CONNIE ALICE MATTHEWS

October 21, 1936 - June 2, 2022

It is with great sadness and beautiful memories we remember our mother and grandmother, Connie Alice Matthews.  She left us peacefully in her sleep, Thursday, June 2, 2022 at the age of 85.

Connie is predeceased by her parents, George and Rose Wallis, her beloved sister Shirley Tyderkie, and her husband Jack. Left to cherish her memory her daughter Wendy (Barrie), her son Grant, her granddaughters Jennifer (Phil) and Brittney (Evan), and her first great grandson Weston Jack.  As well as her three nieces, Laurel, Diane and Merrill who affectionately called her “Ko-Ko”.

Over the years, Mom and dad were members of the Winnipeg Canoe Club, Redboine Boating Club and the Gimli Yacht Club.  They taught us the love of the outdoors. Many happy times were spent canoeing, boating, sailing, camping and in later years biking through Hecla and Birds Hill Park.  Many summer days were spent driving to Patricia Beach with cousins in the back of the station wagon or running around the greenhouses at our family nursery, Wallis Greenhouses.  Mom was also a long-time member of the Sherwood Park Lutheran Church.

Happiest times for mom was spending time with her granddaughters.  Grandma, “Connieflower” as they called, her taught them the love of a grandmother.  She was always on the floor playing with them, putting on any costume they wanted her to dress up in, having tea parties, baking, DIY crafting, gardening, and spending time at the pool at her apartment. She was a much loved grandma.

Life was not kind to mom over the last few years as we walked through the last 10 years with her Dementia.  We couldn’t have done it without the comfort of exceptional health care at Deer Lodge, Tower 7.  We are forever grateful to you for taking such great care of mom. A special thank you to her Social Worker, Lindsay, for being my mom’s friend and going beyond in doing special things for her.

A celebration of life will be held later this summer and a private family interment of her ashes will be held at the Elmwood Cemetery where she will be reunited with her parents and sister.

For those interested in donating, please consider any mental health organization you may be familiar with, or in memory of mom’s kindness, do a random act of kindness for someone less fortunate.

I know it is such a sad time, but you should know that throughout our childhood we counted ourselves blessed because we spent so much time together almost as one family!  Yes - the greenhouses and sleepovers at Grandma and Grandpa's!  We loved Koko (who, although an aunt, we never called her that!) so dearly, and her love for her family was reflected in her face and the time she shared.  Your mom also used to write letters, which people don't do much these days, but we found many of these letters amongst our mom's treasured keepsakes.  To know the two sisters will rest together makes my heart a little happier at this sad time.  Much love to you all.

I was one of the cousins who got to ride in the back of that station wagon all the way to Patricia beach.  It is a memory I think of often.  Koko was a very special aunt, with such a beautiful smile and gentle, lilting laugh.  You are now with your sister (my mom) and your parents and I have no doubt your smile is even brighter today.   With deepest condolences to the family.

I remember Connie as an active and always friendly member of SPLC. She loved to greet members and took great pride in being the SPLC librarian. My condolences to all of her family

At this time of grief, I would like to brighten your day with a memory from long ago. I got to know Connie when she was still a Wallis. Her sister, Shirley, was Uncle Eddy's teenage heart throb, the one who walked along the railroad track from their greenhouse to Grandma Tyderkie's place on Tweed Ave. in Elmwood. It was a long walk for them, and once I got to know Shirley's sister, Connie, it was a long walk across the open fields for me to visit Connie.       She was so pretty, four years older than I, and I thought the world of her. Besides, we shared the same name, Connie.      Over the years we lost touch. I am so pleased that Diane informed me of her aunt Koko's recent passing. It brings back many memories of happier times, and I want you to know how much I adored your sister and mother as a teenager. Connie Schroeder (nee Rempel)
