BARBARA MATHESON

May 29, 1944 - December 26, 2023

Barbara Matheson was born in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan May 29, 1944 to Selkirk Settlers the Mathesons and the Burrows but lived her early years in Winnipeg.

She attended Qu’Appelle Diocesan School in Regina in the early 60’s and went on to study at the University of Toronto. She worked for the CBC as an electrical/lighting technician, showing her hands on work skills. As a spiritual person she spent time at the convent of the Sisters of St. John the Divine. Barb’s main commitment was to her interests in therapy and healing. Barb volunteered in Mexico for several years becoming fluent in Spanish. Retuning to live in Calgary she was involved in social services and community action.

She then returned to Winnipeg and bought a small fixer upper house in the inner-city community of North Point Douglas where she lived for the past 20 years.

Barb was a quiet activist in North Point Douglas. She served as Secretary of the North Point Douglas Residents’ Committee for many years. She was treasurer of SISTARS when Eagle Wing Child Care Centre was built and Barber House, the oldest house in Winnipeg, was brought back to life. In spite of having no financial background, she managed eight different funders and a budget of over a million dollars to bring these two important parts of the community’s social fabric to fruition.

Barb worked in human services and graduated as a Social worker at the age of 75. She became a registered Family Therapist and continued seeing families in need in her home office on Stephens street until a few months before her death.

Barb was active in making Point Douglas a safer community. She was a strong supporter of the Point Powerline and was one of the first residents to identify and close a major drug dealer, spotting a brand new Hummer visiting a suspect house on her street.

Barb loved her little house on Stephens and spent many happy hours as a handywoman, fixing things in her house and making her back yard a glorious garden. Barb will miss her Point Douglas life and Point Douglas will miss her.

Barb was a keen sportsperson and played competitive badminton in her youth. She was out playing tennis until this fall and followed tennis and basketball on the TV.

Barb had a wonderful circle of friends who rallied around her as her health deteriorated.

She is loving remembered by Sel Burrows, her cousin and mentor as well as her brother John Matheson (Anne) and loving nieces and nephews and many caring friends.

Always remembered and ever in our hearts.

A memorial service will be held in the coming weeks.

Barb's family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Barb and I were badminton partners at QDS and participated together in whatever sports were on offer. Looking back, it's her energy, enthusiasm -- the powerful sense of embracing life to the full -- that I remember. And the total body laugh that shook the room. And there was always a twinkle of mischief about to happen.  And it seems she continued to live a full life with all of these qualities in full bloom and dedicated to others. Wish I'd stayed in touch more.

I was Barbs "Furnace Guy" for the last 6-7yrs.  always looked forward to our chats after, sometimes for a hour!  fascinating discussions on Sociology & self journeys,  had a way of making you comfortable revealing anything personal,  tough lady too.... not afraid to take on anything, Will always remember & admire Barb, am saddened to have received this news. interestingly, I lived on Stephens St. in the 80's & from time-to-time drive past & see how the house is,  now i will also keep an eye on your place as well Barb

I met Barb a few years ago as we were both learning to play tennis. I didn’t know her athletic background at the time, but I witnessed her moving like someone in her 50s, not late 70s. She was always happy to “bounce some balls” and was wonderful company.  It’s astounding how she decided to empty and sell her house when she had weeks to live. She had help, but even so not many people would even consider doing this.  She showed everyone what lifelong learning really is. She was excited and energized by enrolling in so many webinars. She was a generous, intelligent, inspiring,  sometimes formidable, and always caring person. She is missed.  Lee Malcolmson

I had the very good fortune to meet Barb as part of my journey to learn Spanish.  We shared travel adventure stories, interest in home renovation and building, Indigenous cultures, and people.  She had so many areas of expertise and was always happy to share what she had learned all along the way. Barb was an inspiration to me, and to many. I miss her.

Barb was an inspiring person to be around and lead a life full of growth, joy, and determination. It was my pleasure to share our practicum experience , she was full of  wisdom and always willing to offer help in her many expertise. Barb had a great sense of humour and it was always fun to hear her tell stories of her life (or what seemed like several lives) What an amazing journey! I would like to offer my condolences to her family and friends. Rest in peace Barb

Thanks for your love and caring. Thanks for all the rides after evening classes. You asked me to walk with you to the parking lot, and dropped me off to my home even it was only 2 blocks away from UW. You had a big heart. It is my honor to know you, and our lives crossed over at some point. I am going to miss you.

I was blessed to meet and get to know Barb the last year or so. Stopping in for a quick chat always resulted in hours of chatting and hearing about all her incredible adventures. She was a exceptional person and will be missed.
