JEANY MATIAS

(née Kawz)

September 10, 1952 – February 16, 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jeany Matias. She died peacefully with family by her side after battling a brief illness on February 16th, 2025.

Jeany was predeceased by her parents Karl and Bertha. She is survived by her husband, Victor Matias, her son, Carlos Matias and her daughter, Vanessa (Nolan) Harriott; her grandchildren, Evan and Adrian, niece, Dulce (Dirk) Creighton, and their children, Owen and Ethan and countless other relatives and friends.

Jeany was born on September 10, 1952, in Winnipeg Manitoba. Jeany lived in Winnipeg all her life and is the place she met her husband of 46 years. Jeany worked for Manitoba Justice for many years and retired in 2019. Jeany spent her retirement years enjoying time with her family and friends. One of her favourite pass times was going for lunch with her grandchildren. Jeany enjoyed baking and crafts, such as making celebratory cards. Through her baking and cards, her hope was to put a smile on people’s faces. Jeany will be greatly missed.

In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place, and her ashes will be laid to rest in Chapel Lawn Cemetery.

Dear Victor, I was very saddened to read of Jeany's passing. Whenever I would meet her at Christmas parties or retirement events, I would say "I Dream of Jeannie". Jeany was an amazing person, always so friendly, very kind, full of mischief and very honest. She was fun to be with and you knew if you were sitting at Jeany's table there would be plenty of laughs. May all the wonderful memories of Jeany help you and your family at this difficult time. I send my sympathy. Rest in peace dear Jeany.

Deepest condolences to Jeanys family. I enjoyed growing up with Jeany who would often go out to lunch with my grandma Doreen and I. Keanu and my grandma met working at the court office where I also had the opportunity to work with Jeany as well. It was always a laugh spending time with them both. Jeans sense of humor and prank skills will go unmatched I'm sure. She will be remembered fondly

My deepest condolences to my childhood friend Carlos, sister Vanessa and father Victor. I recall with much fondness how kind your mother was to me whenever I would visit your home. She would always offer a treat of some sort or something to cool to drink after playing outside on Ashburn. May she rest in peace and know that she is loved, until we meet again.

My heart is saddened by this news and for your loss Victor and family. Jeany was everybody's mama bear at work. She had the biggest laugh, the kindest heart, and made the best chocolate zucchini cake ever. My deepest condolences to you all.

This is a picture of the sign she left on her desk when she retired. She left her footprints on all our hearts 💜

Vanessa, I’m so sorry for the loss of your mom. Although I never had the honour of meeting her, reading her obituary and the other tributes shows how deeply her qualities have influenced the kind and thoughtful person that you are. You sound so alike! My heart and prayers go out to you and your family during this sad time, and I hope you find comfort in precious memories.

I have worked with Jeany for many years and she has quickly become my work momma and beacon of hope. I met her way before when I was a yoath working small jobs and then reconnected when I started in Justice. She kept me straight, honest and on my toes from day one, and was an inspiration to me. Many laughs and teading were shared over the years. My life would not be the same without her guidance and amazing personality, she was an outstanding and caring human being, and this is and absolutely heartbreaking loss. I am so happy she had the opportunity to enjoy some family time during her retirement.

My deepest condolences to her family! She was absolutely one of a kind.

I worked with Jeany for many years at the Justice Department. We often got into trouble for the many mischievous things we got into. We shared many laughs together and I treasured her friendship throughout the years working there. I'm so sorry to hear of her passing...Jeany spread alot of joy and laughter to many people. She will be greatly missed!

One photo was taken in Portugal in the late 80s/early 90s and one was taken at Vanessa and Nolan's wedding shower (my mom, Teresa and aunt Jeany). Great memories.

  • Jeany was a wonderful aunt. She was always there for me growing up. She always prioritized family. Jeany was generous and thoughtful and had a great sense of humour. She was a steady figure in my life. I will always remember her kind nature and loving presence. She was a thoughtful great aunt to my kids and a funny and thoughtful aunt to my husband, Dirk. She will be tremendously missed and always lovingly remembered.

Jeany was one of the kindest and most thoughtful person I knew. Her generosity knew no bounds. From her delicious baking, thoughtful, humerous cards and gifts, and teasing and joking, life around Jeany was exciting and a great place to be. We will miss her terribly and she will be forever remembered. We are proud to have been part of her life.

So sorry for your loss Vanessa and family. The memories of your mom will soon bring smiles instead of tears. Jeany's baking was incredible. Her kindness shows in Vanessa!
