JEAN MARIE MALLETTE

(née CRUICKSHANK)

September 28, 1934 - October 8, 2023

Marie passed on October 8, 2023 at the age of 89 at Seven Oaks Hospital.

Marie was predeceased by her parents Bill and Isla Cruickshank, her brother Glenn, and her loving husband, George. She is survived by her four daughters Donna (Doug), Judie, Kelly, Mikki, and her 5 grandchildren Christopher, Brett, Kayla, Allison (Chad) and Sarah.

Born in Birtle, Manitoba, her family moved to Winnipeg to the Norwood area, where she eventually met her husband George.  Marie began the pursuit of her love for figure skating by teaching at the Fort Garry Community Club, and helped organize many Winter Carnivals.  She went on to teach figure and power skating in St. Vital and Lorette.

George and Marie were actively involved with snowmobile racing in its early years.  Marie was crowned the winner of the Canadian Powderpuff Championships in Beausejour, Manitoba.  They enjoyed many weekends at racing events all over the province.

Brereton Lake held a special place in her heart.  The girls have many memories of summers spent swimming and water skiing.  George and Marie also spent time at Bird River and had many hijinx with Marge and Gil Bruce at Dogtooth Lake.  They finally retired to Betula Lake where they spent many happy years.

Marie’s favourite lifelong pastimes were newspaper crosswords, reading and knitting.  She always had a book on the go and a bag full of wool.  Her daughters reminisce about all the Mary Maxim sweaters Mom knit for them.  In later years, she turned to socks, with everyone proudly having many pairs of  colourful “Gramma socks”.  Marie also spent many hours knitting articles for charity, and was honoured with her group of friends by a local MLA in the Manitoba Legislature.

Other memories of Marie include her many volunteer hours at St. Amant Center, taking kids swimming.  She also spent many tireless hours in the canteen at the Lorette Sports Centre .  Mom always took immense pride in having a clean home and a beautiful yard.  She loved her dogs Muffy, Buddy, Sam, Tammy, Shaz, Bear, and little Dudley.  She treasured her time with good friend Mary Anne Vieville at Fancy Her Fashions.  Her daughters fondly remember their favourite birthday dinner Marie’s special spaghetti and meatballs.  She was a friend to many, including  a lifelong friendship with her neighbour from Barton Ave, Irene Rossman, Joan Mitosinka from Lorette, Marilyn from Betula Lake, and Carol Schmidt.  She loved her excursions with the Betula Lake Red Hats!

In lieu of flowers please consider making a contribution in Marie’s memory to any animal shelter or charity of your choice.

Our deepest sympathy to all of your families.  Mom and Dad were a fixture at Betula Lake for a very long time.  So, so sorry for your loss.

To all the Mallette Sisters, most especially my childhood friend Mikki, whose family taught me the love of sport, the Winnipeg Jets and shared many good times in their pool on Barton and one in Lorette, my deepest condolences. I can still hear your mom’s voice and laugh and remember so well our mom’s together. I am so sorry for your loss. Thank you so much for the warm words mentioning my mom and her connection with yours through Fancy Her Fashions. It was a community Centre in its own way too. 💕  May your memories give you all comfort.  Darlene (Vieville) Asselstine

My condolences to all the Mallette girls.  I will forever fondly remember Mrs. Mallette as not only my best friend Mikki's mom, but as an great woman who helped me expand my love of reading.  Her collection of best sellers in their lovely home in Lorette was better than anything from the library!  I enjoyed spending time with her discussing books she would recommend to me and was happy to have found such a kindred spirit in my teenage years.  She was always kind and generous to me and I  treasure the memories I had shopping with her and Mikki (as well as the great discounts she gave me) at Fancy her Fashion's every school year - lots of fun.  She was a great lady who enjoyed life to the fullest as was shown by the many people she helped and touched throughout her life!

Condolences to the family & friends of Marie.  She was a special friend to my Mom Marilyn Rajotte & they spent summers of friendship at Betula Lake as neighbors for many years.  They went on Red Hat outings together, solved each others crossword dilemmas together and were always annoyed at the show their granddaughters Sarah & Sara wanted to watch,  Caillou I still chuckle when I see a Caillou doll.  Marie was a very good friend to my Mom for many years and I am very grateful of that. I bet they have reunited up there and are working on the daily crossword puzzles together.   - Lisa Rajotte daughter of Marilyn
