WERNER ARTHUR MATYSIAK

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing, on March 31, 2023, of Werner Arthur Matysiak; our loving father, grandfather and dear friend. He was a remarkable individual whose memory will forever hold a special place in our hearts. Werner leaves to cherish his memory his children, Maggie Matysiak and Jonathan (Krisanne) Kurtas; his grandchildren, Hunter, Paige, Greg, Shaelyn, Ailey, and Luke. The son of Walter and Magdalena Matysiak, Werner was born in St. Ingbert, Germany on June 12, 1949. He is survived by his brother Heinz Matysiak.

Werner moved to Canada with his family at the age of seven where he later graduated from Transcona Collegiate Institute and the University of Winnipeg. As a young man, he had a passion for playing inter-collegiate soccer and water polo, showcasing his athleticism and love for sports. Werner also utilized his talents as a model and lifeguard at Winnipeg Beach. Throughout the years in his leisure time, Werner found great pleasure in working on his beloved 1959 MGA.

Werner had a fulfilling career as a Pool Supervisor at various locations, including Sargent Park, Concordia, Pan Am, Cindy Klassen, Sherbrook, and Eldon Ross Pools. He was highly regarded by his colleagues and staff, leading the way in installing the Splash Pad at the Pan Am pool. Werner inspired those around him to feel valued and appreciated for their contributions.

More than just a professional, Werner was a person who connected others and brought them together. He possessed a genuine thoughtfulness and care for others, always willing to drop anything to lend a helping hand. From friends and family in Germany, Australia, the USA, and across Canada, he made it a point to reach out and stay connected with all. He found joy in organizing exhilarating ski trips to Big Sky, Montana, Clear Lake, Kelowna, and Sharon's cottage at Granite Lake, where cherished memories were created with loved ones.

One of Werner’s greatest joys was spending time with his grandchildren, who knew him as Opa. He was a large part of their lives and always put them first, above all else. When not grandfathering, Werner also cherished his time playing golf and sharing laughs with his closest friends.

In keeping with his wishes, Werner has been cremated, and a celebration of his life will be held at 2pm on Thursday, July 13, 2023, at 603 Wellington Crescent (Unitarian Church). Please consider bringing a picture of Werner to share with the family to honor the beautiful memories he created.

Werner will forever be remembered for his unwavering love, his ability to bring people together, and his kind-hearted nature. His spirit will continue to inspire us all. May he rest in peace, knowing that his legacy lives on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to have known him.

Werner's family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

We all have such fond memories of visits with Werner and his family, in Kelowna and Winnipeg.  His last visit to Kelowna was in February with a few grandkids in tow - what a trip for them all.   Werner was always so generous, fun loving and planning the next event.  Our sincere condolences to Werner's family - he will be watching over you all!

My sincere condolences to Werner’s Children, Grandchildren, and family with his passing. I was a co- worker at many of the city sites that he worked at and finally at Pan Am Pool prior to my retirement. Werner was a great person and I’ll miss my old poker playing buddy. I loved when he showed off his pictures of him being an extra in movies that were shot here in Winnipeg.  Once again my deepest heart felt condolences  Larry McDonald ( former chief Engineer Pan Am Pool )

Werner was a good friend since our Kildonan Park lifeguarding and water polo days. Werner was renowned for his generosity of spirit and time. If anyone needed a hand he was there, even if "there"was a friend's house in North Vancouver that needed painting over a summer long weekend. (Yes, he flew out just to do that.) I recall many evenings spent with Werner and mutual friends, punctuated with good food, adult beverages and lots of laughter. I wish we could have had a few more.of them. As those who know him will attest, Werner adored his children, Maggie and Jonathan, and his grandchildren. Diane and I send our condolences to them all. Rest in peace Werner. surprised and saddened to read of Werner’s passing. We both grew up in Transcona, were lifeguards for the City and shared a passion for cars. We bumped into each other many times over the years. I always enjoyed our chats updating each other on friends, family and acquaintances. Rest in peace.

I’m so sad to hear that Werner has left us. My condolences go out to his family. We were friends since elementary school from the same neighbourhood and although later we lived many miles apart we still kept in touch by phone a couple of times a year. I’ll miss those chats. Mike Broadbent
