LUCY AMANDA
MARIE MCGIBNEY

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Lucy Amanda Marie McGibney on September 28th, 2021.

Lucy was born on September 7th, 2021 at 10:31am at Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, with a birth weight of 3.2 pounds. Lucy arrived just two minutes after her twin sister Charlotte, delighting parents Leigh-Ann and Tyler.

Lucy was born with Congenital Heart Disease, faced multiple surgeries, and was beyond brave in her journey. After spending time with her family at HSC NICU and gaining strength, Lucy and her Dad travelled to Stollery Children’s Hospital NICU in Edmonton – fittingly, for such precious cargo, in a private jet. On September 27th, Lucy fought through surgery, before spending some time with her Daddy until the next day, when she knew it was time to go. She passed in her Daddy’s loving arms.

Lucy will be beyond missed by her Dad, Mom, twin sister Charlotte, fur sisters Jenny and Miss Elizabeth, Grandpa Shawn, Grandma Sharon, Baba Corrie, Pops Mo, Grandad Gary, Grandmugay Ligaya, Uncle and Lucy's Godfather Riley (Sabrina), Uncle Kody (Lauren), Aunty Amanda (Matt), Cousins and Godmothers Olivia and Kennedy, and many, many great aunts, uncles, cousins, great-grandparents, and friends. Lucy was named in honor of her Great-Grandmother Lucille, who helped guide the twins to their parents, and we know she is holding Lucy now as she continues on her journey.

In such a short span of time, Lucy had so many amazing accomplishments. She brought so much joy and light to her parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins, and friends. While she fiercely fought for her life, Lucy contributed to research that will allow babies like her to have more time with their families. With her warrior-like spirit and her resilience in the face of medical challenges, Lucy inspired the world around her and reminded us of the preciousness of life. Family, friends, and strangers united in their love and hope for such a sweet girl, and are united now in sympathy for her family. Lucy’s incredible legacy is one of joy, beauty, and love.

Lucy’s family and friends are so grateful for her. They will fondly remember the anticipation and excitement they felt as they awaited Lucy and Charlotte’s arrival, the beautiful joy of the girls’ delivery, and her time here. Lucy’s parents will forever be grateful for the time they had with their little girl. Leigh-Ann will cherish the time she spent growing and carrying Lucy + Charlotte, and keep the memory of holding her twins for an hour and forty minutes as the best moment in her whole life. Tyler will remember the tender moments he and Lucy shared together as they awaited her surgeries in Edmonton. Both her parents will always appreciate those precious moments when the whole family was able to be together. We are so grateful to Lucy for sharing her light with us.

Lucy’s family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the healthcare team who worked so hard to give them 21 glorious days with their beautiful baby girl. From the surgeons, doctors, nurses, and healthcare aides, to the people responsible for getting Lucy to Edmonton safely, countless people worked tirelessly and were rooting for this brave girl. A special thank you goes out to LA’s Fetal Assessment Team (Nurse Lucy, Kyla and Dr. B), Dr. Corbett, and Lucy’s NICU nurses at both St.B, HSC and Stollery Children’s Hospital, who truly cared for Lucy as a part of their family, and helped guide the new parents through their first tumultuous weeks. Your kindness and compassion will never be forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to Variety Children’s Heart Center in Lucy McGibney’s honor.

We will always love you, our Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.

Forever and always, our baby you’ll be.
