DOROTHY MARTENS

The family of Dorothy Martens (née Dove) of Winnipeg is saddened to announce her passing on November 30th, 2024, at the age of 96.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband of 73 years, Henry; and son-in-law Ken Loeppky.

Left to cherish her memories are her six children, Ken (Lynn), Ev (Doug), Pat, Lester (Katie), Mildred (Ed), and Bruce (Luba); her grandchildren, Jamie Marjoram, Jennifer Loeppky, Colin Marjoram, Mark Loeppky, Alexander Martens, and Andrew Martens; and great grandchild, Shaelynn Marjoram.

Dorothy grew up near the small town of Speers, Saskatchewan and went on to find work in Winnipeg. It is here that she met her future husband. They were married in 1950 and she spent the next 30 years taking care of her family and assisting with the management of Henry’s business. Dorothy was never one to waste anything and managed to make do with very little.

Summers would often find her helping one of her sons, extracting honey in their beekeeping operations. She continued helping out well into her 80s. It was exhausting work, but as long as she had someone else willing to make meals, she was happy to do it.

Dorothy lived independently well into her nineties. She took trips visiting her children in Mexico, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia.

In her spare time, Dorothy enjoyed reading, puzzles, board games, and cross-stitch.

The family would like to extend special thanks to her granddaughter, Jennifer, and sister-in-law, Sarah, for being there when we couldn’t be.

She will be interred with her husband at the New Ottawa Cemetery near Speers, Saskatchewan at a later date.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to one of Dorothy’s favourite charities: MCC Canada, Doctors Without Borders, Operation Smile, Salvation Army, and the Dorothy and Henry Martens, K+L trust.

Dorothy’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Grandma was an incredible woman with a heart of gold and a love for pleaseing everyone around her. bad things didn't matter she just rolled with the punches and made the best of it. She usuall had a smile on her face especially when food was involved. family was very important. And she loved her independence at the end when she joined in a social group to play mexican train and rumolli. She also delivered her own flyer route while living independently until 95. This lady truely is an inspiration to me and I will miss her dearly. Rest easy grandma.
