DR. GLEN H. MCCABE

1948 - 2023

After a brief challenge with cancer, Glen Harvey McCabe passed away peacefully at home on August 14, 2023 with his beloved family at his side including his wife Sylvia Kuzyk, daughter Lara McCabe, stepdaughter Vanessa Kuzyk, sister Norma Marion and his adored kitties Button and Zipper.

Glen was born on June 18, 1948 to Norman and Lilia McCabe and was raised in Winnipeg’s tough inner city.  As a Metis boy, his early life was fraught with poverty and hardship.  However his formative years were powerfully influenced by Reverend Bob Stiven and Robertson House, part of the United Church of Canada.  As a youngster, Glen had the opportunity to go to Camp Robertson for inner city kids in Gimli where he eventually worked as a camp counsellor.  The experience instilled in him a deep and abiding desire to help and support those in need.

Driven by his humble beginnings and a passion for helping people, Glen worked hard pursuing knowledge and higher education.  Glen attended St. John’s and Sisler High Schools but it was in the university environment where he shone, excelling in his studies and winning scholarships.  He earned his BA at the University of Winnipeg and subsequently graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Master of Education and PhD in clinical psychology. Glen worked for a number of social service agencies during his early career.  After attaining his PhD, he was hired at U of M Student Affairs to provide psychological support to students until he accepted a professorship position in the U of M’s Faculty of Education in the area of counselling psychology.

Glen was proud of his Metis heritage and over time did a great deal of work with indigenous communities and organizations. His doctoral dissertation: "Finding the Healing Path - The Therapeutic Conditions of Aboriginal Traditional Healing" won an honourable mention in the 2004 Jeffrey S. Tanaka PhD Memorial Dissertation Award from the American Psychological Association - a first for a Canadian scholar.

Glen met Sylvia, the love of his life, in 1990.  They were each other’s soul mates for 33 years, enjoying many adventures and always surrounded by loving family and friends.  Glen was so proud of his daughter Lara, from his first marriage to Ionna Thiessen, who is following in her dad’s footsteps pursuing higher education.

Glen was a man of many interests and talents. Music was always an integral part of his life.  As a singer songwriter, Glen performed at numerous folk festivals over the years including the Winnipeg Folk Festival and the Whoop & Hollar Folk Festival in Portage la Prairie.  Glen loved the Winnipeg Jets, Winnipeg Blue Bombers and all things Winnipeg. He loved nature and animals and he and Sylvia enjoyed nothing more than to walk or bike together in one of Winnipeg’s many parks.  Glen was kind and thoughtful and, with his ever-present sense of humour, he will be missed and remembered by all those whose lives he touched.

Glen was predeceased by his parents Norman and Lil McCabe, sister Mary Lynn Littlejohn, aunt Betty McCabe, cousin Ronald Kachurowski and numerous other aunts and uncles.

His memory lives on with his wife Sylvia, daughter Lara, stepdaughter Vanessa, sister Norma, nephews Dennis (Karla) Daniel (Stacey, Rebecca and Paxton) cousin Donna (Michael, Jennifer, Dylan) cousin-in-law Grace Kachurowski as well as numerous other cousins and second cousins.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, September 22, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at First Unitarian Universalist Church at 603 Wellington Crescent.

Glen's family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

We spent many a night listening to Glen performing original material in our younger days and watched him develop as a musician.  At a 50s party, Glen and I danced the wildest jive of my life! We just learned of his passing today and offer our deepest condolences to Sylvia and family. Rest easy, Glen.

Dear Sylvia and Family…on behalf of the former “Board of Directors for Southlands Village Pritchard Farm” we extend our deep condolences at Glen’s passing.  When he served with us as a Board Director, we relished his professional input on so many subjects.  Always focused on doing the best for all concerned with what we had going on at the time he quickly became a “coach” in our Condo Team .   Quiet strengths, street smart, positive thinking, super talented, with a sense of humour for perspective.   We learned he had started out in life with not much more than his dream and his guitar.  Along the winding road (literally) of life he accomplished so much more at every level than most will.  Yet in he being a humble person you had to pry that information from him. Viewing the beautiful video tribute of his life and family, we can imagine the image of his being at his computer was perhaps about one our many virtual meetings we held during the pandemic.  More recently we were anticipating getting back into our breakfast meetings as these had become more about the continuing comradery sessions. So needless to say, Glen’s passing came as shock to us.  He “raised the bar” for us.  And now we have to believe he is in a happier place, probably writing some new tunes while watching over you, and his family.  Like you, we will miss him… Wishing you all the best, we are, Lance, Kerry, Barry, & John

I wish I could attend his service but I am out at West Hawk doing a service.  Many may not know that Glen did a summer ministry at Stella Mission early in the 70"s and that is how we met.  Later our paths crossed many times, I have been privileged to offer some of my gifts to Glen, Laura and Sylvia.  I am sending you my thoughts and spiritual strength as you take this next step.  Glen smile was his welcome to life gift!  As years past his passion for justice showed and always compassion.  Be gentle with each other, cherish all the memories, and thank you Glen.   Karen E. Having just learned of Glen's passing, I am so saddened.  I first met Glen and Ionna over 50 years ago through my (deceased) husband Bob.  Glen and Bob were friends through Robertson House and for many years until Bob's passing in 1983, the four of us spent many days together going camping at West Hawk Lake, travelling around Spain in a VW van Glen had rented, weekends at Lake of the Woods on our boat, going to the Paddock to hear Glen sing and many a social evening at each other's homes. Over the years, our time together was reduced to once a year visits at Jan & Reg's annual open house but we always reminisced about our earlier times together in the 60's / 70's. At this year's open house Glen shared, with the aid of Sylvia,  his diagnosis but was remarkably upbeat.  Since his meeting Sylvia in 1990, the love and devotion between the two of them was very obvious.  My deepest condolences to Sylvia and family and especially to Lara, my heartfelt sympathies.  Lara, you likely have heard very little about me but I have followed your life through your father (you were the apple of his eye) and your (deceased) mother and my heart goes out to you. Very sorry for the loss of our dear friend, Glen, also known as Northern Coyote Man.  Glen's genuine and caring manner, his contributions to the faculty, and of course, his music, all added to what's good in the world. This was the cake that Glen, and many in our department enjoyed at a social gathering to celebrate his retirement from the Faculty of Education.  As an educator, and person, he made a difference for many!

Friends are precious and they become more precious as time goes on. That’s why a friends passing leaves such a void. We’ve had the privilege of being friends with Glen and Sylvia for over 30 years and have enjoyed countless good times and lively conversations. Glens compassion for those less fortunate was heartwarming. He also staunchly supported minority rights and those struggling with mental health issues. Proud of his Métis heritage, he pursued and promoted Indigenous culture and traditions. What made Glen the happiest was a hug from the love of his life Sylvia and how proud he was of his daughter Lara and step daughter Vanessa. A close second was strumming his guitar and singing one of his original songs. His eyes lit up as he played….making it clear how passionate he was about his song writing and entertaining. He was a true Manitoba folk artist and a proud  Winnipeger.  To Sylvia, Lara, Vanessa and all who love Glen…. our wish for you is …..one day soon….when you think of Glen a smile will come to your lips before a tear comes to your eye. Glen would like that. Linda and Karl Fabian

Our family has been honored to know Glen for many years, witnessing firsthand his compassionate and kind ways.  We have wonderful memories of fun adventures at Laguna Beach  , Palm Springs , dancing on Santa Monica pier, Joshua Tree National  Park, Westhawk, Falcon , Clear Lake , watching Neutrino You Tube videos and the girls floating away in a storm at Minnedosa beach!  Fond memories of Glen’s music in concert will be carried with us as we often enjoy listening to his CDs in our cars 🎼!  We have experienced so very many deep discussions about world affairs, psychology, and his involvement in so many fundraising events have allowed us to often witness and experience Glen’s true gifts!   His love for Sylvia warmed our hearts, and our whole family will miss his smile at our family get togethers! RIP dear Glen ❤️ Sending love and sympathy to you all  Coleen and Wayne Deslauriers and family

We will always remember Glen and his gentle, authentic personality with fondness. The music and song he brought to past Open Mics and Festivals was a real privilege to listen to live, and his real stories touched many hearts. Our connection to Glen began at a house concert at John Oldham's about a decade ago, when we first met Glen and Sylvia, before our paths crossed again at our Open Mic Night in Portage in 2018. Since then, we were fortunate to have Glen host one Open Mic and play at Whoop & Hollar Folk Fest twice. After an exchange of memories with John Prentice (host of UMFM's Planet Mainstage Program), we couldn't help but dedicate this year's Festival to Glen. He will always be an exemplary Manitoban and Canadian folk artist, and a special individual known for his huge heart and caring soul. And, his personal support of the Festival will never be forgotten. A Canada goose visited the festival grounds all night last Friday, staying long into the wee hours of the morning beside the campfire jams, and we wondered if Glen's spirit might have stopped by to sing one last song. We will really miss Glen, and our thoughts and prayers of strength and healing are with Sylvia and family at this time of sorrow. Hold onto all the memories of your husband, father, and step-father dearly. Love and light... Josh, Linda, Mitchell, and the Whoop & Hollar Family.

I was saddened to hear of Glen’s passing. I thank Randy Thiessen for keeping me in the loop. Glen, Randy and I ( plus Bassman John) were a band for a short while in the 70’s. The Underside played  a few Winnipeg lounges and bars including the Cro-Magnon -  a venue behind the Burton Cummings Theatre. Glen was a very good guitarist and band leader. I have fond memories of that time. I’d like to send my love and condolences to family and friends.🙏💞

I first met Glen and Sylvia shortly before moving away from Winnipeg in the early 1990s. Despite the geographical separation I came to regard them as cherished friends and always looked forward to meeting up with them whenever I returned for a visit, usually during the summer months. I'm very regretful that I didn't make the trip this past summer. That Glen was taken from us all so suddenly was a shock and is a great sorrow. He was a great educator, a talented singer-songwriter, and above all a very fine man. I feel privileged to have known him. I'm attaching a photo I took of Glen and Sylvia in the summer of 2017 at the Campbells' Falcon Lake cottage. It speaks more than a thousand words...

Glen was a good friend who we will not forget. We will remember him for his gift of story-telling; his love of the Jets, Bombers and all things Winnipeg; his enjoyment of the perfect cup of coffee; his thoughtfulness; and the many discussions we shared on subjects both light and serious—from music trivia to homelessness. Mostly we’ll remember the friendship and laughs we shared with Glen and Sylvia over more than 30 years. This photo, taken at the bar in our Palm Springs vacation rental, reminds us of some of those good times that we’ll forever cherish. Joe and Barbara Czech

We were so sad to hear of Glen's passing.  He served on the board of Artists in Healthcare, along with Sylvia for many years.  His passion for doing good things, the depth to which he cared, his kindness, sincerity and all around goodness made him a person that you were always pleased to be around. He will be truly missed.  Our deepest sympathy to Sylvia, and all the family and friends who loved him.

News of Glen's illness and passing remains a great sadness, a loss to all who knew him. To know Glen was to love hm. Glen's thoughtfulness and sincerity were complimented by a rebellious and critical spirit, notably around issues of social justice. Glen introduced us to our first sharing circle and shared his knowledge and understanding of indigenous culture and healing. We've known Sylvia and Glen as a couple for over 30 years. Many conversations, dinners, laughs and tears. Many moments remembered at this time of sadness and gratitude for the gift of such friendship. Our thoughts are with Sylvia, Lara, Vanessa and family. I was deeply shocked and saddened to learn of Glen's passing as we go back a long, long way to the early coffee house days of the 1960's. It was wonderful to reconnect over the past decade or so and once again, have Glen's music fill the air. I feel blessed to have known him, played alongside him and been enriched by means of his wisdom, thoughtfulness, creativity and friendship. I will most certainly miss him dearly. My sincere condolences to Sylvia and all of Glen's extended family, friends and colleagues. Rest in peace my friend.

It was so sad to hear of Glen's passing. Truly a great friend. When we grew up together I called him Harvey, and to this day I still sometimes refer to him as Harvey. We were born 2 days apart at St. Joseph's Hospital (on the corner of Pritchard and Salter Avenues) and my mother told me that she was in the hospital for 4 days after I was born on June 16th. So Harvey and I have always joked about knowing each other from the day we were born (Harvey was born on June 18th). Our deepest sympathies to Sylvia and Glen's family. Many people will surely miss him, including me and Phyllis.

I was so sorry to hear of Glen's recent passing. He was a fine man and a trusted colleague. For many years, we worked side by side in the Department of Educational Administration, Foundations and Psychology in the Faculty of Education at the University of Manitoba. During that time, I knew Glen as a kind, gentle, and supportive professor and colleague who always looked for the good in people, regardless of the circumstances. His commitment to his Counselling Psychology area group and the many students who pursued graduate degrees in that area will be remembered for many years to come. My sincere condolences to Sylvia and the rest of his family. David Mandzuk
