IRENE LEA MARCHAND

(née DUSABLON)

June 18, 1934 – February 27, 2023

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Irene Marchand on February 27, 2023 in Ste Anne Hospital at the age of 88 years. Irene was a proud founder of Lilac Resort.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to the doctors, nurses and staff at the Steinbach and Ste Anne Hospitals for their care and compassion during Irene’s final months.

Irene’s memory will be forever cherished by her sons, Michel Manaigre (Gayleen) and Daniel Manaigre (Tammy); her grandchildren, Shannon Carten (Robert), Christelle Manaigre-Baggs (Michael), Vincent Manaigre, Lyndsay Loeb (Matt), Kayla Hurley (Braden) and Brandi Pilon (Alphonse); the Marchand family; nephews, nieces, numerous great-grandchildren and friends.

Irene was predeceased by her husband Raymond Marchand; former husband Denis Manaigre; parents Treffle and Prudence Dusablon; siblings, Heldege (Emelia), Thomas-Louis, Yvonne (Aime), Cecile, Simone (Marcel) and Denise; stepson Derald Marchand; stepson-in-law Garry Hammett.

Irene was born in Gladmar, Saskatchewan on June 18, 1934. In November 1934, the Great Depression forced her father to pull up stakes and move to Manitoba, where they settled on a farm located on a river lot along the Seine River, just east of the town of Ste Anne. Irene had fond memories of growing up on the farm, she would often reminisce about how much she loved the outdoors and the fun she had playing with her dog and climbing the many oak trees that shaded the farmyard. When Irene couldn’t be outside, she loved to read, and she had a passion for history and geography. These interests motivated Irene to attend Normal School shortly after finishing high school to become a teacher. Irene taught in rural Manitoba towns including Boggy Creek, Lorette, Ste Anne and Richer and it was while working in Lorette that she met her first husband and father of her children, Denis Manaigre.

Irene’s dream of building a tourist destination and accommodations all began in 1955 when the construction of the Trans Canada Hwy, running thru the very northern tip of her father’s property, made the concept of building a tourist motel & campground a possibility. The area at that time was lacking swimming-picnic facilities for locals, so it seemed logical that adding something like a spring-fed pool could be a source of revenue. In the fall of 1957, Irene and her father Treffle, wearing gumboots and armed with shovels, slogged through their swampy woods in search of an area where springs were evident. After an extensive search, they found their spot and marked out the area that needed to be excavated for a spring-fed pool. That first spring-fed pool is where the water park now stands.

On December 7, 1957, Irene, Denis & Treffle began building the Lilac Motel & Campground. After a busy and challenging winter and spring, they welcomed their first guests on July 4, 1958. On September 6 of the same year, Irene and Denis were married and they soon welcomed their two sons, Michel in 1959 and Daniel in 1961. Treffle passed away on December 24, 1960.

From 1965 to 1972 Irene and Denis went through some difficult and turbulent years and divorced in 1975. With hard work and sheer determination, Irene managed to operate her motel and campground as a single mother while still teaching. She was a pioneer for women in a time when women entrepreneurs were not afforded the same rights, privileges and courtesies as men. Despite all odds, she persevered and held on to her dreams.

In September 1974, at a wedding in Estevan Saskatchewan, Irene met the love of her life, Raymond Marchand and they married on August 14, 1976. Irene was well received by Ray’s children and loved her new Saskatchewan family; Derald (Michelle) Marchand, Randy (Sheila) Marchand, Margo (Garry) Hammett, Joyce (Jim) Halladay, Jocelyn (Stanley) Weinrauch, Michelle (Jack) Betke, and grandchildren; Amanda (Anson), Cory (Karen), Carrie (Brandon), Garry Jr. (Kerrie), Rodney (Rebecca), Nicole (Brad), Chris (Jenna), Janelle (Terry), Jessica, Janessa, Christa (Corey), Jennifer, Dallas, Steven, Josey (Brent), Erin (Jorden), and 34 great-grandchildren.

Together Ray and Irene created countless unforgettable memories for their merged family, whether at Lilac, in Estevan or at their winter residence in Mesa, Arizona; they provided their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with all of the love, hospitality and humor a family could ask for.

After a couple of years of a long-distance marriage, Ray retired from his employment and moved from Estevan to assist Irene full-time at the campground. From 1976 to 1996 Irene and Ray worked tirelessly and with the help of her son Dan and Yvette Vincent, the campground expanded and grew in popularity. In 1991 Irene and Ray semi-retired when the Lilac Motel & Campground was incorporated as Lilac Resort Ltd.

In the spring of 1996, Irene and Ray purchased their winter home in Mesa Arizona. During their 17 years of being snowbirds, Irene and Ray made many friends and enjoyed many nights of playing cards, Wizard and dominos. During the day, while Ray was busy with his pool leagues, Irene would go hiking on the many trails in the beautiful Arizona desert. Irene enjoyed hiking so much that she started a hiking club and twice took her group beyond the Mesa desert to hike the Grand Canyon.

Irene and Ray enjoyed many adventures together, traveling across Canada and the United States. They both shared a love of family history and thoroughly enjoyed a trip to Europe where they visited historical buildings, researched family history and visited with relatives they had never met before. Their last adventure together was a cruise of the Panama Canal.

After Ray’s passing, Irene continued to spend her winters in Mesa until the spring of 2020. In February 2018, Irene crossed off a bucket list vacation when she visited the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador.

Irene never fully retired and will be always remembered by her family, friends and the Lilac Resort community for her hard work ethic and her love of flowers and gardening. She was often seen in the resort trimming branches, spraying poison ivy and watering the many gardens on warm summer evenings. Even this fall, with all the pain she was enduring, she somehow managed to cover her perennials and prepare her gardens for the winter. She possessed a true pioneer’s spirit; a ready willingness to take risks and endure hardship in order to explore new places, try new things or found a thriving small business. As a mom, mémère, and grand-mémère she led by example and instilled in her family the belief that with hard work and dedication, we can achieve our goals and dreams.

Irene’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

In keeping with Irene’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of Irene’s life with friends and relatives will be held at 2:00 p.m., 28th of May 2023, at Lilac Resort in Ste Anne, Manitoba.

Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the charity of your choice or to honor Irene’s memory, please consider planting her favourite flower, a Lilac Shrub.

Miss Me But Let Me Go

When I come to the end of the road

And the sun has set for me,

I want no rites in the gloom filled room,

Why cry for a soul set free?

Miss me a little, but not too long,

And not with your head bowed low,

Remember the love that we once shared,

Miss me, but let me go.

For this is a journey we must all take

And each must go alone,

It’s part of the Master’s plan,

A step on the road to home.

So when you are lonely and sick at heart

Go to the friends we know

And bury your surrows in doing good deeds,

Miss me – but let me go.

Rest in Peace.

My memories of 'Mrs. Manaigre' are of a time long past when I was living across the highway from the Lilac Motel.  Although it was only for a few years that I use to visit as a young child and play with Daniel and Michel as Irene cared well for us all, Irene made a lasting positive impression on my life.  I cherish the visits that I had with Irene in the ladder years, when I not only was able to reunite my late mother, Henrietta, with her once so close friend, but I also was able to introduce my son and husband, who also remember Irene as kind and welcoming.  Our thoughts are with you.

Irene was the kindest soul and shared her wisdom when it came to flowers/plants.  She followed her dreams and built a place that is very special to us and so many others.  From a quick wave to a longer conversation, Irene was always welcoming and pleasant.  I loved to see her prune plants and weed at times, always contributing to the beauty of the park.  I thank Irene and the entire Lilac Family for the creation of a very special place, one that we had the priviledge of owning a site at for many years.  You will be missed by so many Irene, but you live on in the hearts of your children who will keep your legacy running.❤ Our thoughts are with the Family at this time.

Our hearts are saddened to hear of the passing of a very dear lady and neighbour.  There wasn’t much that would stop Irene from being out in the park pruning, watering and caring for her plants.  It’s easy to see how her work ethic passed on to her family.  In the past we would often have a drink with Ray and Irene reminiscing about past events, but what will always be one of our most cherished memories is the wonderful time we had with Irene around our campfire one night, listening to her tell us about her childhood and early days of starting up Lilac Resort.  Her vision and dream (and most of all hard work) created a place that many of us have been able to enjoy.  We will miss our chats through the trees, your nightly twig fires and seeing you caring for your plants.  Rest in peace our dear friend!   Our sincere condolences to the Family.  ❤ ~ Greg and Evelyn Resler

To Dan and family! I am so sorry for your loss of your mom. I would see Irene at lilac driving around cleaning up old tree branches, garbage, weeding, watering the flowers, and taking care of the poison ivy too. I will miss her very much as we spoke frequently when she drove bye on her golf cart. She gave me some seeds to a climbing plant last summer which I enjoyed watching it grow. She was a very special lady indeed and will be sadly mist.

I was so saddened to hear of your loss.  Though I didn't know your mom on a personal level, she definitely made a mark on my life.  As a seasonal campsite owner, I always admired her for her unrelenting dedication to the resort...Whenever I asked her to spray the poison ivy on my site, she was always there, willing and able!  We shared a great passion, nature and flowers! I would always comment to my friends and neighbors:  "God, I hope I can be like her when I'm her age!" Your mom was a true matriarch. a woman with ambition and vison, something that was unheard of so many years ago!   Though it\s always difficult to lose a loved one, her legacy will always be remembered by the countless lives she touched! My heartfelt sympathy to you and your loved ones! Aline Lavich

Sorry about your loss Dan. Sorry about the loss to Lilac as well. I feel the people from at generation truly loved being busy, and accomplishing things. She was one of that type.  I also know people born before the computer age, example Dan, and many others also have this strong work (something). I always love Lilac because it is ran so well. Now I fully see why, because you have been taught how. Let's make and keep Lilac the most butiful as possible as your mother can watch over it from heaven. Bill

The most vivid memory I have is of Ma Tante Irèene showing me a flower growing near her house in some bushes.  This was her favourite and it was wild and so very beautiful.  About nine years ago I gave her a large children's' book about an indigenous legend telling the origin of this flower hoping she might want to share it with her grandchildren with whom I am sure she had already shared the flower.  This flower was endangered and so she wanted to keep the secret of its whereabouts to protect it.  This was not a flower for picking but for admiring in its natural habitat.  The legend is beautiful like the flower.  Like Ma Tante /Iràne.  Blessings to all who feel a loss.  I am sure she is surrounded by many wonderful flowers now.

My deep sympathies to both Mike and Dan.Irène was an exceptional woman juggling her work at the Motel, teaching and raising her family.I along with Suzanne and René spent much time at the Motel as my parents were very good friends of Irène and Denis.I can almost say Mike and Dan were like brothers to us.From our first day at school to our First Communion ,these milestones were always celebrated together. This is why when Mike and Dan came back from B.C. we welcomed them with open arms.Irène was very insightful when it came to realizing our dreams. After several music lessons with the boys at Major and Minor we were offered a Motel for our practices and this would later have a huge intact on my own career path.Despite her busy days at Lilac during the camping season we could always  expect something to eat even if it meant 10pm after the work was done. Reposes toi en paix,tu le mérites bien Irène.

What can we say about Irene?  She was one of a kind!!  When Roger and I would head to Phoenix we always made a point to stop by and visit; which ended up with supper, many laughs and playing dominos with her and Ray.  When Ray passed, we still made a point to visit Irene in Mesa which always ended up with us staying for supper. Lilac will not be the same without her!  We will miss seeing her golf cart on the road and where is Irene?  She's in the bush trimming branches, spraying poison ivy or tending to her flowers.   In the last number of years we used to make sure she was stocked up with home made dills, picked beets and home made relish which was her absolute favourite!  She always had a big smile on her face when she knew she was getting relish and was always grateful!  In turn we would find a thank you note on our table with a jar of her home made jelly and a reminder that she was watering our tomatoes during the week.   Irene holds a special place in our hearts ❤ and she will be forever missed.  She is now with Ray, tending to her flowers in the big old sky above!  Our heartfelt condolences to the entire Lilac family.

Irene was one of the sweetest, most hard-working women I ever knew, and without her tireless efforts, my Summers would have never been the same. We started  camping at Lilac in the early 80s, and had one of the very first sites around the old water hole, which turned into the first pool, and then the Waterslide complex.  I have nothing but happy memories from my many summers at Lilac, have made many lifelong friends, and it's all because of Irene's efforts. She was a pioneer, a workhorse, a role model, and just an all around sweet woman. I thank you for everything you have done, because I know I am definitely not the first, nor the last Lilac Kid that will end up with a ton of happy memories because of that magical place called Lilac. I have added a picture of myself and Irene presenting me with my 3rd place trophy from the 1983 Lilac Mini Golf Tournament. I still have it to this day, along with my many happy memories. My condolences to Mike, Danny and the rest of the extended family...

Irene was one of the most remarkable woman I have ever had the pleasure to meet. Mike and I have many fond memories of times spent with her and Ray at both Lilac and Mesa. We always laughed during a card game when Mike was busy telling a story and she would say to him “Pay attention “.   She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Heartfelt condolences to all the family

Irene was such a wonderful part of Lilac its hard to imagine that she will not be driving around in her golf cart tending to all her flowers and killing poison ivy. She was a friend and will be dearly missed, I was fortunate in having lunch dates with her every summer for the last several years. We shared many things on those outings and even drove through the country side bringing up memories. Our most sincere condolences, Danny, Michel and your families. I know she will still be in Lilac in spirit. What a wonderful idea to have her celebration of life there. She must still be tending flowers and enjoying a well deserved rest.
