CORAL J. MCKENDRICK

March 4, 1950 – January 1, 2024

Coral McKendrick of Winnipeg passed away at St. Boniface Hospital on January 1, 2024, after an extended period of ill health. Born on March 4, 1950, Coral was the daughter of the late James McKendrick and Mildred (Grantham) McKendrick.

Coral is survived by her nephew, Darren McLeod, and many close friends; several of these friends go back decades through her many career changes and volunteer roles. Coral was pre-deceased by her older sister Donna McKendrick in 2020.

Coral was a gifted writer. She wrote for the Winnipeg Tribune and freelanced for other publications over several years after graduating from the University of Manitoba. In later years before her health declined, she was active in Winnipeg’s Fringe Festival and co-founded and contributed to the Jenny Revue and awards. She was involved in the Winnipeg Folk Festival organizing the Green Room and was a playwright and producer of several theatre productions with the Manitoba Theatre Workshop, she was also a freelance theater, music, and restaurant critic.

Coral loved her cats and appreciated and enjoyed the close friendships she enjoyed over the many years. She was revered for her storytelling skills and for celebrating life by joining or hosting a good party.

Respecting Coral’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Instead of flowers donations can be made to the donation of your choice.

A celebration of Coral’s life will be held at a later date.

Shock to hear about Coral. Many decades ago, I was introduced to her and her Elmwood cadre. An amazing group of people, of which Coral was the glue binding them all. She had such a great personality, you couldn't help but want to be around her.  Many a late night spent on McCalman.   I'm grateful that a few years ago I was able to catch up with Coral's ventures. Such an amazing lady.  May you meet your cats on the Rainbow bridge. Bill Cordingley (Cord)

One evening at Susan and Gillies place, the joint jumping, she walked into the kitchen and demanded someone play a Sam Cook tune. Nobody said anything, and she said - forget country it’s three chords and Sam’s truth. And we broke out a version of If You Ever Change Your Mind. She was a force, a terrific energy and funny. RIP Coral.

Coral, I enjoyed so much working with you when you were editor of The Jenny Revue and I was a Winnipeg Fringe reviewer. I remember those many nights spent in discussion and planning at the King's Head Pub. Yes, we fell out of touch after my own health went downhill and my Fringe activities were curtailed. But I may be catching up to you and we can do it all over again in spirit. Love, Robin xxxooo
