the staff and caregivers of CancerCare Manitoba at Victoria Hospital for their care and support throughout Richard’s illness.
The family also extends heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and health care aides at the Riverview Health Centre for the compassionate care and kindness shown to Richard and his family during his final days.
A celebration of Richard’s life will be held from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at Four Points by Sheraton (2935 Pembina Hwy).
Flowers are gratefully declined. In memory of Richard, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation.

There are so, so many great stories of the fun & good times we had with Rick & Sheila over 60 years during House of Bacchus days, on ski trips together, playful times at Mystery Mountain, & visits to Winnipeg which came later. We will miss him greatly, but cherish the best memories we have. Our sincere condolences to the girls & their families. Love you all!
