BRUCE RANDALL MCEWAN

March 29, 1955 – August 5, 2024

With saddened hearts we announce the passing of Bruce McEwan. He will be sadly missed by his wife Cheryl; stepchildren, Tara (Cameron) and Matthew; and grandchildren, Paige and Everett. As well as brothers, Glen, Norm, Murray, Ken (Michelle), Don; sister Diane; Judy; and numerous nieces, nephews, sister and brother-in-laws, cousins, aunt, and friends.

Bruce was preceded by his parents, James and Evelyn; brothers, James Jr. and Ralph; and sister Joanne.

Bruce and Cheryl were together for 30 years and she was the love of his life. He loved his stepchildren and grandchildren dearly as if they were his very own.

He was a steamfitter by trade and worked at 17 Wing Air Force base for 35 years.

He loved music and had a natural talent, learning the bass guitar at a young age. He played in a band called Stepchild in the late 70s and early 80s. It was his brain child to build a soundproof room in the basement of our parents' house for the band to practice in. Even though it was a soundproof room it still shook the house, and the neighbour’s as well.

Another lifelong passion of Bruce's was his 1969 GTO. He and his brothers Glen and Ralph rebuilt the motor, and he loved to pamper it and proudly showed it off to everyone. It is a special memory for stepdaughter Tara when she was allowed to take it to her graduation, and it was also used to drive Tara and Cameron on their wedding day. Tara and Matt loved Bruce and he was a great stepfather. Matt enjoyed Bruce’s company, playing crib with him, and special days where Bruce would decide to take us all out for a ride in the GTO or to car shows.

He fought his battle with cancer fearlessly, with strength and dignity right up to the very end, keeping his happy disposition and sense of humour. He passed peacefully with his family around him.

Thank you to all the staff at Victoria hospital for their care and compassion. As per his wishes he will be cremated and the family will plan a celebration of life at a later date.

Godspeed Bruce,

and now you are free

to soar around the universe.

Bruce’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Sending compassion and peace to the Mcewan family. I remember Bruce with fondness as I remember him playing with my brother Daryl in bands and just for fun over the years. He was gentle and kind. I'm sure he is rocking it up in heaven, in a helluva band.

Bruce was always that guy when he came in the room, you knew it was him as he had a distinctive voice that you can't mistaken for anyone else. I worked with Bruce and Glen at DND, and those two were always up to no good (in a good way). He would always make the best chilli and would win the chilli contest every year. Condolences to the whole family.

So sorry to hear of Bruce's illness and passing. I will always remember the summer of 1977 and staying at the house on Tweed, playing a few games of cards at the table in the back with my cousins surrounded by Kenny's drawings, eating home made French fries made by Ralph and Bruce's always smiling face. Rest in peace Bruce.

I had the pleasure of working with Bruce (& Glen) @ 17 Wing. He was a great guy! Always cracking jokes about something and genuinely one of the good ones. Sadden to hear of his passing. Condolences to his family. May the support of friends and family bring you comfort and peace during this time.

I knew Bruce starting from our days at Elmwood High, either 19070 or 71. I remember when Bruce and the boys formed the band Jolly Rodger and the party/band house they rented somewhere in the north west of Winnipeg. We had many great times going to Grand Beach and playing pingpong or cards for hours on end at the McEwan home. I moved away and lost touch with him and the McEwen Clan. My deepest condolences to all of his family.

Dear Cheryl and family, Annie and I were so sorry to hear of your great loss. He loved his family so much. Bruce and I started work at 17 Wing on the very same day, so many years ago. He was the most kind and generous man. Our deepest condolences.

To Glenn and the rest of the McEwan family, I'm so distraught to hear of Bruce's passing. I had the distinct pleasure of being able to work with him for 2 years from 2011 to 2013 while he was a steamfitter at 17 WCE Winnipeg. Bruce always had a huge grin and was great for a chat. Working for 35 years on 17 Wing, few will appreciate how crucial his and Glenn's work was to making sure the base could function (as if those steam lines weren't pumping heat, no one could go to work for the whole winter).

I have the fondest memories of when we were able to make arrangements for his father's ashes to be scattered at sea, and we had a small ceremony down at the Naval reserve with Glenn, Bruce and family.

He will be sorely missed...

To my dear McEwan family: I was so very sorry to hear that Bruce was very ill, and now to hear of his passing is so very sad. I know you all loved him well to the end, and I’m sure he felt that love.

It’s funny that I do not remember going to hear Stepchild, but the 80’s are a blur (too much beer!) but I have other fond memories of Bruce. He was so kind and friendly, so easy going and had a great laugh (as do all the McEwan boys!).

I love you all hope you will lean even closer together as a family as a result of his passing. Bruce would be very pleased at that. Hugs, Shelley

So sorry for this lose to the whole McEwan clan. Bruce will be so missed!

I loved going to see Bruce's band play especially at the Pandora. He would have a huge entourage.

Years ago Bruce and a couple of the brothers fixed my car. It was quite the job they had to pull out the engine and everything. All they wanted for payment was pizza and beer, and I probably threw in a couple of haircuts.

I'm sure I have pictures somewhere. Will try to find some.

Your suffering is over, your free to fly!

Dear Di and the McEwan Clan. Thinking of you and sending hugs. I remember the sound proof room Bruce built, it was the coolest space! I am so grateful to have a last drink with Bruce and to honour his life. Thank you Di for sending our love to Bruce from his Aunt Betty and cousins in Victoria. Rest in peace Bruce.
