EILEEN LAURA MARSHALL

October 18, 1951 - July 29, 2022

It is with profound sadness that we announce Eileen’s passing on July 29, 2022, after a short but courageous battle with brain cancer.

Eileen will be deeply missed by Jack Wilkinson, her husband and best friend of 42 years; their daughters, Amy (Aaron) and Emily; granddaughters, Hazel and Clara; her two brothers, Robert (Jean) and Alan (Melody); sisters-in-law, Catherine Shelton (Andrew), Margaret Ann Brown, and Joan Sitterud (Jay); many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a wide circle of friends and colleagues, including her beloved “Supper Club.” She was predeceased by her parents, Reg and Laura Marshall; her mother-in-law Margaret Wilkinson; her sister-in-law Emma Wilkinson; and her dear friend Catherine Krykewich Cross.

Eileen was born in Toronto and in her early childhood, moved to Winnipeg with her mother and father, settling on Hazeldell Avenue in East Kildonan. When her two brothers arrived, Eileen became the protective big sister she remained all her life. As a child, she spent many summers with her Owen Sound family, visiting Sauble Beach, the family farm and her treasured Grandma Beattie. In her teens, Eileen taught piano and attended Miles Macdonell Collegiate, making friends she kept until the very end.

Eileen graduated from the University of Manitoba and backpacked with a friend through Europe. On returning home, she worked with at-risk youth at Children's Home of Winnipeg and Luxton School, which inspired her to return to university to study education. Teaching was to become Eileen's lifelong passion.

Eileen's teaching career really started at William Whyte School, where she formed many lifelong friendships. There she developed a deep commitment to the education of young children. An outspoken advocate for best practices in education, Eileen was a founding member of the Grove Street Teachers' Centre and was sought after to lead many workshops for other educators throughout her career. Eileen later moved to Wolseley School, where she job-shared with Jack in a multiage classroom for 17 years. She subsequently took over the Resource Program at Wolseley, staying close to the colleagues and community she cherished before retiring in 2017. Eileen was a force for good education, supporting kids with all their various gifts and challenges.

Eileen met Jack, the love of her life, in 1980. Their relationship was one of immeasurable love, respect, honesty and mutual admiration; it nurtured and sustained them both through life's highs and lows. Eileen found immense joy in their beautiful Wolseley home, in sharing her work with Jack, and in their two daughters. Eileen was a devoted mom to Amy and Emily. She loved them fiercely and remained a steadfast support until her passing. There wasn't anything she wouldn't do for her two kids. Becoming a grandmother, or Gaga, brought delight and excitement beyond compare. Eileen created a beautiful playroom in her home, where many happy hours were spent playing with her granddaughters over the past three years. It brought Eileen immense sadness to know she would not see her grandchildren grow up. Eileen was truly the glue that held us together, welcoming family and friends into her home for Sunday dinners, birthday parties, and Christmas mornings. She made everyone feel loved and valued.

Following her retirement from teaching, Eileen dedicated herself to hobbies and projects new and old. Piano, violin, bridge, swimming, and yoga sustained Eileen and brought her great joy and new friendships. She did everything with passion, commitment, and discipline. A woman of routines, Eileen enjoyed her early morning coffee at her desk, where she made lists for the day and “balanced the books.” She was immensely practical and sensible, but also incredibly generous and giving of her time, talents, and resources. Following her diagnosis, Eileen kept up with the business of living and maintained a get-on-with-it attitude. Eileen's wish was to remain at home through her illness, where she took great pleasure in thunderstorms and in visits from her many friends and family. She was characteristically happy until the end.

We will miss you so much, Mom. May you rest in peace.

A celebration of life will be held on August 17, at 2 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church at 603 Wellington Crescent.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Eileen's memory to the Literacy for Life Fund through the Winnipeg Foundation.

Eileen’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Eileen gathered with my mom Rosetta and the other wonderful supper club members for over 40 years. Along with Jack, role models to me growing up, Eileen was a unique presence in our family’s circle of friends. Such a gifted pianist, what a neat thing when she picked up the violin later in life. Sometimes, when at a gathering we would be turning over and over the complexities of some issue, Eileen would sum it up and clinch it with a single statement. I still don’t know how she did that! My condolences to Jack, Amy, Emily and the extended family. And all my love and sympathies to Jill, Mary, Rosetta, Ellen, and Carla of supper club.

Several years ago we made the journey up to Winnipeg. Having never met us in person, Eileen and Jack welcomed my husband Eric and me (Amy and Emily's second cousin) into their home. It was such an amazing trip and to this day we cherish the memories! It's hard to describe how welcomed Eileen and Jack made us feel. We shared memories of the Johnstone siblings, specifically of my grandma Ray and Jack's mom Margaret. I know that you will share such beautiful memories of Eileen with her granddaughters and they will know she was a very remarkable soul. We are sending so much love to you all. - Katie, Eric, and Hugh Graves.

Deepest condolences to you Jack, Amy, and Emily from your old neighbours.  Eileen and Jack were wonderful mentors and supportive friends as I launched my teaching career.  Eileen was often my sounding board as a parent while our daughters went through elementary school together. She brought a lot of life to every situation and I know she will be deeply missed by you and her many friends. Isabel, Robert, and Emma

For several years, Eileen, Jack, Ann and I had season tickets together at PTE (Prairie Theatre Exchange). I’m sure we saw many great plays during that time but that’s not what I remember the most.  What I remember best of all were the times we spent together after the plays. First we would have to  decide where to go, however Eileen might suggest we go back to their place for a glass of wine first. Then we would head off to the restaurant and continue our lively conversations.  I always enjoyed hearing Eileen’s opinions on the issues of the day especially those concerning education. We would talk, laugh, share our sorrows, laugh, rant, laugh and just have a wonderful time. I will cherish those evenings forever. Thank you Eileen ❤️

It was a great pleasure to teach Eileen how to play the violin over the last several years.  She was a wonderful student -- organized, conscientious, and motivated.  During our time together, she made fantastic progress and I gained a kind and thoughtful friend.  My condolences to Jack, Amy, Emily, and the extended family on your untimely loss.  Sincerely,  Laurel Howard

Oh her sweet smile and her ability to laugh stands out in my mind. I remember just thinking as a child how with it and clever she was  and how much a loved the feeling of being around her. I deeply trusted her. Being around her I always felt safe and seen. I love you all. So much to say and alas Just little box to write in. I am thinking of you all a lot. Wish I could be there. ❤ Hopefully talk soon! Kathe

Our family is forever grateful to have had Eileen Marshall in our lives.  For six years, what the kids did with Eileen and Jack was the topic of conversation at our dinner table - always stories of fun and excitement and "guess what we learned today?"  We shall never forget her.

I’m so incredibly sad to hear of Eileen’s passing. My deepest condolences  to Jack, Amy, Emily and the rest of the family. I worked at Wolseley School with Eileen during her last 6 years there and treasure that time. She was in resource already when I started there as a new teacher and she was such a great mentor to me. I was also lucky that I got to team teach with her math and she opened my eyes on all the amazing hands on ways to learn math at a grade 4/5/6 level. A few years ago she gave me her old amazing sweater vest that has a teacher scene on the front. I will continue to wear it at Wolseley School and think of her. She will be greatly missed.

Dear Jack, Emily, Amy, & family;  mere words seem so inadequate at such a time, as I offer my condolences for your loss with Eileen's passing.  She and I were neighbors and friends during our teen and college years, together with Gerry and Carol Berezuk.  Eileen rode across town to U of M with me, Gerry and various others during our college years.  She always bought sunshine and joy to our car pool, even on the coldest Winnipeg winter mornings.  Unfortunately we drifted out of touch after I moved away from Winnipeg in the mid 70s. I am so grateful to read this amazing life story that you have written in her tribute.  Eileen certainly lived a full, loving, and wonderful life.  You will miss he greatly; hold fast to all your memories and live your lives as a fitting legacy to her.    Blessings and grace, Jim Brook, formerly 115 Linden Ave.

I would like to share a story about Eileen when she was the resource teacher at Wolseley School, where her and I worked together.   She had programmed a brilliant “little math group” for our students with exceptional needs. Eileen was so adored by each of her students, she keep each on engaged in math in the most amazing way! One morning at school, there was a Substitute Teacher that dropped in to Eileen’s little math group. In a matter of minutes this fellow had dosed off in his chair and was snoring very loud. In Eileen’s best teacher, almost Monty Python-ish voice, she responded; “Well I didn’t know I was that boring!” , stirring him from him cat nap!  Can you not just hear her announcing that across the classroom?  Eileen only took the smallest amount of pleasure in shaking this man awake with her rebuttal to his snoring.  Eileen you were the teacher I learnt the most from.   Thank you I can almost hear you and Catherine laughing together. ❤️❤️❤️

Eileen was such an inspiration to me as a new teacher and such a voice for early education in the division.  She and Jack had a beautiful classroom where theory became reality.  Such a bright light.  My sympathy to Jack and their daughters.

My condolences. Such sad news! You will miss her. I was Amy and Emily’s Montessori pre-school teacher, and then Eileen and Jack became our son Joe’s teachers at Wolseley School. I have very fond memories of their classroom and how deeply committed they were to creating a nurturing, calm and challenging learning environment. I’m very grateful for the years Joe had there. Fond regards, Mimi Mirus

My Deepest Sympathies to Jack Amy, Aaron, Emily, Hazel and Clara. I consider my time working with Eileen at Wolseley School such an incredible blessing. Her never ending support to me as the Resource Teacher was so valuable, I am at a loss of words to explain what it meant to me and all the lucky students that benefitted from it. Wherever Eileen was in the school there was a bright positive light surrounding her and ALL of us students, staff and their families benefitted from all those talents, passion and tremendous grace. Even in her retirement she insisted on treating myself and other EA's to decadent meal out one evening. Try as we might to argue that we should be treating and celebrating her, she was very direct and insistent how that evening was going to unfold. I will forever cherish the many memories and I feel so very fortunate that I was able to work with Eileen, one of the best human beings I have ever known.
