MARY AMELIA ROSE MCGEE

(née GORDON)

March 24, 1920 - April 17, 2022

Mary leaves two daughters to cherish her memory, Michelle Culligan and Shaun McGee (Francisco Rey); grandchildren, Shauna-Lee, Dean, Patrick, Kaylin, Sarah, Mikaela; and great grandchildren Keegan, Kaden, and Shamus.

Mary had numerous nieces, and nephews. Four nieces and their families kept Mary involved in their family celebrations until her passing (Cindy Proctor, Debbie Wicklund, Colleen Neal, and Corey MacKinnon).

Mary was born in Belmont, Manitoba and worked at many jobs; both on and off the farm. She moved to Winnipeg in the mid 40's where she worked cleaning homes and as a retail salesclerk. Tony, a career civil servant was in the RAF. He later went on to work at DVA and CPP. They met through mutual friends and married in November 1946. Tony and Mary were eager to start their family of sons (Pat, Mick and Sean). By 1957 they had their family of three daughters (Patricia, Michelle, and Shaun). Tony and Mary could not have been more proud.

They moved into a larger home in Riverview in 1963. This is where Mary found her true vocation. Mary was approached by a mental health social worker, who asked her to house one elderly client. By the end of the year Mary was caring for at least 3 ladies. This was her calling as they were not lodgers but extended family.

To people outside of the family Mary and Tony may have appeared to be an odd fit; but they were not. Both had an abiding faith and fierce loyalty to each other, family and friends.

Mary being off the farm had often said she would not have an animal in the house. It was another contradiction; it was well known if you could get the dogs bathed and through the door it had a home. Case in point: her last dog, Jade, is now 15 and survived Mary. There were many others who made it through the door - dogs, cats, duck, racoon, turtle and newts, but an adamant NO to snakes and rodents.

After Tony's stroke Mary lost her bearings. The one person who could tell her to slow down, relax and enjoy had fallen silent. At the lake, Tony's haven, and in life the rule was: we will work till noon, go to the beach, back to the cabin for dinner, cards, drinks, and a lively discussion about anything. After Tony's passing Mary slipped into the only coping skill she knew to physically work. Mary could most likely be found at the end of a broom, rake, shovel, or axe. From dawn to dusk she would work on their home, yard, or cabin.

The family would like to thank all the health care workers who helped Mary in her last months. Grace Hospital's staff, Homecare (Leena, Ann, and Jenny). St. Norbert Nursing Home (Chantelle and Normika), EMTs (Christian and Scotia). All the neighbours and friends; Terry and Emily, Don and Roselle, Kevin and Jen, Gord, and countless others for their outpouring of support.

Miss Me - But Let Me Go

When I come to the end of the road

And the sun has set for me,

I want no rites in a gloom-filled room!

Why cry for a soul set free!

Miss me a little - but not too long

And not with your head bowed low,

Remember the love that we once shared

Miss me - but let me go.

For this is a journey we all must take

And each must go alone;

It's all a part of the master's plan

A step on the road to home.

When you are lonely and sick of heart

Go to the friends we know

And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds.

Miss me - but let me go.

It’s hard to put into words how I feel about my Aunt Mary’s passing. Of course, there are the natural emotions of loss and nostalgia, but there’s something else. Mary was a unique person and I loved her. I was her niece, but I have always felt that we had a stronger connection and she loved me and my sisters almost as much as her own daughters.  Mary always enjoyed being part of our family gatherings and loved seeing our children and grandchildren over the decades as the families grew. Mary was always happiest when she was with family and friends (the 4-legged kind included).  Words cannot really describe Auntie Mary – I really miss our visits and conversations and the stories she shared about her amazing life.

Mary was the most warm and welcoming neighbour when we moved in to the house behind her nearly 17 years ago. Always busy in the yard or back lane, we were able to connect with her often. She asked about the kids and what they were up to and always made us laugh with her stories. The world has one less warm and loving heart with her loss, but she has left an impact on all those who knew her. We and the other neighbours always new spring was truly here when we could hear Mary chipping away at the ice in the backlane with an ax. Wherever she is, I imagine she's got that twinkle in her eye and a broom, an ax and a shovel at the ready, in case there's work to do. Thinking of you all.

I am so sorry for the loss of my dear friend Mary. She was my role model- blazing the trail with her indomitable spirit. She was a force-working in her backyard, going to the cottage and living independently well into her nineties. She had "muscles like Popeye". I will miss dropping in for our chats in her cozy kitchen. I am not far behind you Mary! Sincere condolences to Mary's family who were tireless in their care for her. Love, Ruth Bridle

Mary was such a lovely person and a good friend to my parents Charlie and Trudy Sabo.  Such a dog lover - having obtained one of our dashound puppies and later a Doberman - and such a great dog mom.   My deepest sympathy to your families

Corey’s Aunt died at 102 years of age. We visited her often at her house in Riverview. She grew up in Belmont on a farm and was with it and active until she fell. She reminded me so much of the generation we have lost, self-reliant, determined, loyal to those she loved, and with an encyclopedic knowledge of all she had experienced and lived through. And that, that was considerable. Just wanted to share my favourite line of hers: “John, in my lifetime I have gone from the barn to the Palace” wherein she refers to the early morning milking of the cows at the Belmont Farm and her long term residence in her mansion on Balfour in Riverview. Mary McGee knew my Father as she worked at the Ninette Sanatorium back in the day where my Dad consulted. She also admired my Mom from afar at The Canoe Club and is my last link with anyone who knew my parents and who lived in and through the same era as our parents. Such a loss, I have no words for. Just the utmost admiration and gratefulness in having the privilege of knowing her. John MacKinnon

My names Sandra and my dog's name is Rosie. When we would walk pat Mary's house we would pop in and say hello to Mary, and she would be happy to pat Rosie, and get her "dog fix" She was a very dear woman. I can see she was the centre of a very loving family.  R.I.P. dear Mary.

Mary was an icon and an inspiration. I am so glad I met her and got to spend many afternoons visiting her. She will live on through our memories. Lots of love to the family and all her friends. As she would say after a quick visit; “well, I’m gonna love ya and leave ya.” ❤

Mary was a lovely lady and a credit to her generation.  I will always remember her cheerful smile and her connection to my Dad’s childhood.
