JON MICHAEL MCGUIRE, J.D.
November 20, 1944 – July 26, 2026
It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Jon Michael McGuire, J.D. of Winnipeg, on July 26, 2026.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Irene, his sisters Roberta, Marilee (Larry) and Kate (Joe), his children Sean, Patrick (Linds & Ali), Meghan (Darren), Tamatha and Rob (Pat), his grandchildren Rohan, Cormac, Freya, Marlowe, Daine and Chris (Lindsay) and great-grandchildren Sawyer, Rory and Piper.
Jon was born in 1944 in Edmonton and as a child, he and his parents moved to Winnipeg. In the winter of 1947 his family froze in a little house on Valour Road before moving to Warsaw Ave. Jon went to school at St. Ignatius, St. Paul’s High School and Kelvin High School. He flunked physics in grade 12 and did not finish high school. Jon worked various jobs including summers on the DEW Line as a kitchen helper and warehouse worker. He moved on to selling men’s clothing at Fredrick’s and then managing the young men’s shop at Holt-Renfrew. In 1967 he started in a mature student program which led him to enrol at the University of Winnipeg. While high school had been a challenging experience for Jon, university was a positive eye-opener and Jon thrived with new friends, new ideas, debate, and trust. He was on the Dean’s Honour’s List each year at the U of W. After the second year he applied to law school, wrote the U.S. LSAT and was accepted.
In Jon’s articling year, he served under a local lawyer and worked for the Securities Commission where he stayed until 1976. In 1972 Jon received his Juris Doctor, an achievement which brought him great pride. He then went to the Manitoba Telephone System. He served as Chairman of the Legal Sub-Committee for Canadian Telecommunications Association as well as corporate secretary for MTX Telecom Services Inc.
Over the next 23 years he built a house, raised three wonderful children and got to travel all over the world. Jon married Irene in 1996 and they have been constant companions to each other since then. Jon welcomed two adult children through his union with Irene and he loved his biological and step-children without distinction. Jon was blessed with six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. It brought him great joy to go fishing, cook meals or watch his family open Christmas presents every year.
Jon was very active within the Catholic church and some of his activities included serving as communion distributor for the Papal Mass in 1984 as well as serving in many roles within the Knights of Columbus. He was very proud of his volunteering time at DASCH where he served as corporate secretary and board member. He also served as president of the Beresford Lake Cottagers’ Association.
Jon enjoyed life to the fullest and was a man of many hobbies. During his 21 years of retirement at Beresford Lake, Jon enjoyed felling trees, riding his ATV, planting flowers and spending time outdoors with his grandchildren. Jon was an early riser who enjoyed nature photography and the beauty of a sunrise. He also loved fishing and fried pickerel cheeks were a favourite delicacy. He was a connoisseur of fine wines and a collector of flower pots from all local gardening stores. A voracious reader, Jon read widely with a special appreciation for mysteries and Nordic Noir. He loved hunting for treasures at used book sales and swapping books with family members.
We would like to thank the doctors and nurses at St Boniface ER department and the Acute Cardiac Care Unit for the wonderful care they provided to Jon.
Cremation has taken place and a private celebration of life will be held at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
