HOWARD SOON MAR

July 26, 1951 - February 15, 2020

Howard Mar passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 15, 2020.

Howard is survived by his siblings: Phyllis (Wayne), Joy (Dean), Bea (Len) and Sinclair (Sarina). He is also survived by his many nieces and nephews: Chris (Erika), Marissa, Reese, Jason (Shelly), Nicole, Stefanie, Byron and Colin. They loved their Uncle How’s sense of humour and his genuine interest in their lives. He regularly gave them unsolicited advice to which they listened patiently and occasionally followed.

Howard will be greatly missed by his numerous friends who have enriched his life throughout his many years in Winnipeg. Howard appreciated very much the love, help and support from his close friends who stood by him through his many health challenges.

Howard grew up in Nanaimo, B.C. where he developed his love of music and first joined the air cadets. He went to Vancouver, B.C. to complete his post-secondary education in music.

Howard spent many years as a business educator, marketing director and financial advisor. However, his greatest love was in the area of music. Howard was a music educator, musician and conductor.  He has performed with the HMCS Chippawa Band, the Regimental Band of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, the PPCLI Band and the Air Command Band, as well as with numerous civilian bands and orchestras. He influenced and inspired many students as he shared his passion with countless students in many cadet bands and community bands.

While living in Alberta, he was a faculty member at Red Deer College with responsibility as Music Instructor, Performing Arts Coordinator, Continuing Education Programmer and Theatre Manager. He was also President of the Red Deer Allied Arts Council, President of Central Alberta Theatre,

Director of the Red Deer Concert Society, Leader of “In the Mood” Big Band and Music Director of the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra.

Howard served twenty years with several Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadrons as commanding Officer, Training Officer and Band Officer. He served for twenty-five years at summer camps in Penhold and Cold Lake as Officer Commanding Music Training and Officer Commanding Senior Leaders. He was the Provincial and Regional Cadet Music Advisor for twenty years. Howard was the Chairman of the Manitoba Provincial Committee (2011 -2014) and was elected to be a Governor of the Air Cadet League of Canada in 2016. He was the founder/Chair of the Manitoba Military Tattoo, founder/Chair of the Manitoba Seniors Music Festival, Chair of Manitoba Seniors Achievement Awards and Chair of the Organ Donation Awareness Society.

Most recently, Howard was the music director for the National Air Cadet League, sat on the Board of Governors for the National League, was on the Board of Directors for the Provincial League and was a Civilian Instructor of band and effective speaking for two squadrons and was the director of the Manitoba Air Cadet Concert Band and the Manitoba Air Cadet Brass Sextet. He was very much involved in effective speaking for the cadets as he thought this would be a beneficial life-skill for them.
Howard was a "mainstay" in the Winnipeg music community. He played trumpet in a variety of community bands; including Westwood, Northwinds, Legion 252, Murray Riddell Big Band, and Westworth. He is perhaps best appreciated for his work in co-starting the Friday Morning Concert Band; helping those eager adult music students improve their skills. Howard constantly believed that making music together would improve our world, and he dedicated himself to that purpose.
Howard received many awards during his career including the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada Medal, the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and the Canadian Forces Decoration and Bar.

Howard was a man of strong convictions who consistently demonstrated strength, courage and humour in all his endeavours. Howard had big ideas that came to fruition and did not let parameters, such as a limited budget, hold him back from producing extraordinary performances. His sense of humour and wit was unique. He even had a few tuba players follow him in the halls of the music training centre to play the music of Darth Vader to indicate a bad mood and the A&W root beer tune for a good mood.

We would like to express our appreciation for the excellent care that Winnipeg’s Health Sciences Centre has provided Howard for many years with his various medical procedures. We would also like to acknowledge and express our thanks for the caring medical and emotional support by the Intensive Care staff, as well as, the fifth floor staff at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg.

I was lucky to benefit from the bold vision and sensitive mentorship of Howard Mar.  He will be greatly missed, but his spirit lives on in the many lives he touched in this way.

We will miss Howard and the lovely conversations we shared at the condo.  One day Howard stopped to chat with us on our patio and expressed how much he appreciated and enjoyed the flowers on our patio.  We will dedicate the flowers this year in Howard's memory.  Our deepest sympathy to Howard's family . . . I worked closely with Howard during the planning and execution of the three week grand opening festival of the Red Deer College Arts Centre facility in 1986.  He was pivotal in the process and success of opening that facility.  I haven't seen Howard for a while but enjoyed my time working with him.  Condolences to the family.

To the family, so sorry to hear of your loss, may the many wonderful memories of Howard ease the coming days.  I had the opportunity to work with Howard in the Prairie Region Cadet Program in the late 90's.  Coming from 28 years as a Regular Force Logistics Capt, I didn't know much about the Cadets or their music program.  It was so refreshing to learn about the program from Howard and see his never ending enthusiasm and efforts to ensure the music program was a success and the total commitment to the youth.  I always thoroughly enjoyed the annual Tattoo, our many discussions, humour, and trying to fit all his planned activities into our annual budget, believe me it was money well spent on the youth.  Rest in Peace old buddy. The encouragement and opportunities “Major Mar” gave me when I was an air cadet in his cadet honour band were very formative and contributed to me having a career and life as a professional musician. He dreamed big and gave so many young musicians a chance to be part of incredibly grand performances. Thank you, and rest in peace.

Too soon; a towering presence who will be missed by all who knew him. The one endearing image I have of Howard is him conducting a group of musicians. The air cadet band in heaven will now have a new conductor.

Howard was my teacher, mentor, colleague and friend.  He always had great ideas and the ability to make them happen.  In his work with the Air Cadet program he always kept the best interest of the cadets at heart.  I feel honoured to have known Major Mar as a Commanding Officer when I was a band cadet at Penhold in the 80’s and then having served as a member of the Air Cadet League of Manitoba with him over the last few years.  I am so glad that my sons had the opportunity to work with Mr. Mar with the Manitoba Air Cadet Concert Band and Air Cadet Brass.  I will miss the music, our talks, his advice and the many wonderful meals we shared together. It is very sad to hear Howard is now in the spirit world. He was an amazing educator who I had the chance to learn from in the 1990s through the cadet honour band. He believed that we needed to encourage the best in our youth and celebrate their dedication and hard work. Lots of love Howard.  Robert Falcon Ouellette

I had the pleasure of meeting and working with Howard at a Summer Music Youth Program in Summer ‘71 that he helped to manage in Nanaimo. His recent trip to Nanaimo to see his family allowed me and a few of his old friends the chance to get together for a visit, and for that I will be forever grateful. I loved to hear about his music endeavours and have a laugh. Thinking of his family and hope the wonderful memories will bring peace. Sheila

I met Howard in 1994, while doing my LTQ  course in Penhold.  He was a great person, who introduced me to a “new food” called Dim Sum. RIP my old friend.

Howard was a prominent figure in the Cadet Music Training program. His passion for music and musical performances inspired many Cadets over the years. His leadership, guidance and mentorship of young officers was also inspiring. He was missed when he retired from the CIC, and he will be missed even moreso now. I feel honoured and privileged to have known him.

I had the privilege and honour of meeting Howard in the late 80s at Penhold. Moreover, I had the privilege of working with him as he advanced the cadet music program in the late 80s and early 90s. Howard’s tenacity is to be admired. Many young musicians, including my own children and grandchildren,  have been encouraged and their abilities enhanced because of Howard’s belief and dedication to the cadet music program. His legacy will live on. He will be greatly missed. Sending my sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

Howard was an amazing friend when I moved to Winnipeg to work at the cadet HQ 30 years ago. We shared so many wonderful times over the years and I will never forgot how he welcomed me and helped me navigate in my early days. He was funny, intelligent, passionate, loyal and incredibly talented. We shared so many laughs and way too much food! RIP dear friend. Your music will continue to play on.

My deepest condolences to Howard’s family at this time.  It was with shock and great sadness that I learnt of Howard’s death. He was a long-time friend and mentor who was always willing to share his advice whenever asked. He made a huge impact in the Central Alberta musical world; I have SO many great memories of the music we played together, the numerous musicals he led and all the social gatherings we enjoyed together.  The memories all of us have thru his creation of the In The Mood Big Band and The Red Deer Symphony Orchestra are ingrained with laughter and joy.  Howard was a man with big ideas and dreams, who was always able to bring them to fruition.  He will be sorely missed by the countless number of lives he touched - whose lives were better from knowing Howard.  RIP my dear friend!

So much talent, so much caring. So much giving with no expectation of anything in return. So much inspiration to others to come anywhere close to matching your devotion to changing the world in such a positive way. Such a great life, cut so short. Howard, my friend, whenever I listen to the symphonies, your devotion to music and to inspiration of others will be a symphony playing in my mind. Thank you much for the blessing of having been such an even small part of your life.

I met Howard 5+ years ago at the startup of Friday Morning Concert Band here in Winnipeg   .  It became a Friday Lunch ritual after rehearsal and then there were the dinners, so many different restaurants.  One time we found ourselves in the middle of a East Indian wedding party, and we stayed. We talked just about every day, tearing the world of politics apart   I admired his strength going through major health issues and would often find myself at a hospital at midnight while he underwent tests and treatments.   He was the most humble, honorable man I've ever known and most of his accomplishments were only known to me thru his obituary.  I'm glad i was able to spend the day talking to him in ICU until his family arrived. I miss him.  I loved him.

I was one of the patients that recovered with Howard at HSC, we shared a room together.  As a guitarist of 20+ years, I can't believe we never touched on the subject of music.  He seemed to be as passionate about it as I am.  RIP Howard ❤
